Super Tuesday 5/3/11: Capoch captures the chips, cashing for $49,235
The first Super Tuesday of May featured a field of 229 players creating a prize pool of $229,000 distributed among the final 27 players. The winner is expected to take down an impressive $49,235.
Three members of Team PokerStars participated in today's Super Tuesday, with Team Canada Pro Pat Pezzin (below) the highest placed finisher, but earning $0 for his 29th place finish. Team Brazil Gualter Salles and Team PokerStars Online player Kwangsoo "PiS.ToTo" Lee finished in the upper third of participants.
When play was 11-handed, Sphinx87 suffered a bad beat at the hands of Rybin Alexey when their pocket kings ran into 9♦8♦ to have less than half a big blind. Sphinx87 would double up a couple of times, getting the last laugh when it was Rybin Alexey who finished in 10th place. The blinds were 1,200/2,400 with an ante of 150 when Rybin Alexey opened from the button with a min-raise to 4,800 with A♦T♠. From the big blind, inwooke 3-bet to 14,296 with A♠K♥, followed by a 4-bet shove from Rybin Alexey for 105,600 total as inwooke snap-called. The board ran out K♣ 8♥ J♠ 8♦ 4♥ sending Rybin Alexey packing in 10th place for $4,007.50, setting up our final table.
Here's how the final table looked at the start of play, with the first hand played at 1,400/2,800 with an ante of 350:
Seat 1: inwooke (348,697 in chips)
Seat 2: capoch (99,193 in chips)
Seat 3: JasonX85 (69,704 in chips)
Seat 4: zwacke (87,446 in chips)
Seat 5: maximilian74 (191,484 in chips)
Seat 6: VARICO (129,618 in chips)
Seat 7: gmcrafter (138,074 in chips)
Seat 8: Sphinx87 (9,264 in chips)
Seat 9: tokyo09 (71,520 in chips)
Sphinx87 flushed away
It wasn't a surprise that the first player eliminated at the final table was the extremely short-stacked Sphinx87, earning $4,580 in 9th place. Action opened with a min-raise to 5,600 by capoch followed by a call from zwacke. From the big blind, Sphinx87 moved in for 8,914 chips as capoch re-raised to 22,500 to isolate. After zwacke got out of the way, capoch was well out in front with K♠J♠ against Sphinx87's T♥3♥. The board ran out 4♠ 6♠ 7♦ J♦ 8♠, giving capoch an unnecessary flush as Sphinx87's hopes went down the drain.
Capoch capitalizes again
Nearly an hour later, capoch would eliminate the next player as JasonX85 earned $6,870 for his 8th place finish. The blinds were now at 1,800/3,600 with an ante of 450 as capoch min-raised on the button to 7,200 with K♠K♥. Jasonx85 shipped it for 89,127 from the small blind holding A♥7♣ as capoch instantly called. Five cards later, there were seven players seated at the table when the board ran out 8♣ 4♦ J♥ 6♣ 8♦ as the cowboys held up.
Maximilian74 maxed out in seventh
The methodical pace at the final table continued with the next elimination taking place with the blinds up to 2,800/5,600 with an ante of 700. Maximilian74 shoved from UTG with A♥6♥, Action folded around to zwacke in the big blind, waking up with K♦K♥ to call and put Maximilan74's tournament life at stake. The Q♦4♦2♦ flop reduced the Greek player's outs, but hope renewed when the 5♥ appeared on the turn. The revival was short-lived as the 9♠ on the river sent Maximilian74 to the virtual rail, earning $9,160.
Gmcrafter collapses in sixth
The final table developed into a two-player race as inwooke's chip lead disappeared at the hands of capoch and Tokyo09, leaving inwooke as one of the short stacks. The next player to fall however was gmcrafter, involved in three straight all-in confrontations. The first hand featured gmcrafter doubling up Alvaro "VARICO" Ballesteros T♥T♣ defeating A♦4♥, then getting a double up of their own when their 9♣5♠ outflopped the K♣6♥ hand of tokyo09. On the next hand, with blinds of 3,200/6,400 with an ante of 800, gmcrafter tried once again to double up, shoving for 64,414 from the button with J♦7♦, followed by a re-raise from tokyo09 in the small blind with A♣2♠. The board ran out 5♣ T♠ 2♥ 6♦ 3♥ to give the Chilean player a prize of $11,450 for coming in 6th place as tokyo09 added to their chip lead.
zwacke wacked in fifth
Two months ago, zwacke took down the first Super Tuesday in March, and was hoping to do the same tonight. However, tokyo09 crushed the German's dreams just four spots away from the Super Tuesday double, left to collect $13,740 in 5th place. From the button, zwacke shoved for 84,766 with A♣9♥, only to see tokyo09 wake up with another big hand from the big blind, A♥Q♣. The Q♦5♣3♠ flop left zwacke drawing very slim, as the T♠T♦ turn and river concluded the action to leave just four players remaining.
VARICO vanquished in fourth
Alvaro "VARICO" Ballesteros was the next to feel the power of tokyo09, falling in fourth place to pick up a payday of $20,037.50. With the blinds now 3,600/7,200 with an ante of 900, VARICO shoved from the small blind for 69,314 with Q♣7♥ with tokyo09 having another easy call, this time with A♠J♦ in the big blind. The 9♠6♠3♠ flop gave the chip leader the nut flush draw, killing some of VARICO's outs. The 6♣ on the turn changed nothing, but VARICO may have been happy to see a queen hit the river. Problem was it was the Q♠, completing the flush for tokyo09 as three players remained.
Capoch finds a double, then busts inwooke in third
Tokyo09 started three-handed play with well over half the chips, as inwooke and capoch were fighting it out for second place. When this hand played out, it appeared a foregone conclusion we'd be heads-up shortly, but the river has a funny way of changing things in a hurry:
Just a few hands later, inwooke found 7♥6♥ in the small blind and shoved for 51,819 total as capoch felt Q♠J♥ a worthy call. The board ran out 3♥ 4♦ K♣ 2♣ Q♥, as inwooke was crushed in 3rd place, left to wonder what heads-up would have been like if that nine had not appeared on the river.
Deal denied, capoch starts comeback
Heads-up play started with tokyo09 having a healthy lead over capoch: 720,503 to 424,497. There were attempts at making a deal between the duo, with tokyo09 offering $39,000 to end the match, which capoch denied. The first big hand for capoch gave the player a crucial double-up to get close to even. The blinds were now at 4,000/8,000 with an ante of 1,000 as capoch min-raised from the small blind with A♥7♥. In the big blind, tokyo09 re-raised to 40,000 with A♦J♥ as capoch 4-bet shoved for 236,597 total as tokyo09 called. The flop of Q♥8♣ 7♦ gave capoch the advantage, held when the turn and river bricked out 5♥T♠ as play continued.
Capoch hits another flop, doubles once again
With no end in sight, tokyo09 once again took a commanding lead in the heads-up match, but capoch's mind remained on the grind to take the chip lead after another come from behind victory. Action was now at 4,500/9,000 with an ante of 1,125 as capoch raised to 18,000 with A♦T♠. tokyo09 re-raised to 45,000 with A♣J♣ as capoch called. The flop was A♠T♥9♠ as tokyo09 led out for 54,000 as capoch called with their flopped two pair. The turn brought the 5♦ as tokyo09 led out again with a bet of 150,000. That bet gave capoch the initiative to shove for 310,819 as tokyo09 called. The 6♥ on the river gave capoch the chip lead for the first time in heads-up play, holding an over 2-1 chip lead as momentum shifted.
Tokyo09 battles back to take lead
Having lost the chip lead, tokyo09 didn't give up the fight, as noted in this hand that failed to reach showdown:
Several hands later, tokyo09 picked off a bluff on the river in this hand to retake the lead:
Capoch flips final hand to finish foe
Heads-up play lasted well over an hour, but the match had to come to an end at some point and it was capoch that won the final hand. The blinds had leaped to 8,000/16,000 with an ante of 2,000 as tokyo09 started the action with a raise to 32,000 from the small blind with A♠T♠. Capoch 3-bet to 78,000 with 3♣3♥, then tokyo09 clicked it back, making it 124,000. Capoch had enough and shoved for 644,526 total as tokyo09 called all-in for their tournament life. The J♠7♥6♠ flop gave tokyo09 the nut flush draw along with their two overcards for a total of 15 outs. The 5♦ on the turn changed nothing, and the K♥ on the river meant capoch was the Super Tuesday winner in a super heads-up battle, earning $49,235 for the win as tokyo09 settled for the runner-up award of $35,495.
