Super Tuesday: lermonad quenches thirst for victory

Super Tuesday logo.pngAlthough all eyes in the poker world are currently transfixed on the WSOP Main Event (where more than a dozen members of Team PokerStars Pro are headed into Day 3), 226 players with a thousand bucks to spare were able to look away for a few hours and embark on a pursuit of their own title-- Super Tuesday Champion. Sure, this one wasn't exactly awarding an $8.7 million first-place prize, but we don't know too many folks who'd turn their nose up at mid-five figures for only a few hours' work. 27 places were paid out this week, with first place set to earn $48,590. The lone member of Team PokerStars Pro in the running was Alexis "J0hnny_Dr@m@" Zervos, who bowed out in 150th place.

After seven and a half hours of play, faithless was eliminated on the final table bubble. Most of his chips landed in glhf99's stack after he ran pocket sixes into pocket queens in a preflop all-in. The rest went to 810ofclubs a few hands later when faithless' K♦5♦ could not hold up against 4♦6♥. A six hit the turn on the T♠Q♦2♣6♠7♥ board, sending the Costa Rican to the rail and leaving us with the final nine.

Seat 1: lermonad (311,444 in chips)
Seat 2: nandor82 (146,840 in chips)
Seat 3: zlatananana (72,823 in chips)
Seat 4: socioanonimo (96,192 in chips)
Seat 5: 810ofclubs (153,408 in chips)
Seat 6: glhf99 (137,642 in chips)
Seat 7: VANGI91 (89,987 in chips)
Seat 8: chapmoney (68,522 in chips)
Seat 9: claypole (53,142 in chips)

Socioanonimo arrived at the final table fifth in chips, but was the first to exit. Following a button raise to 7,359 from nandor82, socioanonimo three-bet shoved for 86,192 from the big blind and nandor82 made the call with A♣8♥. Socioanonimo had a slight edge preflop with pocket sixes and an even greater one on the J♦T♠5♣ flop, but nandor82 hit running straight cards, the 9♣ and the Q♦ hitting the turn and river to end socioanonimo's run in ninth place.

Claypole was beginning to grow short-stacked when he managed to pick off a bluff. Claypole opened A♦J♠ from UTG+1 and glhf99 tried to move him off the hand with a shove from the big blind for 115,392 with only 4♠7♥. Claypole made the call, flopping a jack, turning aces up, and rivering a boat to double to 171,334, good for third in chips. Glhf99 was able to quickly recover when minutes later, zlatananana decided to put his tournament life at risk while glhf99 was lying in wait with pocket aces. Glhf99 opened for 7,200 from UTG, lermonad reraisedt to 18,975 and zlatananana four-bet shoved for 54,782 from the small blind holding A♠Q♣. Glhf99 moved all-in behind him and lermonad surrendered. The aces held and zlatananana departed in eighth, earning $6,780 for his troubles.

Claypole added even more to his stack when he won a key coinflip to eliminate chapmoney in seventh. Chapmoney open-shoved for his last 66,247 with pocket fives and claypole made the call with A♠K♥. Although chapmoney hit top set on the 5♥3♥2♥ flop, claypole made a king-high flush on the turn when the 4♥ fell. Chapmoney's last hope was the board pairing on the river, but instead the Q♣ fell, sending him to the rail with an extra $9,040 in his account.

With this five opponents all sporting six-figure stacks, VANGl91 was sitting with 46,000 (11.5 big blinds). The action folded around to the small blind and glhf99 shoved for just under 140,000. VANGl91 looked him up with pocket fives from the big blind and hit a boffo flop-- K♠K♥5♠-- to double his stack to 95,000. With VANGl91 a contender again, 810ofclubs decided to make a move, opening for 8,375 from second position. Lermonad three-bet to 22,245 from the big blind and 810ofclubs responded with a shove for 167,733. Lermonad quickly called, turning up A♠K♠ to 810ofclubs' 5♠6♠. Although 810ofclubs caught a pair of sixes on the turn, a king hit the river to give lermonad the 340k pot and the dominant chip lead. For sixth place, 810ofclubs earned $11,300.

Pocket aces spelled the demise of a second final table player when claypole picked up the bullets in the small blind. Nandor82 had opened for 12,879 from UTG and claypole bumped it up to 44,800. Nandor82 shoved for 185,185 and claypole snap-called. Nandor82's pocket queens went up in smoke on the jack-high board and he departed in fifth place, the $13,560 lining his pockets going a long way to soothe the pain.

VANGl91 had tried several times to get his opponents to agree to look at deal numbers, but always to no avail. Short-stacked with four to go, he open-shoved for 87,204 (13.5 BB) with pocket eights and claypole moved all-in behind him on the button. Both blinds folded and claypole turned up pocket queens, the ladies holding up to send VANGl91 home in fourth place for $19,775. Following his elimination, deal discussions broke out, claypole, lermonad, and glhf99 agreeing to a three-way ICM chop with an additional $3,000 going to the winner.

Glhf99 departed in third place, four-bet shoving for 325,514 from the button with A♦8♠ after lermonad reraised from the big blind. Unfortunately for glhf99, it was no light three-bet, larmonad walking up with pocket kings. The board ran out 4♥2♣3♠J♣8♦ to end glhf99's his run and send us to heads-up play.

Lermonad held a nearly 2 to 1 chip lead over claypole as heads-up play commenced:

Seat 1: lermonad (746,939 in chips)
Seat 9: claypole (383,061 in chips)

It was all over on the fifth hand, the money going in on the flop:

With an eight-high straight, lermonad sealed up the Super Tuesday victory and $40,776. No stranger to a big buy-in final table, lermonad bagged more than $100,000 in earnings in this year's SCOOP, finishing in third place in Event #2-M ($215 NLHE) and seventh in the $1,575 heads-up event. For runner-up claypole, the $37,255 he picked up tonight is his largest-ever online MTT score.
