mendezoo captures six-figure payday, tops massive 10/23/12 Super Tuesday

Super Tuesday logo.pngThe Super Tuesday, PokerStars' weekly $1,050 no-limit hold'em tournament, features three hours of late registration. So we try not to get too excited around here about field sizes and prize pools until after that three-hour period has elapsed. Then we take a looksee.

However, eyebrows were raised a little early this week when the total number of entrants rushed past 400, then eclipsed the 500-player mark during the third hour of registration. That's because we know 500 players in the Super Tuesday isn't something that happens all that often.

In fact, it's only happened once before.

Last week they came close, with 494 players and a nifty $93,860 first prize for winner RcknTheSbrbs. And there have been a few other instances when they nearly got there. But only one time had the total tripped up over 500, when a whopping 540 showed up back in March of this year. That week's winner -- calvin7v -- took away more than $102K for first.

23oct12-supertuesday-540entrants.jpgThe total kept growing. Finally they reached the three-hour break and registration closed. And the final number was... 540! A record-tying field!

That meant a huge prize pool of $540,000 (crushing the $300K guarantee). The top 63 finishers would split the winnings, with $102,600 awaiting the winner barring any final table deals.

From 540 to 63

It would take another hour and 20 minutes after late registration closed for the field to be cut down to 100 players, with jnel9, mendezoo, and Maathematixx leading the way. As it would happen, two of those three would be at the top of the leaderboard at tourney's end as well.

A couple of Team PokerStars Pros were still in the hunt, too -- Jose "nachobarbero" Barbero and Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth -- both hovering just outside the top 30.

About an hour after that they were down to 65 players, with Laurynas "LaurisL91" Levinskas, NegroVente1, and mendezoo the only players over 100,000 and Barbero having cracked the top ten.

Soon a short-stacked PAX176 was all in before the flop against two opponents with K♥Q♦, and when the board brought four spades and a flush for SUNDAYKING, PAX176 was out in 65th.

Hand-for-hand play began, and very soon C. Darwin2 was all in following a J♣K♥6♥ flop against Dylan "ImaLucSac" Lynde. C. Darwin2 held K♦J♦ for two pair while Lynde had K♣Q♦. The turn then brought the Q♠ to improve Lynde to a better two pair, and when a trey fell on the river C. Darwin2 was the last player out before the cash in 64th.

From 63 to 9

They pushed through the six-hour mark as the field continued to shrink. Among the eliminated were Thayer "THAY3R" Rasmussen (63rd, $2,376), Richard "nutsinho" Lyndaker (60th, $2,376), Justas "selinantis" Semaška (56th, $2,376), Randal "RandALLin" Flowers (50th, $2,538), Patrick "pmahoney22" Mahoney (42nd, $2,700), and J.C. "PrtyPsux" Alvarado (32nd, $2,970).

By the time they'd gotten down to 27 players, franc1978685 had moved into the top spot with Team Pro Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth just behind in second.

Meanwhile Ainsworth's teammate Jose "nachobarbero" Barbero had slipped to short-stacked status, down to less than 30,000 at a time when the average stack was more than three times that.

But Barbero would battle back, and by the time they reached the eight-hour break and were down to just 11 players, both he and Ainsworth were still with chips, albeit both with below-average stacks and well behind leaders mendezoo, plokker292, and OMGitshunt. By then the eliminated included Anton "ekziter" Astapov (24th, $3,240), Dylan "ImaLucSac" Lynde (14th, $5,400), and Dani "supernova9" Stern (13th, $5,400).

They returned from the break, and soon it looked like fahim69 was on the verge of elimination after going all in versus leader mendezoo. fahim69 had K♥K♣ and mendezoo 4♠4♥, and when a four flopped fahim69 appeared doomed. But a king arrived on the river to save fahim69, and the final 11 fought onward.

It wasn't long after that hand that franc1978685 would be all in before the flop with A♠8♠ against the K♦J♦ of Milana Jones. Both a jack and an eight flopped, and when the turn and river brought no further improvement for franc1978685, they were down to 10.

Just a moment later it was Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth with his tourney life on the line, having committed his short stack with A♦J♣ and run into mendezoo's A♠K♦. The board rolled out 6♠7♦Q♥5♠[10s], and Ainsworth was out in 10th, having like franc1978685 earned $6,480.

The final nine was set.

Barbero bounced in 9th

With the blinds at 2,800/5,600 to start the final table, only fahim69 was severely short chip-wise, although fahim69 would soon add a few chips and then enjoy a double up to move quickly out of the danger zone.

Over the next half-hour mendezoo would maintain the advantage while Barbero slipped back to ninth of nine. They played on for almost a half-hour more and were approaching the nine-hour break when trickyone14 opened with a minimum raise to 16,000 from middle position, then Barbero reraised all in for 117,559 from one seat over. It folded back around and trickone14 called.

trickyone14: T♣T♦
nachobarbero: K♠Q♥

The board brought five low cards, coming 6♦7♣3♦7♦7♠, and Barbero was out in ninth.

Milana Jones joins the rail in 8th

They took the nine-hour break, and not long after trickyone14 was raising again from middle position, this time for 18,000. Milana Jones called the raise from the button, then plokker292 reraised to 56,000 from the small blind. The big blind and trickyone14 both folded, but Milana Jones responded with an all-in shove for 140,713 total and plokker292 called.

Milana Jones showed Q♣Q♠, but had run into plokker292's K♥K♠. The board came J♣7♠2♥A♥8♠, and Milana Jones was gone in eighth.

hypnotic242 knocked out in 7th

The remaining seven pushed on for another 20 minutes during which time fahim69 continued to chip up, eventually passing mendezoo to occupy the top spot on the leaderboard.

The blinds were up to 4,500/9,000 when hypnotic242 open-pushed all in for 90,067 from early position, then Maathematixx came back with a nearly-all in reraise for more than 240,000 from the button, forcing out the blinds. hypnotic45 showed 5♥5♣ and Maathematixx A♣Q♠.

The flop came 9♠A♦J♥, pairing Maathematixx. The turn was the [10h] and river the K♦, leaving Maathematix with a straight and sending hypnotic242 railward in seventh.

OMGitshunt captured in 6th

A short while later Maathematixx opened with a 2x raise to 20,000 from under the gun, then OMGitshunt reraised all in for 116,076 from the cutoff seat. It folded back to Maathematixx who quickly called, showing Q♣Q♦ to OMGitshunt's 5♠5♦.

The community cards came K♠J♠K♣3♥J♦, and OMGitshunt's run ended in sixth.

trickyone14 tripped up in 5th

Soon they made the 10-hour mark, with plokker292 now in front with almost 780,000, trickyone14 next with about 705,000, mendezoo third with just over 550,000, Maathematixx fourth with a little less than 426,000, and fahim69 last with almost 241,000.

After they returned from the break, mendezoo won a huge 1.1 million-plus chip pot versus trickyone14 to surge in front.

In that one, the board read K♣[10d]9♣J♥ when trickyone14 raised all in with A♦J♦ and got a quick call from mendezoo who held Q♥Q♠ for a straight. The river was an ace, and mendezoo claimed the top spot while trickyone14 tumbled to fifth.

Just a few hands later fahim69 min-raised to 28,000 from UTG, then trickyone14 reraised all in for 137,039 from the small blind. plokker292 folded the big blind and fahim69 snap-called, showing A♦K♣ to trickyone14's K♥J♠. The board ran out A♥7♠9♠2♦2♣, and trickyone14 was done. They were down to four.

plokker292 put away in 4th

They played on, with mendezoo pushing up close to 1.4 million while plokker292 fell back to less than 140,000. The blinds pushed up to 9,000/18,000, and when mendezoo open-shoved all in from the button, plokker292 called for 126,996 from the blinds. plokker292 had the advantage with A♦T♠ versus mendezoo's A♥8♠.

But the board came 4♦8♥K♥8♣K♣ to give mendezoo a full house and send plokker292 out in fourth.

Aces fail fahim69, out in 3rd

At that point the tourney was briefly paused for some possible chop talk, but Maathematixx immediately said "no deal thankyou" and play continued with mendezoo sitting with about 1.55 million, Maathematixx with about 966,000, and fahim69 just under 180,000.

Soon the short stack fahim69 was open-pushing from the button for 143,262, then Maathematixx reraised all in from the small blind and mendezoo folded. Maathematixx showed 6♥6♠, but fahim69 had been dealt A♥A♦. The flop came 4♥J♥J♦ and turn K♣, and fahim69 appeared in good shape to double.

But the river brought the 6♣ -- a two-outer for Maathematixx, and a third-place finish for fahim69.

mendezoo subtracts from Maathematixx's stack

Heads-up play began with mendezoo enjoying about a 2-to-1 lead over Maathematixx with 1,766,792 to the latter's 933,208. The pair played a few hands, then paused the tourney again to talk about possibly lessening the divide between first- and second-place prize money.

"Chip-chop" numbers were requested and produced, but when Maathematixx asked for about $5K more mendezoo said no thanks and play resumed.

mendezoo immediately began chipping away at Maathematixx, and by the 11-hour break had moved up over 2.3 million while Maathematixx fell to just under 400,000.

Soon after they started back, Maathematixx scored a double-up with 8♣8♦ versus mendezoo's K♣T♣. A few hands later Maathematixx opened for the minimum with a raise to 40,000 from the button, then mendezoo reraised to 92,750. Maathematixx pushed back with an all-in shove for 704,120 total, and mendezoo called.

mendezoo: Q♦Q♥
Maathematixx: 7♣7♦

A couple of pocket pairs, and when the board rolled out 9♦5♥8♣K♥4♥, it was all over! mendezoo had won!
