Super Tuesday 1/10/12: Show the money to fold_em_sho7
The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure didn't put a damper on tonight's Super Tuesday as 366 players registered. The $366,000 prize pool was split up amongst the final 45 players with the winner expecting to earn over $70,000. After an attempt at a five-handed deal failed, fold_em_sho7 maintained their chip lead to the end, winning outright.
Four members of Team PokerStars participated, but all fell short of the money. Team Mexico Pro Angel Guillen (below) was the highest finisher in 82nd place. Team Ireland Pro Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth, Team Greece Challenger George 'gkap13' Kapalas and Team PokerStars Pro Chad Brown were the other participants.
Unlike other Super Tuesday final tables, the hand-for-hand play at the final table bubble carried on for over a level as there wasn't a player critically short-stacked. The blinds were at 1,800/3,600 with an ante of 450 as action folded around to Andras "probirs" Nemeth min-raised from the cut-off with A♣T♥. A three-bet from fold_em_sho7 on the button to 15,680, holding Q♦Q♥ removed anyone else who hadn't committed chips. Probirs then moved all-in for their last 79,890 chips as fold_em_sho7 quickly called. The board runs out 8♥5♣3♠2♥ 8♣, leaving Nemeth without chips, out in 10th place for $5,490 to set up the final table.
Here's the chip counts when final table play starts:
Seat 1: Shhh00kem (153,874 in chips)
Seat 2: MarkusG91 (124,864 in chips)
Seat 3: fold_em_sho7 (394,087 in chips)
Seat 4: menin77 (239,638 in chips)
Seat 5: rua33 (258,272 in chips)
Seat 6: jeff710 (153,755 in chips)
Seat 7: Sheeeeep (173,114 in chips)
Seat 8: Schappuscha (180,078 in chips)
Seat 9: donvin21 (152,318 in chips)
Let's update the chip counts since there wasn't an elimination for over half an hour:
Seat 1: Shhh00kem (225,053 in chips)
Seat 2: MarkusG91 (121,065 in chips)
Seat 3: fold_em_sho7 (403,801 in chips)
Seat 4: menin77 (197,167 in chips)
Seat 5: rua33 (401,169 in chips)
Seat 6: jeff710 (70,905 in chips)
Seat 7: Sheeeeep (170,592 in chips)
Seat 8: Schappuscha (81,730 in chips)
Seat 9: donvin21 (158,518 in chips)
Fold_em_sho7 still held the chip lead, but barely as rua33 closed the gap. Needing an infusion of chips, Sheeeeep's stack would do nicely for the player in seat 3. The blinds were now 2,400/4,800 with a running ante of 600 as fold_em_sho7 opened with a min-raise to 9,600. Sheeeeep popped it up to 24,100 as fold_em_sho7 four-bet to 46,880. Sheeeeep decided to five-bet, one for each e in their name, going all-in for just under 170,000 chips. Fold_em_sho7 called and ahead holding A♦K♥ to Sheeeeep's A♠Q♥. Fold_em_sho7 had Sheeeeep sheared when he made top pair on the K♣9♣9♦ flop. The flock would lose a foe when the 3♦ hit the turn as the 3♠ ended the hand, leaving Sheeeeep to finish 9th for $6,405.
Three hands later, it was Shhh00kem taking out jeff710 in 8th place for $8,784. Jeff710 open-shoved for 55,905 with 4♥4♦ as Shhh00kem called from the button with A♣J♦ in yet another all-in classic confrontation. Instead of the usual overcards hitting the board, shhh00kem won on the river when the board read T♠ 8♠ 2♠ 9♦ 7♠, making a runner-runner straight to bring the field down to a magnificent seven.
Next to visit the virtual pay window was donvin21, earning $12,444 for their 7th place finish. Most of their chips were taken by Schappuscha in this hand, as maybe only Jamie Gold can play top-top and win:
Down to 8,228 chips, donvin21 shoved their micro-stack with T♥7♥ as Shhh00kem re-raised to 11,200 with K♣K♠ as menin77 and rua33 called. The Q♣T♦6♦ flop saw Shhh00kem lead out for 19,777 as menin77 and rua33 decided to pass. donvin21 had life with a chance of hitting their five-outer, but the Q♥ killed some of their outs and the 7♣ send donvin21 to the felt leaving a six-pack of contenders.
Shhh00kem was 2nd in chips with six players left, so probably didn't expect to finish 6th, but the former Super Tuesday winner would not pick up another title tonight. After Shhh00kem doubled up menin77, Schappuscha shook down Shhh00kem for the rest of their stack. Blinds were now at 3,200/6,400 with each player anteing 800 as Schappuscha min-raised to 12,800, then Shhh00kem shoved for 98,125 as Schappuscha called. Another coin-flip as Schappuscha led with 6♦6♠ as Shhh00kem turned over A♦J♥. The virtual dealer put out a board of K♠8♣7♥2♦ 4♦ as Shhh00kem padded their bankroll with an additional $16,104.
An attempt at a deal would come minutes later as the remaining players decided to look at the figures. Here's what the host gave for deal amounts, with $3,000 set aside for the eventual winner:
fold_em_sho7 - 548,067 - $53,176.39
menin77 - 396,214 - $44,223.04
MarkusG91 - 341,869 - $41,018.82
rua33 - 299,254 - $38,506.21
Schappuscha - 244,596 - $36,283.54
While menin77 and rua33 quickly agreed, MarkusG91 and Schappuscha wanted a few dollars more. Nearly 20 minutes of wrangling later, the deal was denied and play continued.
We've all heard the stories about people trying use their leverage to get more out of a deal, which gets turned down and that player gets knocked out next. MarkusG91 would be that victim tonight. Each player anted 1,125 with the blinds at 4,500/9,000 when MarkusG91 min-raised from UTG +1 to 18,000. Fold_em_sho7 re-raised to 38,780, then MarkusG91 shipped it for 228,609 with A♦J♦ as fold_em_sho7 called with A♣9♣. MarkusG91 was ready to take the chip lead when the board read A♠T♥6♥Q♠, but the river was the 9♠. MarkusG91's reaction to collecting $20,862 was understandable:
MarkusG91 said, "moå"
MarkusG91 said, "oåj"
MarkusG91 said, "å"
MarkusG91 said, "oef2o"
Now fold_em_sho7 held over half the chips four-handed, and was eager to scoop up the remainder.
Next to fall was rua33, cashing in for $30,195 as fold_em_sho7 continued to accumulate a stack. Blinds were now 5,000/10,000 with an ante of 1,250 as fold_em_sho7 min-raised to 20,000, followed by rua33 shoving for 143,611 chip as the chip leader called. The news wasn't good for the Romanian as their K♠Q♠ was dominated by A♠Q♥ for the Canadian. No help came as the board runs out 6♠5♠3♦ 9♥ 9♦
as fold_em_sho7 tops one million chips.
Schappuscha was the other player passing on a deal, but they benefited slightly from that decision, finishing in 3rd place, picking up $40,260. From the button, Schappuscha min-raised as fold_em_sho7 boosted the pot with a bet of 42,880. Schappuscha looked down at A♣Q♠ and put their remaining 296,464 chips at risk, not happy to see fold_em_sho7 snap-call with K♥K♣. Another board runs out in fold_em_sho7's favor, this time the cards were J♣9♣ 9♦ Q♣ 7♠ as menin77 had a daunting task heads-up trying to stop fold_em_sho7's momentum.
The pair battled briefly, but fold_em_sho7' fortress of chips was too mich for menin77, scoring a 2nd place finish good for $53,070. The final hand featured blinds of 6,000/12,000 with both players kicking in an ante of 1,500 as fold_em_sho7 min-raised from the small blind. Menin77 saw 7♦5♦ from the big blind and decided to make a stand with their last 249,094 chips. fold_em_sho7 liked their A♣J♣ enough to call with a chance to end the tournament. Both players made a pair on the A♠ K♣5♠ flop. The 3♠ turn and 4♦ river meant the checkmark went to the chip leader at the start of the final table, giving fold_em_sho7 70,821 good reasons not to accept a deal.
