Catafract80 collects after four-way chop in 2/4/14 Super Tuesday; James "croll103" Carroll 2nd
This week saw another 600-plus entry field for the Super Tuesday with the 613 who came out for the $1,050 no-limit hold'em tournament the most of the short year thus far. The $613,000 prize pool created was more than double the event's $300K guarantee, and after almost 10-and-a-half hours it was Catafract80 of Venezuela coming from behind after a four-way deal to earn the title and a $73,472.02 prize. The other three deal-makers in fact earned more than that this week, with James "croll103" Carroll taking away the largest chunk of the prize pool of anyone by winning $81,245.17 after taking runner-up.
Just over five hours had passed by the time that big field had been carved down to 72 and the money bubble had burst.
The bubble-bursting hand began with a BoskoRock open and gabrielgpg call. Then Juan Carlos "PrtyPsux" Alvarado reraised all in for about eight-and-a-half big blinds with 9♦9♣ and only gabrielgpg stuck around with A♠T♠. All was fine for PrtyPsux through the turn as the board brought three deuces and a trey, but an ace fell on fifth street to give the hand to gabrielgpg and make Alvarado the unfortunate 73rd-place finisher.
It would take close to two more hours for the field to be carved down to 18 players, and with two tables left Catafract80 had moved into first position with more than 420,000.
A little less than an hour later nine more had fallen, with Stephen "stevie444" Chidwick (18th), Bryan "theczar19" Piccioli (17th), and Canaryw0lf (16th) earning $4,904 each; Rafael "LiroLa" Monteiro (15th), GC_Hooligan7 (14th), urosveliki (13th) taking away $6,130 apiece; and 7/13/12 Super Tuesday winner a.S.e High (12th), CuAt69UsdSng (11th), and mwnnj (10th) each making $7,356.
As the tourney approached the eight-hour mark, the final table was underway with Catafract80 still in front.
Seat 1: Anatoly "NL_Profit" Filatov (Russia) -- 161,339
Seat 2: James "croll103" Carroll (Mexico) -- 339,445
Seat 3: Angelical20 (Mexico) -- 490,253
Seat 4: bearsfan775 (Mexico) -- 71,724
Seat 5: bolivianSWAG (Malta) -- 208,397
Seat 6: cearapoker26 (Brazil) -- 339,488
Seat 7: KungKroon (Sweden) -- 459,164
Seat 8: Catafract80 (Venezuela) -- 544,323
Seat 9: guyguy12 (Israel) -- 450,867
It took about 45 minutes for the first final table elimination to come, during which time the blinds increased to 3,600/7,200. Following an under-the-gun open to 14,400 by James "croll103" Carroll, bearsfan775 reraised all in to 77,138 from a couple of seats over and when it folded back around Carroll called.
bearsfan775 had 8♦8♥ and was hoping the eights would hold against croll103's A♦K♣. But the board rolled out A♣3♣7♥2♥7♣, giving Carroll the better two pair and eliminating bearsfan775 in ninth.
Not long after that hand Angelical20 made a min-raise from the cutoff to 14,400, then cearapoker26 reraised to 32,500 from the small blind. KungKroon then four-bet to 58,895 from the big blind, prompting another reraise to 89,898 from Angelical20. cearapoker26 stepped aside, KungKroon shoved all in for 235,593, and Angelical20 called.
Angelical20 had A♥K♣ and KungKroon J♥J♣. The jacks were best after the T♠2♦6♠ flop and T♣ turn, but the K♠ came on the end to give Angelical20 the hand and KungKroon's run was done in eighth.
They crossed the nine-hour mark, then a few minutes later it was bolivianSWAG opening with a 2x raise to 16,000 from under the gun, then guyguy12 reraised all in to 73,825 from the cutoff. Anatoly "NL_Profit" Filatov then shoved all in for 138,468 from the button. The blinds got out and bolivianSWAG called.
The flop came A♦7♦6♣, pairing guyguy12's ace, and after the 5♠ turn and 2♣ river, bolivianSWAG won the side pot and guyguy12 the main pot while Filatov was knocked out in seventh.
Minutes later the blinds were 4,500/9,000 when Catafract80 min-raised to 18,000 from the small blind, then guyguy12 shoved for 206,198 from a seat over and Catafract80 called. Both had pairs, but Catafract80's K♠K♦ had guyguy12's 3♦3♣ crushed. The board came 4♦5♦6♦J♥T♦, giving both flushes but Catafract80 the best one, and guyguy12 was out in sixth.
Not long after that one bolivianSWAG raised to 18,000 from the button, then cearapoker26 reraised to 45,500 from the small blind. The action moved back to bolivianSWAG who shoved for 211,819 and cearapoker26 called.
bolivianSWAG showed A♠Q♠ and cearapoker26 8♥8♣. The flop came A♣K♥2♣ to pair bolivianSWAG's ace, but turn brought the 8♦ to improve cearapoker26 to a set, making the K♣ on the river too little too late for bolivianSWAG who hit the rail in fifth.
The remaining four played on a short while, then paused the tourney to talk about a possible deal to divide most of the remaining prize money. At that point James "croll103" Carroll led with 956,465, cearapoker26 was next with 915,393, Angelical20 third with 719,032, and Catafract90 fourth was 474,110.
They went back-and-forth for a while, but eventually agreed to an "ICM"-determined chop leaving $6,000 for which to play, and hands were being dealt again.
Before long the blinds were 5,000/10,000 and Angelical20 was raising to 24,400 from UTG. Catafract80 called from the small blind and the pair saw the flop come 7♠3♣8♠. Catafract80 checked, Angelical20 bet 35,353, Catafract80 raised to 110,000, Angelical20 made it 189,895 to go, Catafract80 shoved all in, and Angelical20 called with the 303,628 behind.
As it happend, both players were on flush draws as Catafract80 had K♠J♠ and Angelical20 A♠3♠ for a pair of treys. The turn was the 7♣, then the J♥ fell on the river to give Catafract80 a better pair and send Angelical20 railward in fourth.
Next James "croll103" Carroll raised to 22,000 from the small blind and cearapoker26 called from the big blind, and after the flop came 3♠9♥6♦ croll103 continued for 20,000. cearapoker26 raised to 46,500 and Carroll called. The turn was the 7♥. Carroll checked this time, then called after cearapoker26 bet 95,500.
The river was the 4♣. Carroll checked once more, cearapoker26 pushed for 155,973, and croll103 called without hesitation. cearapoker26 showed T♦9♦ for nines, but Carroll had turned a nine-high straight with 8♥5♣ and they were down to two.
Heads-up play began with Catafract80 ahead with 1,790,117 to James "croll103" Carroll's 1,274,883.
Catafract80 would increase the lead initially, then Carroll managed to grab the advantage after two separate hands in which he was dealt pocket jacks while Catafract80 picked up an ace and would double up both times, once following a preflop all-in and the other on the flop.
That sequence pushed Carroll up over 2 million and Catafract80 back down to just over 1 million, but the latter managed to double back in a hand that saw both players flop top pair on an eight-high board with Catafract80 having the better kicker. croll103 would seize the advantage again, but then Catafract80 grabbed the lead back in another hand that saw both players turn flushes with Catafract80's being the higher of the two.
Carroll battled gamely from there, but Catafract80 kept the lead until the final hand at last arrived.
The blinds were 7,000/14,000 and Catafract80 opened with a raise to 28,000 from the button, croll103 three-bet to 70,000, and Catafract80 called. The flop was J♦Q♠5♠. Carroll led for 67,880 and Catafract80 called again. The turn was the J♠, and this time Carroll check-called a bet of 140,000 from Catafract80.
The river was the A♦ and croll103 checked once more. Catafract decided to push all in and Carroll called the bet with his last 813,460. Carroll had A♥K♥ for aces and jacks, but Catafract80 had trips with J♥T♠ and it was all over.
Congratulations to Catafract80 who after sitting in fourth of four at the time of the deal managed to come back to grab the title and extra $6,000 in cash. And kudos as well to James "croll103" Carroll, cearapoker26, and Angelical20 for making it to that four-way chop to guarantee themselves handsome paydays as well.
