fr0zZy finishes first, earns $80K for 8/19/14 Super Tuesday win
With the 11th season of the European Poker Tour now underway in Barcelona, the Super Tuesday saw a dip in entries this week, ending a streak of increases that had seen the weekly $1,050 no-limit hold'em tournament again crack the 600-player mark a week ago.
Tonight just 453 turned out -- still enough to build a $453,000 prize pool and best the newly increased $400K guarantee -- and after 10 hours and 20 minutes it was fr0zZy of Russia topping them all to earn an $80,300 payday after a heads-up deal with Japan's Namepo.
It would take just over six hours to play down to 54 players and the money in this one, at which point Simon "pokerbrat13" Charette had opened up a lead over the chase pack having chipped up over 180,000 with Pedro "peterwhooo" Corea and Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth the nearest challengers hovering around the 120,000-chip mark.
Less than an hour later they were already down to 18 players. Simon "pokerbrat13" Charette was still in the hunt with an average stack, while Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth had gone out in 22nd and Pedro "peterwhooo" Corea had just hit the rail in 19th, both earning $3,171 for their finishes.
It would take more than 90 minutes for another nine players to fall. $uperdecay (18th), Sean "wormnorton" Getzwiller (17th), and Natsu_27 (16th) were the next out, each earning $4,077. They were followed by Michael "WatchOutFish" Benvenuti (15th), Matt "mjw006" Wakeman (14th), and eijseijs (13th), with those three picking up $4,983 apiece for their finishes. Then hrabbi87 (12th), pickledoe (11th), and Amit "bblacklegend" Jain (10th) hit the rail, each cashing for $5,889.
With Namepo having moved into the top spot with more than 360,000 and several players close behind, the final table was underway.
Seat 1: Simon "pokerbrat13" Charette (Canada) -- 170,044
Seat 2: Aaron "AaronBeen" Been (Mexico) -- 245,897
Seat 3: Douglas "Doug*Dutra" Dutra (Brazil) -- 64,132
Seat 4: Joel "jvieiradias8" Dias (Portugal) -- 243,119
Seat 5: fr0zZy (Russia) -- 330,455
Seat 6: Namepo (Japan) -- 363,347
Seat 7: tupacmn (Germany) -- 321,754
Seat 8: Powergolf (Denmark) -- 172,672
Seat 9: uknowProsky* (Netherlands) -- 353,580
It would take 40 minutes before the first final table elimination came.
With the blinds up to 4,500/9,000, it folded around to Powergolf who open-raised all in for 93,711 from the cutoff. Simon "pokerbrat13" Charette then reraised all in from the small blind, and the pair were heads-up with Powergolf holding A♥T♥ and Charette T♣T♠. The board rolled out Q♠J♥6♣3♥Q♣, and Powergolf was out in ninth.
Play continued, then a big hand developed between uknowProsky* and Joel "jvieiradias8" Dias in which the latter ran K♥K♣ into the A♠A♣ of uknowProsky*, thereby knocking Dias down to less than the 5,000-chip small blind. A few hands later jvieiradias8 was down to less than the 1,250 ante and was automatically all in, and after uknowProsky* opened with a raise it was just the two of them.
jvieiradias8 had 5♣3♦ and uknowProsky* 2♠2♦, and after the 2♥7♦9♦8♦7♥ runout Dias was done in eighth.
Another orbit went by, then two knockouts came in successive hands.
The blinds were still 5,000/10,000 when Douglas "Doug*Dutra" Dutra open-raised all in for 76,078 from the button and got a single caller in Namepo in the big blind. Dutra had A♦8♥ but had run into Namepo's A♣K♣, and five cards later -- J♥T♦A♠3♠7♠ -- they were down to six.
On the very next hand, Aaron "AaronBeen" Been pushed all in from the cutoff for 116,734 (a little less than 12 big blinds) and tupacmn called all in from the big blind for 101,517. Been had 9♥8♥ while tupacmn showed 8♦8♠. The flop came 4♣Q♣J♦, then the T♠ turn gave Been a straight. The river was the Q♠, and tupacmn was done in sixth.
Just a few minutes after that hand, they were in the same level when uknowProsky* min-raised to 20,000 from the button, Been pushed all in for 238,251 from the big blind, and uknowProsky* called. It was A♠7♣ for Been who needed help against the A♣K♣ of uknowProsky*. The community cards came Q♥A♥7♠8♠K♠, and Been was out in fifth.
They continued on past the 10-hour mark of the tournament as the blinds moved up again to 7,000/14,000. Then a hand arose that saw Simon "pokerbrat13" Charette open for 28,560 from under the gun, fr0zZy call from one seat over, then uknowProsky* reraise to 59,711 from the big blind. Charette folded but fr0zZy called, and the two remaining players saw the flop come 8♠6♥5♥. uknowProsky* led for 37,113, fr0zZy raised all in, and uknowProsky* called with the 133,578 left behind.
uknowProsky* had the overpair but still had to fade fr0zZy's flush draw. The K♣ was safe for uknowProsky*, but the river brought the 4♥ to complete the flush for fr0zZy, thereby sending uknowProsky* railward in fourth.
Soon it was fr0zZy opening for a little over 2x with a raise to 30,100 from UTG, Simon "pokerbrat13" Charette three-betting to 77,000 from the big blind, fr0zZy shoving all in, and Charette calling with the 266,603 left. pokerbrat13 had A♠T♦ and two live cards versus fr0zZy's 4♦4♠. The board hit neither of them, though, coming 2♠Q♠6♣8♣J♦ and ending Charette's run in third.
After playing a single small hand, the final two players paused the tournament to discuss a deal with fr0zZy ahead with 1,232,403 to Namepo's 1,032,597. "ICM"-based payouts were presented (leaving $8,000 for the winner), and after tweaking them very slightly an agreement was reached and play continued.
Over the next two dozen hands Namepo would seize a small lead briefly early, but fr0zZy pushed back in front and was up to just over 1.32 million to Namepo's stack of about 936,000 when the final hand took place.
The blinds were still 7,000/14,000, and the hand began with fr0zZy raising to 30,100 again from the button. Namepo made it 93,800 to go, fr0zZy reraised to 201,155, Namepo pushed all in for 934,693 total, and fr0zZy called.
Both players had been dealt big pairs, but fr0zZy's Q♥Q♣ was better than Namepo's J♦J♥. The board then came eight-high -- 6♥2♥8♣2♣3♠ -- and fr0zZy had won.
Congratulations to fr0zZy for outlasting a big field and tough final table to take down this week's Super Tuesday, and kudos as well to Namepo for making it to the heads-up chop and ensuring a big payday as well.
