DWoods19 tops tough final table, takes 3/24/15 Super Tuesday title, $105K
This week's Super Tuesday again drew a large, tough field that included many of online poker's very best, and after almost 10-and-a-half hours of poker DWoods19 of Vietnam was the last one standing, having collected all of the chips and a nifty $105,070 first prize.
DWoods19 topped a strong final table with Ariel "Skilled G" Mantel, Justin "birddy420″ Ouimette, John "bullyon" Buglion, and Kory "s00tedj0kers" Kilpatrick among the final nine. And as listed below there were many more familiar usernames among those making deep runs this week, making DWoods19's triumph all the more impressive. Here's the story of DWoods19's win.
There were 553 participating in this week's $1,050 no-limit hold'em event, thus building a $553,000 prize pool that again exceeded the tournament's $400K guarantee. It took a little under six hours for them to work down to 63 and burst the cash bubble, and over the next hour the field would be further carved down under 30 players.
Among those hitting the rail and cashing during that strech were Martin "nizmo jiz" Kozlov (63rd, $2,433.20), Steven "SvZff" van Zadelhoff (61st, $2,433.20), Seth "SFisch4" Fischer (60th, $2,433.20), Oleg "Fukuruku" Vasilchenko (59th, $2,433.20), Pascal "Pass_72" LeFrancois (52nd, $2,599.10), Jonas "donut604" Mackoff (51st, $2,599.10), Jordan "Jymaster11" Young (50th, $2,599.10), Chris "Run dat Game" Lovett (49th, $2,599.10), Joao Mathias "joaomathias" Baumgarten (47th, $2,599.10), Timothy "Tim0thee" Adams (43rd, $2,765), Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee (40th, $2,765), Thomas "WushuTM" Muehloecker (39th, $2,765), and Martin "Skrigepas" Hansen (30th, $3,041.50)
Soon they were down to 18, with Kevin "Civell" Vandersmissen (29th, $3,041.50), Alex "MrKloutt" Casals (28th, $3,041.50), Joaquín "elmelogno4″ Melogno (24th, $3,318), Nick "caecilius" Petrangelo (22nd, $3,318), Rhys "floppinhel" Jones (21st, $3,318), and Phillipe "takechip" D'Auteuil (19th, $3,319) part of the next wave of knockouts while DWoods19 had ascended to the top of the leaderboard just ahead of DimitrisA7.
Gavin "gavonater" O'Rourke -- who just finished 15th in the Sunday Million two days ago -- was the next out in 18th, followed by Eric2441989 (17th) and Michael "wywrotX" Wywrot (16th), with each of those three picking up $4,424 for their finishes.
John "kleath" Leathart (15th), Aaron "aguskb" Gustavson (14th), and vallepaura (13th) were next out, earning $5,530 apiece. Then Ken "kenny05" Smaron (12th), DimitrisA7 (11th), and dunphi (10th) were successively eliminated, each taking away $6,636.
With Ariel "Skilled G" Mantel the new chip leader and the tournament's nine-hour mark approaching, the final table was underway.
Seat 1: DWoods19 (Vietnam) -- 347,639
Seat 2: chess87 (Germany) -- 623,349
Seat 3: Ariel "Skilled G" Mantel (Argentina) -- 703,900
Seat 4: Kory "s00tedj0kers" Kilpatrick (Costa Rica) -- 208,487
Seat 5: MissBroke (Israel) -- 152,465
Seat 6: John "bullyon" Buglion (Costa Rica) -- 215,546
Seat 7: Justin "birddy420″ Ouimette (Canada) -- 338,008
Seat 8: ForzaVaxholm (Sweden) -- 75,296
Seat 9: Essa_mania (United Kingdom) -- 100,310
On just the second hand of the final table, MissBroke open-pushed from middle position a stack of just over 150,000 (about 23 big blinds), then DWoods19 reshoved from the small blind. MissBroke had A♠J♠ while DWoods19 showed K♦K♠, and after the board came eight-high MissBroke had busted in ninth.
The final eight made it through the nine-hour break, then a hand arose that saw Justin "birddy420″ Ouimette raise all in 360,000 from the button and Essa_mania call all in with the 51,206 left after posting the big blind. birddy420's K♦9♠ was initially behind Essa_mania's A♦3♠, but a king fell on the turn and Essa_mania was done in eighth.
About 10 minutes later the blinds were 4,000/8,000 when leader Ariel "Skilled G" Mantel opened for 17,888 from middle position, then Kory "s00tedj0kers" Kilpatrick reraised all in for just over 155,000 from a seat over. It folded back to Mantel who called, showing J♣J♠ to Kilpatrick's 9♠9♥. The flop fell 4♣T♦J♥ to give Mantel a set, but the K♣ turn did keep Kilpatrick drawing live to a straight. Fifth street was the A♥, however, and Kilpatrick was out in seventh.
A short while later John "bullyon" Buglion lost a big pot versus Justin "birddy420″ Ouimette in a hand that saw the latter all in with A♦J♦ versus Buglion's K♠4♥. The flop came A♥A♣A♠ to give Ouimette quads, and suddenly Buglion was down to less than 400 chips -- not even half an ante. All that went in on the next hand, one won by Mantel, and Buglion was eliminated in sixth.
ForzaVaxholm had started the final table as the short stack with less than 12 big blinds, but had survived through four more eliminations. That streak finally broke after a hand in which ForzaVaxholm open-raised all in from under the gun for just over 100,000 with A♠T♦, was called by chess87 on the button with A♦K♠, and with no improvement from the community cards ForzaVaxholm finished in fifth.
The tournament moved past the 10-hour mark, then came a hand in which Ariel "Skilled G" Mantel opened with a UTG raise to 26,666 (just over 2x), Justin "birddy420″ Ouimette reraised all in for just over 305,000 from the button, then DWoods19 reraised all in over that forcing folds all around. Ouimette had A♣T♠ and two live cards versus DWoods19's 7♥7♣, and following a 4♠3♣2♦ flop the A♥ fell on the turn to hit one of those cards for Ouimette. But the 7♠ followed to complete the board and give DWoods19 a set, and Ouimette's tourney run had ended in fourth.
The final three battled onward with Mantel continuing to lead, then a big hand transpired that began with Mantel raising and then calling a three-bet from DWoods19, then Mantel check-calling a bet following a 9♣Q♥A♦ flop. Mantel led at the 5♥ turn, getting a call from DWoods19, then led again at the 8♦ river. That's when DWoods19 shoved all in and Mantel called, with Mantel showing A♥5♣ for two pair but DWoods19 winning the almost 1.6 million-chip pot with Q♣Q♠ for a set of queens.
A few hands later Ariel "Skilled G" Mantel open-pushed from the small blind with his last 291,055 with K♦J♦, DWoods19 called from the big blind with 5♦5♣, and when the fives held Mantel was sent railward in third.
Those hands helped DWoods19 take a chip lead to heads-up play with nearly 1.8 million versus chess87's just over 970,000.
By the time of the 15th hand between the pair, the stacks were just about the same with DWoods19 having chipped up slightly to add to the lead. Then with the blinds at 7,000/14,000, DWoods19 opened with a raise to 34,567, chess87 reraised to 94,548, and DWoods19 called.
The flop came T♠4♦Q♣. chess87 bet 91,357, and DWoods19 called. The turn was the 2♦, and chess87 bet again, this time 181,234. DWoods19 called once more.
The river brought the 3♥ and a check from chess87, and DWoods19 took that opening to shove all in. chess87 called the shove with the almost 500,000 left behind, showing but A♥K♦ for ace-high. DWoods19 had Q♥7♥ for top pair of queens and it was over -- DWoods19 had won.
Congratulations to DWoods19 for besting this week's talented Super Tuesday field to capture the win and claim a six-figure payday.
