Super Tuesday: fityfmi's first final ends in a win, daskalos20 runner-up again
fityfmi has enjoyed plenty of tournament success at PokerStars, but tonight's appearance at the Super Tuesday final table was a first for the Norwegian. That wasn't the case for most of the other finalists. Among them were a three-time past Super Tuesday champion, two past runners-up, a WSOP Europe High Roller champ appearing here for the second time in a month, and three others each making at least their second career final table appearance. Half of them would depart in the first hour, leaving the others to wage a deep-stacked battle. When all the chips were on the line the cards broke fityfmi's way, giving the Norwegian a first career Super Tuesday title.
fityfmi's journey to the final table was relatively comfortable, including a stretch of nearly two hours on both sides of the bubble as chip leader. The Norwegian never dropped back far from the lead and still had one of the biggest stacks as the final table approached.
Two short-stacked former WCOOP champions ended up being knocked out on different tables, one of them at the eventual champion's hand. On Table 4, fityfmi's A♠ Q♦ held up against short-stacked Bryan "Bryann" Ruiter's K♣ Q♥. And on Table 16, Jean-Pascal "hopezACE" Savard's pocket aces were cracked when daskalos20's pocket tens connected with the 7♥ T♠ 7♣ flop. Bryann took tenth with the shorter stack, and hopezACE got the ninth-place payout, setting up these eight players at this week's final table:
Seat 1: fityfmi (1,250,864 in chips) 2017 SCOOP-Low winner for $141K
Seat 2: Conor "1_conor_b_1" Beresford (508,876 in chips) Super Tuesday runner-up in January after chopping heads-up
Seat 4: Andreas "daskalos20" Christoforou (1,635,828 in chips) Sunday Million winner this summer, Super Tuesday runner-up last December
Seat 5: jaydog321 (523,608 in chips) $109 Sunday Kickoff runner-up last weekend
Seat 6: DeuceofDuc0 (670,539 in chips) WCOOP win & Super Tuesday final in 2017
Seat 7: Ramiro "ramastar88" Petrone (156,380 in chips) past MicroMillions champ & Super Tuesday finalist
Seat 8: Dominik "Bounatirou" Nitsche (346,969 in chips) second Super Tuesday final in the last month
Seat 9: Sebastian "p0cket00" Sikorski (1,081,936 in chips) three-time Super Tuesday champion
The first short-stacked player to put the tournament on the line was DeuceofDuc0, who caught a king on the flop with K♦ Q♣ to top fityfmi's 5♣ 5♠ for a double to 910,488 chips. Five hands later Ramiro "ramastar88" Petrone moved in for 159,780 with A♠ J♦ over the top of Andreas "daskalos20" Christoforou's small raise under the gun. daskalos20 called with Q♣ J♣ and made queens and fives when the Q♦ hit the river, taking down the pot and sending ramastar88 to the rail in eighth.
That left Dominik "Bounatirou" Nitsche on the short stack. He doubled once, defending the big blind all-in with Q♦ J♦ to buy himself some time. About 20 minutes later he took a stand with 2♣ 2♦, opening all-in from the hijack seat heads-up with Sebastian "p0cket00" Sikorski's A♠ K♣. The A♥ hit the turn and that was it for Nitsche in seventh.
Two minutes later Conor "1_conor_b_1" Beresford followed Nitsche to the rail in sixth, running 9♣ 9♠ into DeuceofDuc0's K♣ K♠. DeuceofDuc0 scored the next knockout, too. jaydog321 went for the steal from the small blind, jamming with 9♣ 6♣, and DeuceofDuc0 called with A♠ J♠. jaydog321 turned a pair but DeuceofDuc0 made a flush after the river of the T♦ 5♥ 2♠ 9♠ T♠ board, knocking out jaydog321 in fifth.
The next hour made great viewing for fans of deep-stacked tournament poker. daskalos20 led the way to start at 106 big blinds, with fityfmi still in good shape with 50 big blinds and p0cket00 and DeuceofDuc0 both comfortably in the middle. daskalos20 and DeuceofDuc0 both picked up chips over that stretch, while fityfmi stayed active enough to hold ground. p0cket00 slipped back to last place, though still in contention with a 30-big-blind stack.
Then fityfmi opened on the button with 2♠ 2♥, re-raising all-in after DeuceofDuc0 put in a third bet from the big blind with A♣ K♣. The 2.28-million-chip pot - almost two and a half times larger than any other played up to that point - put fityfmi just a few blinds shy of the lead after the board ran out ten-high. Minutes later the same two players met again when fityfmi min-raised on the button with A♣ 8♣. DeuceandDuc0 pulled a modified stop-and-go, calling the pre-flop raise and then check-raising all-in for 334,751 chips with king-high when fityfmi bet small on the 6♠ 2♣ J♠ flop. fityfmi thought it over and finally called with the best hand, then went runner-runner for trip aces anyway to take the pot and bust DeuceofDuc0 in third.
fityfmi scored another huge win from a coin-flip just four hands later. p0cket00 opened the action all-in for 793,478 chips with 4♥ 4♠ in the small blind and fityfmi, sitting in the big blind for just 35,000 chips, called with A♥ 9♠. p0cket00 was still ahead after the turn but the A♦ hit the river ended his best chance yet at a fourth career Super Tuesday title in third place.
fityfmi closed out the match minutes before the midnight break. The Norwegian player won ten of the first 11 pots heads-up before playing K♠ Q♥ for a raise on the button, playing small-ball to get to the river without investing too many chips, and making a flush on the 2♠ 6♦ 9♠ 7♠ 8♠ board. A value bet there got a call from daskalos20, who mucked and was left with 516,889 chips to fityfmi's 5.65 million. daskalos20 managed to double up a few minutes later after three-bet-shoving with Q♠ T♥ and making a pair of tens to beat fityfmi's A♣ J♦, but two hands later he found himself a Super Tuesday runner-up once again when he moved in with T♦ T♥ and couldn't crack fityfmi's J♦ J♠.
Every Super Tuesday final table is a tough one thanks to the slow structure and the quality of the field, but this one was especially stacked with veteran players. Congratulations to fityfmi on beating them all to claim this week's title!
