Super Tuesday: kirdface wins $76K, denies munchenHB a second title (1-3-17)

The first Super Tuesday final table of 2017 was an opportunity for two different players to win the tournament for the second time in their respective careers. One was knocked out in the earliest stages of the final, but Mike "munchenHB" Telker managed to maneuver himself to a heads-up duel with kirdface, a WCOOP 2016 finalist from the United Kingdom who had led this week's final from the outset. Telker's only choice was to play aggressively, leaving his fate up to timing - and when it worked against him, he was denied a second Super Tuesday title as kirdface earned a first.

This week's field held steady from the last Super Tuesday of 2016. A total of 429 players, three less than last week, showed up to contest this week's installment of the tournament, building a $429,000 prize pool split among the top 62 finishers. By the time late registration closed only 137 of them remained, led by the United Kingdom's Barto7907 with 109 big blinds. An hour later 73 remained, with Norway's amada2003 in the lead with 143 big blinds. Within the next hour IAmSoSo would be knocked out on the bubble, unlocking the prize pool for everyone else.

The blinds and antes were up to 12.5K/25K/2.5K after nine hours and seven minutes of poker when Barto7907 raised all-in from the small blind with A♦ T♣ and TanTanSWE, a past third-place finisher in the Super Tuesday, called in the big blind with 4♦ 4♥. The ace on the flop sealed TanTanSWE's departure in 10th place and set up this final table lineup:

Seat 1: Phil "takechip" D'Auteuil (627,376 in chips)
Seat 2: salfshb (1,448,457 in chips)
Seat 3: kirdface (2,167,332 in chips)
Seat 4: OverTheTop43 (498,191 in chips)
Seat 5: Anton2423 (1,844,918 in chips)
Seat 6: Barto7907 (1,798,713 in chips)
Seat 7: amada2003 (306,772 in chips)
Seat 8: DotComRicher (766,158 in chips)
Seat 9: Mike "munchenHB" Telker (1,267,083 in chips)

Despite a spread in the size of the chip stacks at the table, even the shortest among them weren't in particularly deep trouble as the final began. And when they were forced into action, they won, as amada2003 did for 470K with 4♣ 4♦ in the early going against Barto7907's J♦ 9♥. For more than half an hour, all nine players remained at the table.

The inevitable knockout finally came after past MicroMillions finalist DotComRicher picked up A♠ K♠ in middle position and opened for a minimum raise to 60K. OverTheTop43, a Super Tuesday Special Edition winner during SCOOP 2013, moved in for 92K total in the small blind, and SCOOP 2016 winner Anton2423 re-raised all-in for 2.5M in the big blind. DotComRicher called all-in for 521K total and was up against two players both holding A-9. They were both set to split the pot when the flop and turn came Q♣ 7♠ 9♣ 8♥, but the K♣ on the river made a pair of kings. DotComRicher scooped the 1.1M-chip pot, and instead of doubling up, OverTheTop43 left the tournament in ninth.

The table remained eight-handed for the rest of the hour and stayed that way until 11 minutes after midnight ET, when amada2003 opened the betting all-in for 693K with 7♣ 7♠ and kirdface called with T♣ T♠ in the big blind. Both players made club flushes when the board came 2♣ 8♣ J♣ A♣ 2♦, giving kirdface the 1.43M-chip pot and sending amada2003 to the rail in eighth.

Phil "takechip" D'Auteuil, a past Super Tuesday finalist making his second consecutive appearance at the Super Tuesday final table, was easily the shortest stack now with 227K, good for about five and a half big blinds. He jammed on the next hand with K♦ T♥, got action from anton2423 with 4♠ 2♠ in the big blind, and then dodged a bullet after Anton2423 made a pair on the flop thanks to the T♦ on the turn.

Three hands later takechip pulled off the same feat but for higher stakes, doubling to 1.07M through Anton2423 with A♣ K♦ against A♦ Q♦. salfshb, a past Sunday Warm-Up winner who took third in the $102,000 WCOOP 2016 Super High Roller event, pulled off a nearly identical win two orbits later, doubling to 1.13M with A♦ K♠ against Barto7907's A♠ 9♦, and had the chance to put takechip away in a similar situation a few hands later. takechip open-shoved for 954K with A♥ 9♠ in the small blind and salfshb called with A♠ J♣, only to be left with 159K in chips after the A♣ 9♥ 3♠ 9♣ 6♠ board made nines full of aces and boosted takechip's stack to 1.94M. salfshb got in with A♥ Q♣ a few hands later but couldn't crack Barto7907's 4♣ 4♠ and departed in seventh.

Not long after that, Anton2423 opened the action with a min-raise to 100K. Barto7907 re-raised to 300K in the cutoff seat and takechip shoved for 1.26M in the big blind, clearing Anton2423 out of the way and setting up a pair-over-pair showdown. takechip needed help with K♦ K♠ against Barto7907's A♥ A♠ but got none from the T♣ 8♣ T♦ 5♦ 3♠ board and left in sixth.

DotComRicher was the short stack now with 398K and wasted no time picking up more chips. A double to 896K on the next hand came with A♦ K♥ against Mike "munchenHB" Telker's Q♣ Q♦ thanks to an ace on the flop. Two orbits later DotComRicher doubled through munchenHB again, this time to 1.23M with A♠ K♠ against the past Super Tuesday champion and WCOOP 2011 winner's A♥ Q♣. But the end was near.

Barto7907 opened the action with a min-raise to 120K and DotComRicher called with T♦ 9♦ in the big blind, hitting top pair on the 3♠ 2♣ 9♥ flop. DotComRicher raised to 360K after Barto7907 bet 125K, and Barto7907 called there before moving all-in on the 4♠ turn. DotComRicher called all-in for 741K with a pair of nines, but that was a big underdog against Barto7907's 4♣ 3♣ for two pair, fours and treys. Any ten, nine, or deuce could have saved DotComRicher, but the player from Canada was out in fifth when the 5♦ hit the river.

Mike Telker

Mike "munchenHB" Telker

munchenHB got to work on recovering those lost chips with the table now shorthanded. A♦ A♠ was good for a double to 2.09M through Barto7907, whose 4♠ 4♥ couldn't find any magic on a 2♠ 5♠ T♥ 3♥ 9♠ board. Another 1.1M-chip pot won a few hands later, this time uncontested on the river of a Q♣ 7♣ 6♣ T♥ T♦ board, boosted his stack back to 2.56M, good for second place behind clear leader kirdface's 5.43M.

kirdface would double Anton2423 up to 1.4M chips a few hands later after trying to steal with J♦ 8♣ and being caught by Anton2423's A♦ J♣. But Barto7907's tangle with the leader didn't go as well. After opening for 140K with 6♣ 6♠ and calling kirdface's 425K re-raise, Barto7907 shoved over kirdface's 255K lead on the 9♣ 7♦ 2♠ flop. kirdface called with Q♠ Q♥, the turn and river came 9♠-2♦, and Barto7907 was out in fourth.

Three-hande dplay lasted only seven hands, until Anton2423 opened all-in for 1.08M in the small blind with Q♣ 4♣ and munchenHB calledw ith A♥ 4♦. Drawing dead by the turn of the 3♠ A♦ 9♣ T♦ 2♦ board, Anton2423 was gone in third.

That pot gave Mike "munchenHB" Telker 3.24M chips as heads-up play began. He was well behind kirdface's 7.47M but within one double-up of the chip lead should kirdface slip up, and he made an aggressive play a few hands later with an eye on that double-up and a run at a second career Super Tuesday victory. He limped on the button with 7♠ 6♠ and called kirdface's re-raise to 175K, then called another 163K on the T♣ 5♦ 3♠ flop to see the K♠ hit the turn. Holding draws to a spade flush and a seven-high straight, munchenHB re-raised all-in for 2.2M after kirdface bet 235K - and kirdface quickly called with K♦ K♥ for a set of kings. The 2♣ changed nothing, knocking Mike Telker out in second and bringing the tournament to a close.

Mike Telker's bid for a second career Super Tuesday title was cut short in second place but he did earn a healthy $56,413.50 runner-up prize. That's a top-10 cash for him after nine years of playing tournaments at PokerStars. And kirdface, the newest Super Tuesday champion, snagged a full $76,963.11 after denying Telker and two other past champions a chance to repeat. Congrats to both players for outlasting the field in the first Super Tuesday of 2017!
