Super Tuesday: Mr.Scisso cuts through to $62K victory (4-25-17)

Not all final tables are created equal. Some are all about survival, while others put a greater emphasis on stack management. After arriving a bit early, this week's Super Tuesday final played like a double feature. It took almost an hour and a half to knock the first player out, but then the other seven knockouts came with regularity. A heads-up deal closed it all out, giving Palmero92 a second career runner-up finish in the Super Tuesday and Mr.Scisso a first title.

This week's 399-player field paid out 55 spots, hitting the money after five and a half hours of play. Another two and a half hours had eliminated all but the final two tables, and by 10:22 p.m. ET just these nine players remained to fight for this week's scheduled top prize of more than $72,000:

Seat 1: Erä_Koira (2,064,769 in chips)
Seat 2: Renato "bauruzito" Valentim (823,442 in chips)
Seat 3: Sampsa "mahtipeluri" Hytönen (756,511 in chips)
Seat 4: Palmero92 (1,299,502 in chips)
Seat 5: MPeneda (1,314,933 in chips)
Seat 6: Jonathan "OMGjonyctt" Concepcion (887,250 in chips)
Seat 7: PIPI tapis! (620,986 in chips)
Seat 8: Mr.Scisso (1,149,006 in chips)
Seat 9: DSmunichlife (1,058,601 in chips)

The run-up to the final table had seen the field shrink from 14 to nine in the span of five minutes, concluding with a double knockout on the bubble when MPeneda's A♠ T♦ flopped a pair of aces to sink both MaltLiquor40 and BCE_MOE_05. That quick pace meant the whole table was relatively deep-stacked on the 8K/16K/1.6K level - even short stack PIPI tapis!, a Sunday Warm-Up runner-up in 2012 and winner in 2016, had 39 big blinds to work with.

It was no surprise, then, to see the table remain nine-handed for nearly an hour and a half. Two-time Super Tuesday champion Jonathan "OMGjonyctt" Concepcion survived to win two big all-in pots, one with Q♣ Q♦ against DSmunichlife's T♣ T♦ and another with Q♥ J♠, which made queens and jacks to top Erä_Koira's jacks and treys with J♥ 3♥ in the big blind. But aside from those seven-figure whoppers, small-ball reigned in most pots as the final table moved past the 11:55 p.m. ET break and into Wednesday morning.

PIPI tapis! finally broke the stalemate after opening all-in for 258K on the 17.5K/35K/3.5K level, holding K♣ Q♠. DSmunichlife successfully isolated with A♥ Q♦ and made a Broadway straight on the 6♦ K♥ T♠ 3♣ J♠ board, sending PIPI tapis! out in ninth.

After taking almost 90 minutes to knock out the first player, the rest of the table would see another player eliminated every six minutes on average, starting eight hands later with Sampsa "mahtipeluri" Hytönen. The Finn, whose tournament resume includes multiple deep SCOOP and WCOOP runs, defended the big blind with 9♣ 8♣ and check-raised all-in on a 9♦ 5♠ 7♥ flop. Original raiser DSmunichlife's T♣ T♦ held up after the K♣ turn and 5♦ river, and mahtipeluri left in eighth.

Two orbits passed before Renato "bauruzito" Valentim took a stab at doubling up. Appearing at his third Super Tuesday final table since March, after taking fourth place last week and winning the tournament one month ago, he opened the betting all-in for 462K under the gun on the 20K/40K/4K level. His K♥ Q♦ was matched heads-up with OMGjonyctt, who had isolated with A♣ K♣ and made sevens full of aces after the board came 7♠ 7♣ 7♥ 9♥ A♥. With that, Mr. Valentim's tournament ended in seventh.

A blind-versus-blind coin flip one orbit later ended MPeneda's tournament. The Brazilian with the Hunter Thompson avatar moved in for 804K in the big blind with T♣ 9♦ over the top of a 120K opener from Palmero92 in the small blind. Palmero92, a Sunday Warm-Up winner in 2012 and Super Tuesday runner-up in 2016, called the re-raise with 7♦ 7♥ and promptly made a set on the 7♠ 5♣ 3♥ flop. The 6♦ turn threatened a gutshot straight on the river, but the J♥ came instead and MPeneda left in sixth.

With five players and the stacks relatively deep again, things might have settled into a comfortable rhythm again if not for a flopped flush and a pair of aces. Mr.Scisso held the A♠ A♦ and min-raised under the gun, bringing Palmero92 (in the small blind) and OMGjonyctt (in the big) along on the cheap for a Q♠ 9♠ 5♠ flop. OMGjonyctt's T♠ 4♠ had struck gold, and he check-raised to 500K after Mr.Scisso bet 100K in position and Palmero92 called. He then called all-in when Mr.Scisso jammed, a 68.4-percent favorite with the made flush against Mr.Scisso's draw. The Q♦ turn had OMGjonyctt on the verge of claiming a significant chip lead, but the K♠ on the river turned that upside down. Mr.Scisso claimed the 4.27M-chip pot, and OMGjonyctt left in fifth.

The following pot saw another major clash. Erä_Koira, past winner of PLO events during both TCOOP and WCOOP, opened for 115K under the gun and then re-raised all-in for 1.4M after Palmero92 re-raised to 317K on the button. Palmero92 called with A♣ J♣, which had the edge over K♠ Q♣ and kept it as the board fell 4♣ 5♥ J♥ 3♦ 9♥ to bust Erä_Koira in fourth.

Mr.Scisso opened the action all-in for 5.2M in the small blind three hands later, holding K♣ 6♦, and DSmunichlife called for 604K in the big blind with Q♦ 9♦. The board fell T♦ 3♦ 4♣ 6♥ J♠ to give Mr.Scisso the pot and DSmunichlife, who finished third in the 2/14/17 Super Tuesday, took third place again.

Mr.Scisso and Palmero92 immediately agreed to talk numbers for a deal, and within minutes they were back at the table with the prize pool split evenly between the two of them. And on the first hand back, they both picked up big starting hands for heads-up play. Palmero92 min-raised on the button with Q♥ Q♠ and then called all-in for 4.2M total when Mr.Scisso shoved with A♥ 7♠. The board came A♠ T♦ 7♦ 5♦ J♠ and Mr.Scisso won with a pair of aces to end this week's Super Tuesday.

This was Palmero92's second career runner-up finish in this tournament, and the $62,730.62 from the deal this time made for the U.K. player's fourth-best cash here at PokerStars. Mr.Scisso grabbed the other $62,730.63 and earned the title. Congratulations to both players for outlasting another highly skilled Super Tuesday field!
