Sunday Warm-up: DSavo destroys final table after five-way chop

sunday-warmup-thumb.jpgTonight's $750,000 Sunday Warm-up had a little side action to go along with this Sunday Major. "Little" meaning a lot, as newly minted Team PokerStars Pro Isildur1 (name pending) went up against Isaac "philivey2694" Haxton in the first Superstar Showdown Four tables of $50/$100 NLHE cash games were laid out for 2,500 hands of heads-up play as the 2007 PCA runner-up Haxton, took a ride on the Isildur1 roller-coaster while 4732 players were weaving through a massive field into hopes of raising enough cash to join in on their fun. The first prize of $148,473.41 was certainly enough to get the ball rolling as 675 players would receive at least $321.77 after four hours of play.

Among those in the cash were WCOOP champs James "Andy McLEOD" Obst (127th place, $899.08) and Shaun Deeb (69th place, $1,458.84). Team PokerStars found some representation at the cashier's window as well as Christophe De Meulder who seems to find his way to the money often in this tourney finished in 616th for $331.24 back from the $215.00 buy-in. He was joined by Julian Thew (566th place, $340.70), Thierry "BOKPOWER" van den Berg (276th place, $492.12), winning the battle of the brothers was Matthias de Meulder who took 252nd place for $529.98, and Supernova Elite Randy "nanonoko" Lew (53rd place, $1,779.23).

After Lew's elimination the path was clear of fellow Team PokerStars members for J.P. Kelly to make a big cash run. The two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner was poised to make the final table with six tables remaining but with the blinds at 20K/40K ante 4K, Kelly would re-pop Paris Dedes all-in preflop for 897,323 total holding J♦A♦ Paris thought for a few seconds before covering and making the call with A♠Q♣. After the turn 9♣ T♠ 4♦ 3♦ Kelly found a flush sweat to go with three jacks but the black 8♣ hit the river sending the last Team PokerStars Pro out of the tournament in 47th place ($1,779.23).

It was a blink and you missed it moment as the final nine were being named. Down to 14 players, we eliminated four players in a span of five hands as we came into hand-for-hand play with 10 remaining. book_park would be all-in with an open ended straight flush draw against LUHMAN's flopped bottom two pair, a club on the river would complete the flush as the short stacked book_park took in the 4.1 million chip pot.

book_park would survive the bubble, but Doli would not. With the blinds at 65K/130K ante 13K LOL_FAILURE would lead off the betting with a raise to 284,000 as Doli sitting in the small blind made a play for the chips in the middle by pushing for 2.2 million. LOL_FAILURE held A♣Q♣ and covered the bet while making the call, as Doli turned up the dominated A♠5♦. Finding a five proved to be too elusive for Doli as the board ran out T♣ K♥ 3♣ 7♠ A♦ as LOL_FAILURE took down the 4.7 million chip pot and Doli was left with $5,678.40 in real cash for finishing in 10th place.

No gold star tonight

Just before the players broke for the hourly five minute break we would lose our first final tablist. After the blinds moved up to 80K/160K ante 16K Star---Monke with just ten big blinds shoved for 1.6 million from UTG and almost got all the way around the race track for the blinds and antes. LUHMAN however was sitting in the big blind with pocket jacks J♥J♠ and made the call. A middle ace A♠8♥ for Star---Monke would need some help and seeing the jack on the flop 7♠ J♣ 6♥ was not it. A T♦ on the turn did give Star---Monke four outs to an unlikely straight, but instead the board paired 7♥ giving LUHMAN the 3.5 million chip pot and Star---Monke was let out of the cage in ninth place ($7,571.20).

The 100K/200K ante 20K blind level would prove uneventful as all eight players survived mainly due to the lack of emergence of a large chip leader. No play cracked eight figures in chips and there was only a four million chip difference between first and eighth.

Not a laughing matter

Just as the blinds bumped up to 125K/250K ante 25K LOL_FAILURE tried to snag the blinds with a min raise from UTG but was met with an all-in shove by DSavo out of the big blind. Covered, LOL_FAILURE risked his stack on a call, and put those chips into the middle holding pocket nines 9♠9♣. DSavo made it a coin flip holding A♣J♥ as the winner of the hand would take over the tournament chip lead. LOL_FAILURE had a wide grin and lead going into the river T♦ 3♠ 8♣ 6♣ but the ace A♥ struck down giving DSavo the 9.6 million chip pot and knocking out LOL_FAILURE in a tragic way in eighth place ($11,830.00). The June Sunday Million champion LOL_FAILURE made it known that the victory earlier this year was not fluke and we will be seeing him back at the final table soon.

Big D-estruction

As the blinds moved up to 150K/300K ante 30K LUHMAN would take a stack of 4.2 million and open shove hoping to pick up the now considerable blinds and antes. But, DSavo had something to say about that, watch the video below for the results:

Pocket kings K♣K♥ and a snap call for DSavo as LUHMAN rolled over A♠J♣. A jack would hit the flop, but it was not enough on the Q♣ J♠ 3♠ 7♦ 6♦ board to defeat the chip leader as DSavo who took down the 9.1 million chip pot and increased the chip leading stack to over 17 million chips. $21,294.00 for seventh place and this was not LUHMAN's first shot at a big final table here at PokerStars, LUHMAN made the final table of the Super Tuesday back in April taking fourth for $30K and a fifth place for $22K in March.

Forget Paris

KongeanavU won't forget Paris Dedes after this hand. The blinds holding steady at 150K/300K ante 30K as the short stacked KongeanavU tried to take down the blinds and antes with a 2.09 million chip shove from UTG +1. Paris Dedes had 6.3 million before the hand began and with two suited broadway cards K♥Q♥ made the call. KongeanavU's suited ace 9♥A♥ was promising until two queens rained down on the flop Q♣ Q♦ 5♣. With the lack on an ace on the turn 4♥ KongeanavU was drawing dead by the T♦ river and set up to collect $30,758.00 for sixth place.

Shortly after TeToF snagged a double up at DSavo's expense the final five looked to Team PokerStars online Grayson "spacegravy" Physioc for chip chop numbers. While the chip leading DSavo was skeptical of taking a chop, the numbers fit everyone's wallets as the prize pool minus $10,000.00 to the winner was divided five ways as shown below:

DSavo $117,039.75
j_t_s80 $109,260.08
TeToF $68,538.77
book_park $67,223.16
Paris Dedes $58,438.85

Reason you take a chop, example #80

Shortly after the chop agreements were signed and the blinds moving up to 200K/400K ante 40K the two biggest beneficiaries from the chop locked heads preflop for the biggest pot of the tournament. Watch the 21.4 million chip pot go down below:

j_t_s80 thought DSavo was on steal or perhaps went for a squeeze play, nonetheless j_t_s80's A♥T♠ was in dire straits against the pocket queens Q♥Q♣ of DSavo. The ace-ten never threatened on the J♠ J♣ 6♣ 3♣ 7♠ board and DSavo made the mountain to that extra 10K even steeper after knocking out number two chips, j_t_s80 in fourth place ($109,260.08). This was j_t_s80's second six-figure score in the past month as he took third place at the Sunday Million last month taking down $128,625.00 in the process.

Last Tango in Paris

Nine hands later with the blinds moving up to 250K/500K ante 50K Paris Dedes would open shove from the button for over 11 million chips as book_park looked down at pocket sixes in the big blind 6♠6♣. With almost eight million chips book_park could afford a fold but decided to look for a race and made the call. Unfortunately, Paris Dedes held a pair one pip higher turning over pocket sevens 7♦7♥. But wait! A six on the flop! 9♥ 6♥ 4♦ Indeed a six flopped turning the tables on Paris Dedes for the 17.4 million chip pot. book_park was now looking to dodge a two-outer and as the turn brought the 2♦. The re-suck just waited for the river for dramatic flair as the 7♣ came down as so did book_park's chances at the extra 10K, leaving the table in fourth place ($67,223.16).

When treys strike

The two smaller stacks decided to make one big stack to go up against mega-stacked DSavo heads-up. Here's TeToF and Paris Dedes shoving it in preflop for a 23.4 million chip pot with TeToF only covering by 1.1 million:

TeToF flipped up the weaker ace holding 3♥A♦ to Paris Dedes' A♠7♠ but wasted no time to catch a trey, hitting on the flop and having it hold through the 3♠ 9♥ 5♦ 8♦ A♥ board to eliminate Paris Dedes in third place ($58,438.85).

Rest is for the weak

With blinds at 300K/600K ante 60K and both players similarly stacked, DSavo held a slight chip lead; 23.7 million to TeToF's 23.5 million chip stack there was a lot of poker to be played. But we would not get to see it as both players decided to get it all in the middle after heads-up play's third hand. DSavo held the button and raised to 1.2 million as TeToF made it an even three million. DSavo made the call to see a monotone Q♥ 4♥ 7♥ flop. TeToF checked the scary flop as DSavo led out for 2.1 million as TeToF made no moves to concede the pot and check-raised all-in holding second pair A♠7♠. DSavo took some time but made the correct call holding top pair 9♦Q♦. Three weeks ago DSavo took 4th place in this exact tournament but tonight DSavo was rewarded with the 3♠ on the turn and the tournament clinching 2♣ on the river to win the extra $10,000 and claim the title of Sunday Warm-up Champion!
