Sunday Warm-up: marlin17 is no fish, earning $127K in victory

sunday-warmup-thumb.jpgHope you have been watching some poker this weekend. As the 2011 NAPT PokerStars Caribbean Adventure winds down there was some great action shown not only at PokerStars.TV but through traditional TV as well! First, a co-worker and a dear friend here at the PokerStarsBlog shipped the $1,000 Luxury Ladies Event; check out Kristin Bihr's exit interview at PokerStars.TV after defeating pro Lauren Kling for the $29,798 first place prize. While Kristin was chatting it up on camera, the final table of the PCA Main Event was being aired live on ESPN2 as we got a front row seat to Chris Oliver's victory dance at the final table. Oliver was showing zero signs of slowing down while holding a 4 to 1 chip advantage heads-up against Galen Hall. For those in the United States who stayed up into the wee hours of the morning saw Hall, overturn the deficit and go on to collect the $2.3 million winner's check. 3rd place Anton Ionel punched his ticket to the PCA Main Event for $33 right here at PokerStars and collected $1.35 million, would a similar story of a massive ROI come out of tonight's $750,000 guarantee Sunday Warm-up?

4,614 players lined up the $215 buy-in to produce a $922,800.00 prize pool as they all eyed the $144,770.97 or just enough to enter the Super High Roller, High Roller, and PCA Main Event with enough left over for a few Kalik beers. Three members of Team PokerStars managed to finish in the top 675 players that cashed this evening. Steven Paul, who knows a thing or two about success at the PCA taking down the Main Event in 2006 would finish in 198th place ($599.82) tonight. Vadim Markushevski would also enjoy a deep run tonight but the Russian pro would be stopped in 128th place ($876.66). The last of the Team PokerStars pros alive was Ruben "rubenrtv" Visser who found himself getting a tad short after sitting in the top twenty chip stacks for most of the middle part of the tournament. With the blinds at 10K/20K ante 2K, Visser would open shove from cutoff for 172,776 and got looked up by crackin_ty on the button as the blinds folded. Ruben was happy to see his T♥Q♣ would be racing against the pocket sixes 6♣6♥ of crackin_ty. The smile did not last beyond the flop A♥ 6♠ 2♦ as a third six appeared and with the T♠ turn Visser was earning $1,107.36 in 94th place.

Bubble what bubble?

Normally there's scratching and clawing to prevent from being the dreaded bubble boy but tonight kicked the norm as two players were knocked out on the same hand. e.u.e.w.b. was saying good bye to rest of his 1.6 million chips after calling the three-bet of marlin17 and finding his A♠J♠ far behind the big slick of marlin17 K♠A♦. No flush sweat and no jacks on the 5♦ 2♦ 2♠ 3♦ 8♥ board ended e.u.e.w.b.'s night in 11th place ($5,536.80). Across on way on Table 195 noworkteam1 was willing pocket fours 4♥4♦ to hold up against DRUNK&UGLY's big slick K♣A♠ on a T♦ 3♦ T♥ Q♥ board. Several outs available, 4.3 million chips in the middle with blinds at 65K/130K and 13K antes, and the counterfeiting out would hit as the Q♦ came down and DRUNK&UGLY's ace kicker played, sending noworkteam1 back to the cubical in 10th place ($5,536.80) and kicked off our final table tonight.

River card not needed

Shortly after the final table started up, the blinds would move up to 80K/160K ante 16K and River59 sitting with 3.5 million shoved that amount into the middle from UTG+1 as the table quickly folded around to RikTee in the big blind who couldn't call quickly enough with pocket aces A♠A♥. Pocket jacks J♣J♦ in River59's hand looked rather limp and faded into the muck quickly after an ace hit the flop and the turn paired the board Q♦ A♣ 8♥ 8♣ 9♠ giving RikTee a full house and the 7.2 million chip pot. With River59's last chips washed downstream $7,382.40 was shipped to port for ninth place.

Just plain ugly

While shortstacked it is a conclusion you will get called with a variety of hands while all-in. Check out NOBMERLIN try to conjure up a win against DRUNK&UGLY.

In the battle of players who found the CAPS LOCK KEY, NOBMERLIN shoved 955,811 chips over the top of DRUNK&UGLY's 400,250 chip raise. With the blinds at 100K/200K ante 20K, DRUNK&UGLY had plenty of chips to call with 4♦5♥ as NOBMERLIN found J♥A♦ looking to claim the 2.3 million chip pot. K♦ 2♣ 6♥ on the flop opened up four more outs for DRUNK&UGLY and the gutterball straight would hit 3♦ on the turn shipping the pot to DRUNK&UGLY as NOBMERLIN's avatar disappeared into thin air with eighth place money ($11,535.00).

Favorites not favored tonight

Still sitting in the 100K/200K ante 20K blind level shortly after the ninth hourly five minute break, tnetter tried picking up the blinds with a shove for 1.02 million holding A♣T♦. Folded to Digable in the big blind sitting on 6.7 million in chips, would make the call for 800K more holding a lesser ace 8♥A♦. Lesser only before the flop as Digable found two pair on the flop 7♥ A♥ 8♦, the hand was not done by a long shot as the 9♣ hit the turn opening up eight more outs for a re-suck. 3♥ on the river did not complete the straight and tnetter's night was done in seventh place ($20,763.00). This wasn't tnetter's first run at a Sunday Major title, tnetter ran a little better a few years ago in the Sunday Million netting $63K for a fifth place finish.

Favorites not favored tonight: Part II

Watch Dr. Yuba surgically extract the last of Digable's chips in the video below:

Digable played a sly min-raise from UTG with blinds at 125K/250K ante 25K as Dr. Yuba made the call in the big blind. Flop comes 9♥ 8♣ 3♣ and Dr. Yuba checked to the raiser and Digable followed thru with a 800,000 bet. Dr. Yuba quickly raised enough to put Digable all-in and Digable snap called for 4.6 million holding pocket kings K♠K♦, second best hand in Hold Em' preflop. Post flop however, Dr. Yuba's top two pair 9♦8♦ might as well been aces as a second nine hit the river 9♥ 8♣ 3♣ 2♥ 9♠ as an exclamation point on the 12.1 million chip win for Dr. Yuba. Digable found Dr. Yuba's spike too tough to return and finished the tournament in sixth place ($29,991.00).

Might be time for a drink

The blinds moved up to 150K/300K ante 30K and DRUNK&UGLY surviving on blind steals for awhile finally shoved over the top of a 750K raise by RikTee. Facing the 3.7 million chip raise by DRUNK&UGLY, RikTee checked the pocket four in his hand and decided to make the call hoping for a race. Big slick for DRUNK&UGLY provided the race and board spilled out all low cards 6♥ 5♥ 6♦ 8♦ 7♣ favoring the pocket sailboats of RikTee for the 7.8 million chip pot and sending DRUNK&UGLY to the nearest pub with an extra $39,219.00 acquired in fifth place.

Safely navigating the rough seas

Just three hands later the largest pot to this point in the tournament would start off with xianggangdao raising to 725,000 chips from the cutoff as marlin17 in the big blind re-raised to 1.8 million. Back to xianggangdao who shoved for 10.3 million chips and passed the decision to marlin17 who had enough chips to bust the Hello Kitty avatar. Pocket jacks J♥J♠ was the choice of weapon and marlin17 made the call holding those jacks as xianggangdao flipped up a suited big slick A♥K♥. xianggangdao would find a gutshot straight on the turn 8♦ 2♦ 4♠ 3♠ but the J♦ river preserved the 20.9 million chip win for marlin17 as xianggangdao finished just outside of the three-way deal in fourth place ($52,138.20).

Did I mention a deal?

Instead a long, drawn out negotiations riddled with "my stats kick your stats a**" and other internet flexing, the numbers below were shown and three quick "I agree" replies in the chat box meant all three were going home with six figures tonight:

marlin17: $117,568.67
RikTee: $100,748.80
Dr. Yuba: $100,054.70

$10,000.00 set aside for the champ tonight as the remaining three would kick off with 200K/400K ante 40K blinds and marlin17 holding a decent lead on RikTee and Dr. Yuba.

Flat line

After losing a big 23 million chip pot to marlin17, Dr. Yuba would tread lightly with a short stack of just five million chips blinds at 200K/400K ante 40K and attempted a shove from the button holding pocket treys 3♣3♥. marlin17 would fold, but RikTee would not, calling with A♠5♦ from the big blind. All diamonds on the flop K♦ 7♦ Q♦ favored RikTee who held just one plus two overcards, and the turn provided the fourth diamond on the board 6♦ giving RikTee a flush leaving Dr. Yuba gasping for a counterfeiting fifth diamond. Instead the card was black 2♠ and Dr. Yuba's tournament life could not be revived as the good doctor would take $100,054.70 from the chop agreement in third place.

RikTee vs. marlin17

The big money was off the board but only one person gets to call themselves a Sunday Warm-up champion tonight and receive $10,000.00 for the win. Both players would start out fairly even as marlin17 held a slight edge in chips 23.2 million to RikTee's 22.8 million and with blinds starting at 200K/400K ante 40K they would have plenty to play around with.

A race for the title?

42 million in the middle, RikTee covers by just four million, watch the cards run over below.

marlin17 Q♣A♠
RikTee T♦T♥

An ace on the door shot down RikTee's pocket tens and held on the A♣ J♠ 6♠ 9♣ 2♦ board and RikTee was crippled to just four million chips and blinds at 300K/600K ante 60K as the players battled for over a half hour to this point. marlin17 would continue to lean on RikTee who managed to double up once two hands later by eventually would succumb when marlin17's A♥6♥ would out run RikTee's Q♥2♣ on a J♥ 8♠ 3♦ 8♣ 7♣ board for the final 9.5 million chips. And just as Michael Binger collected a huge pot off Shaun Deeb in the PCA shootout being aired live on PokerStars.TV marlin17 became this week's Sunday Warm-up champion earning a total of $127,568.67 for the victory!
