Sunday Warm-Up: Jason "jakoon1985" Koon crushes, banks $110k

Jason "jakoon1985" Koon is a man in the midst of a career year. In 2012 he's earned more than half a million dollars in live tournaments alone, including fourth place in the PCA High Roller event for $272,000 and a runner-up finish in the $3,000 heads-up NLHE/PLO event at the WSOP. Online, he's already won three major titles-- the Super Tuesday, the Sunday 500 and a 2009 SCOOP title that earned him over $300,000. As if he needed to prove anything more, Koon is a champion once again, taking down this week's Sunday Warm-Up for just short of $110,000.

3,499 players came out for this week's Warm-Up, creating a $699,800 prize pool. 540 spots were paid, with first place set to earn $109,869.77. This field was littered with Red Spades, including Humberto Brenes, Liv Boeree, Christian de Leon, Vanessa Selbst, Ivan Demidov, Andre Akkari, Angel Guillen, and Victor Ramdin. Five made the money: Team SportsStar's Fatima De Melo (438th), Team Online's Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen (410th), and Team Pros Alex Kravchenko (65th), Richard Toth (47th), and Ana Marquez, who made the deepest run of the Red Spades, finishing in 44th place.

Down to twelve and a half big blinds, mrAndreeew made a move on the final table bubble, open-shoving for 1.64 million from the small blind with pocket threes. Jurata_PL called from the big blind J♥T♥ and hit a jack on the flop to take the lead. MrAndreeew picked up a flush draw on the turn, but couldn't fill it on the river, and he hit the rail in tenth place, setting the final table.

jurata_PL ousts buckguy2200 and papafast1

The second hand of the final table produced its first elimination. After jurata_PL opened for a min-raise to 260,000, buckguy2200 shoved for 1.56 million from the cutoff. Hasuzlasu cold-called from the small blind with T♥T♠ and jurata_PL ducked out of the way. Buckguy2200's A♦8♠ flopped top pair, but it was no match for hasuzlasu's set of tens, the board running out A♣J♦T♦2♣7♣ to send him home in ninth place.

The blinds rose to 80,000/160,000 and short-stacked papafast1 pulled the trigger with A♠J♣, three-bet shoving for 1.49 million on the button. Jurata_PL called with Q♥T♥ and promptly caught up by pairing his queen on the K♥Q♦5♣ flop. Papafast1 was looking for an ace to make top pair or a ten to fill his gutshot, but got the 7♣ and the 6♠ instead, and exited in eighth place.

Short stacks clash

Pasty71 came into the final table with only 1.9 million and saw nearly half his stack blinded away before he picked up 7♥7♠ and three-bet shoved for 1.05 million. Jakoon1985 called with A♣J♦ and paired his jack on the flop, the board running out J♥T♣3♠K♦9♠ to eliminate pasty71 in seventh place. Two jumps up the pay ladder complete, pasty71 banked $15,745.50.

Following pasty71's exit, two extreme short stacks were still in the mix. They ended up confronting each other when sneker moved in for 1.16 million from UTG and Veritas0086 called all-in for 834,500 from the small blind. Sneker's A♠T♠ dominated Vertitas0086's A♥5♥ and it stayed that way, sneker's ten kicker playing on the Q♦9♦8♣K♦7♠ board. For sixth place, Veritas0086 collected $22,743.50 while sneker doubled to 2.2 million.

TryToExploit runs into jakoon1985's aces

Thus far, jakoon1985 had kept himself out of major confrontations while steadily increasing his chip count. He moved from 6.7 million to start the final table to 9.3 million during five-handed play, when he picked up the perfect hand at the perfect time. After TryToExploit made a UTG min-raise to 400,000, jakoon1985 three-bet to 947,777 with pocket aces in the small blind. TryToExploit four-bet to 1.49 million, jakoon1985 shoved for 9.28 million, and TryToExploit called, turning up A♥K♠. Jakoon1985's aces held up and TryToExploit was suddenly on the rail in fifth place.

hasuzlasu falls in fourth, sneker survives to third

Still hanging on with eight big blinds, sneker scored another double up when his Q♠Q♥ held up against jurata_PL's A♦T♠. Now up to 4 million, sneker was able to stick it out and survive another pay jump when jakoon1985 took out hasuzlasu in fourth place, his K♥Q♥ winning a kicker battle against K♦2♦:

With three players remaining, jakoon1985 held a commanding lead with 22.9 million, jurata_PL held 8.8 million, and sneker brought up the rear with 3.3 million. However, both short stacks quickly found new life. First, sneker's A♣4♠ made a six-high straight against jurata_PL's K♥Q♦ to take him up to nearly 6 million. Then, jakoon1985 had his J♠J♣ snapped off by jurata_PL's A♦6♣ when he caught an ace on the turn. That hand set off a mini-rush, jurata_PL doubling again through jakoon1985 and scooping up a series of small pots to move into the chip lead. Jakoon1985, however, put an end to that and regained the top spot when his Q♠T♥ flopped top pair against jurata_PL.

Sneker's run finally came to an end on a coinflip, his open-shove with 7♠7♦ called by jakoon1985 with Q♥J♥. A jack hit the flop and that was all she wrote for sneker, who collected $57,733.50 for third place.

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 1: jurata_PL (10,412,177 in chips)
Seat 7: jakoon1985 (24,577,823 in chips)

As heads-up play commenced, jurata_PL approached jakoon1985 about a deal, but with a polite "no thank you, good luck," jakoon1985 put the kibosh on that. Their battle was measured and tense, the two twice getting their chips in with the same hand to chop (AK vs. AK and AQ vs. AQ). With their stacks essentially back to where they were at the start of their match, the two limped in and saw a 9♦5♣2♦ flop. Jurata_PL check-raised to 1.25 million, jakoon1985 three-bet to 2.37 million, jurata_PL four-bet to 3.5 million and jakoon1985 called. The rest of their stacks went in on the A♦ turn, jurata_PL shoving for 7.7 million and jakoon1985 calling with A♥5♦ for aces up. Jurata_PL turned over 9♣2♣, his flopped top and bottom pair undone by the turn. The river was the 6♠ and jakoon1985 locked up his fourth major PokerStars title.

Kudos to Jason "jakoon1985" Koon on adding a Sunday Warm-Up title to his already-impressive poker C.V. He banked $109,869.77 for the win while runner-up jurata_PL earned $81,876.60.
