TCOOP: PURGER111 coughs up a win in Event #13 ($33 NLHE)

13996-TCOOP-thumb.pngOn a normal weekend we call this one the "Saturday Speedway," a catchy little name for a $33 buy-in turbo affair. And on a normal weekend it would carry a $50,000 guarantee and award its winner somewhere in the neighborhood of $12,000. But this is no ordinary weekend. This is TCOOP, boys and girls, and despite doubling the Speedway's guarantee to $100,000, PokerStars players managed to blow that inflated number out of the water. 8,014 souls entered TCOOP Event #13, taking the prize pool up to $240,420. 1,170 of them went home with at least a few bucks for their troubles, with first place set to earn $36,068.29. Ten representatives of Team PokerStars were in the field-- George Danzer, Martin Staszko, Adrienne "talonchick" Rowsome, Jude Ainsworth, Fatima De Melo, Pierre Neuville, Pat Pezzin, Marcin Horecki, Kevin "WizardOfAhhs" Thurman, and Henrique Pinho, but in a relatively rare "COOP" occurrence, none of them finished in the money.

The money bubble burst after only ninety-five minutes, and two hours after that, only ten players remained. With the blinds up to 90,000/180,000 CaffeJoe opened for a min-raise to 360,000, sadam83 moved all-in for 1.93 million from the cutoff, and a severely short-stacked maarjaara called all-in for his last 260,000. CaffeJoe got out of the way and sadam83 revealed A♠K♥, leaving maarjaara's A♦5♦ dominated. Maarjaara did not improve on the Q♦J♥J♠2♠7♦ board, leaving us with our final nine.

Final table chip counts:

Seat 1: JojjeAA (4,376,721 in chips)
Seat 2: sadam83 (2,919,992 in chips)
Seat 3: CaffeJoe (1,674,664 in chips)
Seat 4: St3phenHendr (3,742,996 in chips)
Seat 5: snats2607 (2,647,750 in chips)
Seat 6: PURGER111 (897,687 in chips)
Seat 7: Laz-Of (4,933,561 in chips)
Seat 8: TheGenius123 (1,836,495 in chips)
Seat 9: chipsEclipse (1,012,134 in chips)

PURGER111 went into the final table as the shortest stack and found a double-up on the first hand, his A♣K♣ winning a race against TheGenius123's pocket jacks. Four hands later, TheGenius123 three-bet shoved with pocket eights for his last million in chips. CaffeJoe called with pocket sixes and caught top set on the flop, the board running out 6♦5♣2♦A♦9♣ to send TheGenius123 to the rail in ninth place. His departure left chipsEclipse as the short stack with only 940,000. Although chipsEclipse managed to double up against JojjeAA to take his stack up to 2 million, JojjeeAA recovered those lost chips only a few hands later after chipsEclipse made an ill-timed turn bluff to go out in eighth:

St3phenHendr was next to put his tournament life at stake, moving in for 2.1 million with A♥T♠. PURGER111 called with 7♠7♦ and although St3phenHendr hit top pair on the A♠K♠9♠ flop, PURGER111 spiked a set on the turn with the 7♣. The 9♦ on the river improved him further to sevens full, ending St3phenHendr's run in seventh place. Moments later, the action folded around to snats2607, who moved all-in from the small blind with Q♦J♥. Unfortunately for him, PURGER111 woke up with A♠9♠ in the big. Neither player improved on the eight-high board, PURGER111 taking down the 4.28 million pot while snats2607 exited in sixth place.

Five-handed play continued for almost ten minutes, the blinds rising to 140,000/280,000 before everyone agreed to pause the action and discuss a deal. Over twenty minutes of discussion followed and although four of the five agreed to a chip count chop, CaffeJoe wanted to leave more than the required $2,000 in play for the eventual winner. After short stack sadam83 refused to give up anything and big stack PURGER111 balked at putting several thousand dollars of his potential share into play, negotiations broke down and play resumed.

Sadam83 doubled through CaffeJoe straight away, his K♥9♥ turning top pair and rivering two pair against CaffeJoe's pocket sixes. Sadam83 moved up to 4.2 million in chips but before long they were back in CaffeJoe's stack when his K♦J♥ did not improve against A♥9♥. Sadam83 was left with 954,000 and although he picked up pocket aces two hands later to double through Laz-Of, PURGER111 finished him off in fifth place. Watch how this one runs out (ouch):

On the next deal, JojjeAA moved in for his last 1.1 million with A♣3♣ and got two callers-- PURGER111 and Laz-Of. PURGER111 led out for 640,000 on the T♦8♣4♠ flop and Laz-Of folded. PURGER111 turned over K♦T♥ for top pair while JojjeAA was looking for an ace or a couple of clubs with A♣3♣. The turn and river, however, were no help to JojjeAA and he departed in fourth place, earning $12,117.16.

Three hands later, Laz-Of check-raised all-in for 4.25 million on a Q♥8♦3♠ flop. CaffeJoe quickly called and turned over pocket aces, leaving Laz-Of's Q♣9♠ in dire shape. The 8♠ on the turn didn't help, neither did the 2♣ on the river and Laz-Of hit the rail in third, a fat consolation prize of $18,031.50 awaiting him.

Heads-up chip counts:

Seat 3: CaffeJoe (12,385,182 in chips)
Seat 6: PURGER111 (11,656,818 in chips)

Shortly after heads-up play began, CaffeJoe proposed an even chop and PURGER111 agreed to pause the action. A few minutes later, they had a deal, each player taking home $30,257.25 with $2,000 still in play.

When action resumed, first blood went to PURGER111. On a 9♥7♣5♦ flop, CaffeJoe flopped bottom pair with T♣5♠ and PURGER111 hit middle pair with J♦7♦. CaffeJoe check-called PURGER111's 720,000 bet before the J♥ hit the turn, making PURGER111 two pair. CaffeJoe led out for 870,480, PURGER111 raised to 2.52 million and CaffeJoe called. Both players checked the 6♠ on the river, the 7.27 million pot taking PURGER111 up to 14.2 million.

Although CaffeJoe was able to claw his way back and even the score, his downfall came when he ran an ill-timed bluff. Holding 7♦8♥, PURGER111 opened for a min-raise to 900,000 and CaffeJoe called with J♦T♦. The 9♣7♠6♣ flop was boffo for PURGER111, giving him middle pair and an open-ended straight draw. CaffeJoe checked his gutshot and overcards, PURGER111 bet 900,000, and CaffeJoe raised to 2.7 million. PURGER111 three-bet to 4.5 million and CaffeJoe called. The Q♦ on the turn gave CaffeJoe an open-ended straight draw and with nearly 11 million already in the pot, there wasn't much else to do but move all-in for his remaining 4.87 million. PURGER111 called. CaffeJoe needed an eight, a king, or a jack to survive, but the 2♣ fell instead, sealing up PURGER111's TCOOP win.

Congratulations to PURGER111 for going from final table short stack to TCOOP champion! He picked up $32,257.24 for the win while runner-up CaffeJoe collected $30,257.25.
