TCOOP 2017: 8 - 7 = 271066 in Event #56, $82 NLO8 (8-Max, Progressive KO [33%], Players' Voice #2)

This year's TCOOP schedule featured two unique tournaments known as the Players' Voice Events, each featuring a game and format chosen by PokerStars players. The second of those tournaments played out today as Event #56, with No-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo the game of choice and a 33% Progressive KO bounty on every player's head. Player 271066 of the Netherlands arrived at the final second in chips before winding up in last place with four players remaining. But with some fight and a little bit of help from the deck in dodging opponents' low draws, 271066 managed to outlast the rest of the field to walk away with a first career COOP title.

The prospect of playing 8-Max NLO/8 with bounties was attractive enough to draw a field of 1,107 players to this final Players' Voice Event of TCOOP 2017. That set up an $83,025 prize pool, with $27,765 set aside for bounties and the other $55,350 to be split among the top 135 finishers.

After almost exactly five hours of poker, Dhr. Awesome knocked out Greece's sensei-oss in ninth place to set up this final table:

Seat 1: mai0h123 (2,568,112 in chips, $735.30 bounty)
Seat 2: noeljohn250 (669,220 in chips, $854.64 bounty)
Seat 3: Chris "ImDaNuts" Oliver (502,826 in chips, $239.83 bounty)
Seat 4: Lehis_69 (1,165,620 in chips, $697.61 bounty)
Seat 5: Dhr. Awesome (1,775,588 in chips, $646.84 bounty)
Seat 6: Vega Lyrae (809,279 in chips, $791.74 bounty)
Seat 7: kalosVB (1,764,761 in chips, $591.37 bounty)
Seat 8: 271066 (1,814,594 in chips, $414.04 bounty)

Three players were working with 11 big blinds or less as the table opened on the 35K/70K/8.75K level. One of them was Russia's Vega Lyrae, who opened the third hand all-in for 783K with A♣ J♦ 6♣ 2♣ under the gun. mai0h123 raised and successfully isolated in middle position with A♥ K♣ Q♣ 4♣, a slight favorite thanks in part to having three blockers against a potential club flush. Vega Lyrae looked likely to at least split the pot after the 5♣ 6♦ 9♣ flop left the Russian drawing to the nut low. But after the 5♥ turn and 5♦ river, no low was possible; mai0h123's A♥ K♣ played for the high, and Vega Lyrae left the tournament in eighth place.

Ireland's noeljohn250 avoided a similar fate three hands later, making a straight on the river of a 9♠ J♠ 2♠ J♥ Q♦ board to double through kalosVB for 1.66M. Then the Irish player picked up A♠ A♥ J♣ 6♣ and opened the betting all-in from the hijack seat. Chris "ImDaNuts" Oliver, who won the Turbo Takedown in 2009 and finished second in the TCOOP 2012 Main Event, called for 176K with A♣ Q♦ T♥ 4♣ and was drawing to the nut low after hte J♦ 3♠ 5♣ flop. But the 3♣ turn and J♥ river changed nothing other than to improve noeljohn250's hand to trip jacks, sending ImDaNuts to the rail in seventh.

noeljohn250's good fortune continued a few orbits after the Irish player picked up A♣ A♦ 3♠ 2♦ in the cutoff seat and raised to 300K. kalosVB re-raised all-in for 1M with K♥ K♠ 5♦ 4♦ and noeljohn250 called, making a set of aces with the nut low on the A♠ 6♣ 8♥ flop. kalosVB still had a gutshot straight draw, but the turn and river came T♥-T♣, giving noeljohn250 aces full of tens for the high and the nuts for the low and knocking kalosVB out in sixth.

The rest of the 50K/100K/12.5K level had several split pots but no knockouts, and the center of the action on the 60K/120K/15K level was a double-up for Dhr. Awesome, a two-time Super Tuesday winner with SCOOP 2016 and TCOOP 2017 titles. The Dutch player called all-in for 1.1M total, holding A♠ 7♦ 6♣ 4♦, after Lehis_69 raised the button with A♥ J♦ 9♦ 3♥. The 3♠ Q♥ 4♥ 6♦ K♠ board made sixes and fours and a 7-6-4-3-A low to give Dhr. Awesome the 2.1M-chip pot. But when the two clashed again a few hands later, Lehis_69 took three-quarters of the pot, winning the high and tying for the low to leave Dhr. Awesome with just under 1.3M.

Dhr. Awesome defended the big blind two hands later against a cutoff raise from mai0h123 but folded after the flop, taking the Dutch player's stack down to 933K, or just over five big blinds. mai0h123 raised the next hand with 7♦ 7♥ 4♦ 3♥ and then called when Dhr. Awesome jammed from the small blind with A♥ A♠ J♣ 5♠. mai0h123 went from slight udnerdog to slighter underdog after picking up a heart flush draw on the K♥ 6♠ J♥ flop, but Dhr. Awesome's aces moved further ahead after adding a spade flush draw on the 4♠ turn. That same card gave mai0h123 a gutshot straight draw, though, and that draw came home with the 5♣ river to give mai0h123 the high half of the pot. mai0h123 also had the only low, so the German player took the other half as well and Dhr. Awesome left in fifth place.

The turning point

With four players left and the tournament headed to its 8:55 p.m. ET break, mai0h123 had the advantage:

Seat 1: mai0h123 (5,240,746 in chips, $1454.59 bounty)
Seat 2: noeljohn250 (3,759,307 in chips, $1270.23 bounty)
Seat 4: Lehis_69 (1,134,103 in chips, $697.61 bounty)
Seat 8: 271066 (935,844 in chips, $414.04 bounty)

The two short stacks clashed on the first hand back from the break, holding similar hands. Lehis_69 had Q♦ J♥ T♦ 6s] and the edge in chips, but it was 271066 who ended up winning the 1.9M-chip pot with J♣ T♠ 9♣ 4♠ with a spade flush on the J♠ A♠ A♥ 5♠ 5♣ board. Thee hands later Lehis_69 defended the big blind all-in with Q♣ J♣ 6♣ 5♠ when mai0h123 raised the button with A♦ 9♥ 4♥ 2♦. mai0h123 was drawing to a wheel after the 3♠ 4♠ 8♥ flop and got there on the 5♣ turn. Lehis_69 was still drawing to a better straight, but the 5♥ river didn't make it and Lehis_69 was gone in fourth.

The turning point for 271066 came on not just the following hand, but the following two. First the Dutch player open-shoved with A♣ Q♠ T♠ 4♦ in the small blind. mai0h123 called with A♥ J♣ 5♣ 2♣ but missed the 8♦ T♦ 9♣ 7♠ 2♠ board completely, giving the 3.1M-chip pot to 271066. The same two players clashed on the next hand, too. 271066 opened with a min-raise to 400K, holding A♠ 8♣ 7♠ 2♦, and called all-in when mai0h123 jammed in the big blind with A♦ K♣ 9♦ 7♣. The board came Q♣ 4♦ 2♣ T♥ 4♥, leaving no possible low, and 271066 took down the pot with a two pair, fours and deuces.

mai0h123 fought back from that loss, doubling through both opponents and reclaiming the lead by a little more than one big blind within the next three minutes. Then both of those opponents clashed heads-up before the flop after 271066 open-shoved on the button and noeljohn250 called all-in for 1.5M. noeljohn250's 8♦ 7♦ 5♣ 2♠ was a 2-to-1 underdog before the 9♦ T♣ Q♠ flop made a pair of tens for 271066's A♦ T♠ 8♥ 5♥. The 4♥ turn and 9♥ river gave both players a pair of nines with no low, but the addition of the tens from the flop gave 271066 the edge. The Dutch player took down the 3.2M-chip pot, and noeljohn250 left in third.

That pot gave 271066 a 10-big-blind lead as heads-up play began, and that was all the Dutch player would need. 271066 called mai0h123's button raise on the first hand and then another small bet on the flop before checking down the rest of the T♥ K♠ J♥ J♠ J♦ board. 271066 showed 8♦ 8♥ 7♣ 3♥ for jacks full of eights and took the 1.7M-chip pot when mai0h123 mucked.

After one steal, one 1.7M-chip pot won uncontested on the turn of a 9♥ A♦ Q♠ 3♦ board, and one split pot, mai0h123 opened the betting all-in for 3.2M on the button, holding K♥ T♠ 7♦ 5♠. 271066 called with A♦ Q♣ T♥ 4♠, which made top pair on the 8♠ J♠ A♣ flop but was behind in equity to mai0h123's flush, gutshot, and low draws. The T♣ made two pair for 271066, leaving all of those draws live, but they all ground to a halt with the 7♥ river. mai0h123's pair of tens couldn't beat aces and tens, and the tournament drew to a close.

mai0h123 was unable to hold the chip lead from start to finish, but ending as the runner-up was worth $6,459.32, plus another $1,803.39 in bounties. And 271066 earned $8,984.27 as the champion, plus $1,950.84 in bounties. Congratulations to both players for kicking off TCOOP 2017's final weekend in style!
