TCOOP 2017: Mike "goleafsgoeh" Leah goes and gets another, wins Event #38 ($82 NL Draw 2-7)
Canadian pro Mike "goleafsgoeh" Leah has proven time and again his tournament poker prowess, both in no-limit hold'em and a wide variety of other variants. After collecting a couple of WCOOP titles previously, Leah won two SCOOPs last spring (one in limit hold'em, the other in seven-card stud) to go along with what is now more than $5.5 million in live tournament earnings -- a total boosted this month at PokerStars Championship Bahamas where he earned five cashes including a victory in a $10K Turbo Super Knockout event.
Leah's had a lot of practice, then, posing for these winner's photos such as he did for the one below, taken just a couple of weeks ago.
Well, he's done it again. Add a TCOOP title to Leah's collection of tourney triumphs, as today he topped 503-entry field in Event #38, an $82 NL Single Draw event, to earn the win and a $6,707,46 first prize.
It only took just over three hours for that starting field to work its way down to just 62 players and the money bubble to burst, at which point Leah had already climbed to the top of the counts.
Less than an hour later they were down to the last two seven-handed tables, with Leah still in the mix with an average stack and and another multiple-COOP winner Alm "Chillolini" Wilson having risen to the top of the counts with a stack of nearly a million.
janinho42 (14th) was the next player eliminated, earning $386.07, followed by Dimon 2242 (13th) and sandman101 (12th) who each took away $481.11. lov10k (11th) and kacsan8698 (10th) were next out, cashing for $599.54 apiece, then PikovijBrat (ninth) and jhmos (eighth) successively fell to make $747.12.
With Wilson still the chip leader and just seven left, they'd reached what turned out to be a fairly stacked final table.
Seat 1: Kashmir_uzi (United Kingdom) -- 608,114
Seat 2: Mike "goleafsgoeh" Leah (Canada) -- 588,216
Seat 3: Alm "Chillolini" Wilson (Norway) -- 1,288,058
Seat 4: Chief0r (Austria) -- 572,563
Seat 5: Mikal "mikal12345" Blomlie (Norway) -- 753,721
Seat 6: Niklas "Lena900" Åstedt (Sweden) -- 402,687
Seat 7: MrMaximize (Mexico) -- 816,641
A few minutes into the final table the blinds were 20,000/40,000 when Mikal "mikal12345" Blomlie raised to 90,000 from the cutoff and MrMaximize called from the small blind. Then Kashmir_uzi -- winner of both a WCOOP and a SCOOP before -- shoved for 292,362 over the big blind, Blomlie repopped it, and MrMaximize minimized his loss by folding.
Kashmir_uzi then drew one card while Blomlie stood pat, Kashmir_uzi turned over Q♦9♣6♥5♠4♥ for a queen-low, but Blomlie had that beaten with J♦T♦8♣4♦2♣ for a jack-low and mama, ain't no denyin', no denyin' Kashmir_uzi had been knocked out in seventh.
A little while after that Alm "Chillolini" Wilson -- still in front (and pictured at left) -- open-raised all in from under the gun and Blomlie called all in from the cutoff for 716,612 (almost 12 big blinds).
Everyone else folded, Wilson drew one card, and Blomlie stood pat. Wilson then showed he'd made 8♥7♥5♣4♣2♥, better than Blomlie's J♥8♦7♦5♠3♠ and 1-2-3 it was mikal12345 on the rail in sixth.
Soon Mike "goleafsgoeh" Leah min-raised to 120,000 from the button, Chief0r reraise-pushed for 608,866 after posting the big blind, and Leah called. Both stood pat, and Chief0r showed T♦9♥8♦5♦4♣ for a 10-low. Alas for Chief0r, Leah had an eight with 8♥7♦6♠4♠2♦, and it was hail to the Chief0r, fifth-place finisher.
A few hands went by during which Leah pushed ahead of Wilson to claim the chip lead, then with the blinds 35,000/70,000 Leah raised to 140,000 from the button and watched Niklas "Lena900" Åstedt three-bet push for just a little more -- 201,374 including the big blind -- and Leah called.
Both players drew a single card, and Åstedt turned over J♥T♠9♥8♠2♦ hoping a jack-low would be enough. It wasn't, as Leah turned over 9♣8♣5♠3♦2♣, and with no more chip stack to lean on Lena900 fell in fourth.
It didn't take long before MrMaximize was open-raising all in for 169,368 from the button (less than two big blinds) and both Leah and Wilson called from the blinds. All three players drew one card, and after Leah showed T♠9♠6♠4♣3♣ for a 10-9 low then Wilson turned over T♥8♠7♠6♦5♠ for a better 10-8, what MrMaximize had couldn't max those hands and he mucked to go out in third.
Heads-up play swiftly began with Mike "goleafsgoeh" Leah (at right) a better than 2-to-1 leader with 3,439,088 to Alm "Chillolini" Wilson's 1,590,912. Nearly a dozen hands went by -- all relatively small ones -- after which Leah had chipped up over 4.07 million while Wilson fell back to just over 950,000.
The blinds were 60,000/120,000 when Wilson open-pushed that stack from the button and Leah called. Leah drew one card and Wilson took two, and Wilson turned over a pair of fours -- J♥8♠7♥4♠4♦ -- meaning Chillolini's luck had cooled at the finish.
Leah had that beat -- and how! -- with a "number one" as he showed 7♦5♥4♥3♦2♦. It was a "seven perfect" ending for Leah, the Event #38 champion.
