TCOOP 2017: thehushpuppy denies GeraldoCesar in Event #20, $82 NLO8 (6-Max, Hyper-Turbo)

The number of people in the world who make thousands of dollars per hour for their work is usually restricted to those who have spent years or even decades becoming educated and learning their craft. When January rolls around, a handful of No-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo players get a chance to join that elite club via a hyper-turbo TCOOP tournament. Geraldo Cesar "GeraldoCesar" Neto looked set tonight to turn this golden opportunity into victory, which would have been his second in as many years during this series. Instead, thehushpuppy turned the tables in the tournament's final minutes to earn the title - not to mention a rate of more than $5,000 per hour.

Event #20, a 6-Max, Hyper-Turbo $82 No-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo tournament, kicked off at 5:00 p.m. ET. It took exactly one hour and 45 minutes to reduce the 799-player field to just six. The first 89 players to cash earned at least a $213.32 share of the $62,401.90 prize pool, while the final table prizes ranged from just over $2,000 to a bit over $10,000.

Final table bubble finisher Kashmir_uzi missed out on not just those prizes but also a shot at a TCOOP win to go with SCOOP and WCOOP victories earned back in 2015. Kashmir_uzi settled for $1,423.34 instead, and these six players prepared to last an average of a few minutes apiece at the final table:

Seat 1: Geraldo Cesar "GeraldoCesar" Neto (3,221,083 in chips)
Seat 2: fronk_donk (1,252,878 in chips)
Seat 3: goa1908 (518,536 in chips)
Seat 4: LucasBenetti (768,882 in chips)
Seat 5: 4Kings_Hit (869,749 in chips)
Seat 6: thehushpuppy (1,358,872 in chips)

Half the table faced all-in situations within the first six minutes thanks to the 62.5K/125K/25K blinds and antes. The early pots were split, but LucasBenetti managed to double up in a desperate spot, calling all-in for just over one big blind with K♥ T♣ 7♠ 5♠ and hitting tens full of kings to beat TCOOP 2016 NL 2-7 Single Draw winner Geraldo Cesar "GeraldoCesar" Neto's A♥ 8♠ 6♠ 6♦ for 616K.

Half of that win disappeared on the next hand when the other two desperate short stacks at the table met LucasBenetti all-in before the flop. 4Kings_Hit got in with A♣ A♦ T♣ 2♦ and made the nut flush and nut low on the 3♦ 9♦ J♣ 7♦ 5♠ board, taking the three-way pot for 617K. LucasBenetti's 8♣ 7♠ 4♣ 2♣ left the Brazilian with 379K, while goa1908's K♥ 8♦ 8♠ 3♣ came up short to bounce the Greek player in sixth.

LucasBenetti managed to survive all-in situations on four of the next five hands. The fourth saw the Brazilian forced all-in for 118K in the small blind with K♠ 8♠ 8♥ 2♥, and past Sunday Million finalist 4Kings_Hit called all-in for 287K in the big blind with Q♦ 7♦ 4♣ 3♥ to face off against GeraldoCesar's A♦ 7♣ 4♥ 2♣. The T♦ J♠ 3♠ T♣ T♥ board left no possible low, giving LucasBenetti the 943K-chip pot with tens full of eights and eliminating 4Kings_Hit in fifth.

LucasBenetti's hot streak cooled off for good on the following hand. The Brazilian called all-in for 556K with A♣ T♥ 7♠ 3♠ after this year's TCOOP Event #10 runner-up, fronk_donk, opened all-in for 612K with A♦ 7♣ 5♣ 2♠. GeraldoCesar came along on the cheap with Q♥ J♥ 5♦ 2♣ and all three players had nearly identical equity heading to the 7♦ T♦ 6♦ flop. LucasBenetti made tens and sevens there to lead for the high and fronk_donk had the draw to the nut low, but GeraldoCesar would end up taking down the 2.1M-chip pot when the Q♦ turn and J♦ river made queens and jacks for the Brazilian with no possible low. LucasBenetti, owner of the shorter stack at the start of the hand, left in fourth, and fronk_donk finished third.

GeraldoCesar was now heads-up with the chip lead, holding 6.41M chips to WCOOP 2016 finalist thehushpuppy's 1.57M and looking to earn a TCOOP title for the second consecutive year. The two players agreed to skip the 6:55 p.m. ET break and thehushpuppy doubled up almost immediately after opening all-in with K♥ Q♥ Q♣ 9♦. GeraldoCesar called with A♣ J♦ 8♣ 7♥ but lost out when the 2♦ K♦ 5♠ 2♣ T♣ left no possible low, giving the 3.74M-chip pot to thehushpuppy's kings and deuces.

That brought the two players within two big blinds of each other, and thehushpuppy moved ahead for good three hands later after calling all-in from the big blind with A♣ A♥ A♦ 2♦. GeraldoCesar had raised with K♥ J♣ 5♠ 4♦ and made a pair of jacks on the 3♣ J♥ 8♣ 9♠ 7♣ board, but thehushpuppy's pair of aces and nut low earned the 6.5M-chip pot. thehushpuppy jammed on the button next hand with Q♦ 5♥ 4♦ 3♥ and GeraldoCesar called with K♥ J♠ 4♣ 3♣. thehushpuppy made a flush and an 8-5 low on the 8♦ 9♣ 3♦ T♦ A♠ board, while GeraldoCesar missed the low and made just a pair of threes, bringing his quest for a second TCOOP title to an end (for now).

GeraldoCesar might have had a near-miss with a second TCOOP title, but he did earn a consolation prize of $7,090.07 in just under two hours. Meanwhile, thehushpuppy won $10,592.44 and a first career COOP title. Congratulations to both players on a very profitable use of two hours!
