WCOOP 2010: cal42688 draws up a WCOOP bracelet win

wcoop2009-thumb.jpgEvent #17 of the 2010 World Championship of Online Poker - $215 No-Limit Single Draw 2-7 - has the smallest guaranteed prize pool at $50,000. Although 2-7 NL Lowball is a game usually played as in live high-stakes cash games and a couple of WSOP tournaments, that fact didn't stop players from trying to earn a WCOOP bracelet as 367 players created a $73,400 prize pool. The final 56 players made the money, starting with $330.30, as online tournament legend "shaundeeb" finished in 57th place to burst the bubble.

With the final table seven-handed, Tom Bayes was the final table bubble boy. With blinds at 3,000/6,000 with a 1,500 ante, Tom Bayes raised all-in for his last 29,536 in chips as
josémanuel and capoch called. Tom Bayes and capoch each drew 1 card while josémanuel drew two. After the draw, capoch bet out and josémanuel folded as capoch revealed 9♣ 8♣ 5♦ 4♥ 2♥ for a 9-low. Tom Bayes had paired a deuce, departing in 8th place, collecting $1,321.20. Here's how the final table would look with everyone seated:

Action had been folded around as iMaLiVeFiSh went all-in for 39,587 in chips as josémanuel called from the big blind. After josémanuel drew two cards, iMaLiVeFiSh decided to stand pat. However, those two cards were good as josémanuel held J♥ 9♥6♣ 5♠ 2♦ while iMaLiVeFiSh held only a queen-low, finishing in 7th for $1,835.00

cal42688, hoping to improve on an 8th place finish in WCOOP event #15 - $215 Razz on Thursday, would handle the next elimination. cal42688 opened with a raise to 13,500, with a call by josémanuel and an all-in raise by 7CardRyon for 69,666, a quick call from cal42688 as josémanuel folded. 7CardRyon drew 1 while cal42688 stood pat. When the cards were revealed cal42688's J♦ 8♣ 7♣ 5♣ 3♥ outkicked 7CardRyon's Jack-nine low, finishing 6th for $2,385.50.

The next player to depart the table and be denied a chance at a WCOOP bracelet was Analyser2, who also ran into cal42688. The blinds were now 3,500/7.000 with an ante of 1,750 when capoch opened to 17,700 with calls by RUNNER JIM, Analyser2 in the small blind, and cal42688 in the big blind. Analyser2 drew 1 card, while cal42688 drew 3 and RUNNER JIM drew 1. Analyser2 moved in for their last 62,956 in chips as cal42688 called while capoch and RUNNER JIM folded. cal42688 caught three good cards, turning over 8♥ 6♦ 4♥ 3♣2♣, with Analyser showing just a 9-6, finishing in 5th place, collecting $3,119.50 as cal42688 moved into the chip lead.

The flow of chips heading in cal42688's direction continued with the elimination of RUNNER JIM in 4th place. The blinds were now at 4,000/8,000 with a 2,000 ante when action started with a raise from josémanuel to 32,000. RUNNER JIM made a raise to 104,648 followed by a call from cal42688 as josémanuel folded. While cal42688 stood pat, RUNNER JIM drew 1 card, pairing his six, while cal42688 had 9♠8♣5♥3♣2♦, sending RUNNER JIM scurrying from the table with $4,587.50 for 4th place.

As play continued three-handed, josémanuel now held the lead, and was looking to finish off his two remaining opponents in this hand:

Both cal42688 and capoch were able to double up while josémanuel fell to just over 160,000 in chips.

A few hands later, it was another three-way confrontation, and again josémanuel would lose the rest of the chips. Play started with a raise from josémanuel to 40,000 with both
cal42688 and capoch making the call. All three players drew one, with cal42688 betting out for 32,000, capoch raising to 64,000 with josémanuel calling all-in for 61,009 as cal42688 folds. When the hands were revealed, capoch held 9♥ 7♥ 6♠5♠2♣ while josémanuel had a ten, as an additional $7,340.00 in the cashier account for the 3rd place finish as play moved to heads-up with the chip counts:

cal42688 (897639 in chips)
capoch (937361 in chips)

Both players would hold the chip lead, but this hand would turn out to be the defining moment of the tournament:

copach was able to double up to get within 200,000 chips, but cal42688 turned up the pressure, taking down several pots in a row to build up a 5-1 chip lead when the final hand took place. The blinds were now at 5,000/10,000 with a 2,500 ante. capoch made a raise to 25,000, leading cal42688 moving all-in as capoch called for their remaining 265,444 chips. Both players drew one, and cal42688 revealed 9♥7♥6♣5♠4♣, besting the holdings of capoch: T♣ 6♠ 5♥ 3♦ 2♣, The 2nd place finish gives capoch $10,643.00 to possibly use for other WCOOP events over the next week, while cal42688 picks up a WCOOP bracelet along with $15,047.00 for the victory.
