WCOOP 2010: ChipUniter charges ahead in Event #37, $320 NLHE (10-minute levels)
The 2,343 players that spent their Friday night on the virtual felt in WCOOP Event #37 got just a little more than they paid for. There was a slight overlay on the $750,000 guarantee, 306 players going home with a share of the prize pool and first place set to earn $120,000. Getting in on the action were Team PokerStars Pros Anh Van Nguyen, Juan Maceiras, Arnaud Mattern, Chris Moneymaker, Jason Mercier, Leo Fernandez, David Williams, Tae Joon Noh, Henrique Pinho, Joe Cada, Marcin Horecki, Veronica Dabul, Jose "Nacho" Barbero, Alexandre Gomes, Pat Pezzin, Julian Thew, Noah Boeken, Vanessa Rousso, and Victor Ramdin. Finishing in the money were Matthew "chipstar1" Didlick (254th), Barry Greenstein (231st), Greg Raymer (221st), Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (198th), Gualter Salles (174th), Joep van den Bijgaart (118th), Martin Hruby (83rd), and Darus Suharto (15th).
The final table bubble burst when gobuseth open-shoved for his last 104,852 and both ChipUniter and THAY3R called. The flop came down K♠4♣3♣ and both ChipUniter and THAY3R checked. When the T♣ fell on the turn ChipUniter led out for 80,000 and THAY3R called. The river was the 7♠ and ChipUniter bet another 160,000. THAY3R folded and ChipUniter revealed A♣T♦ for second pair. Gobuseth also had a pair of tens, but was in kicker trouble with J♣T♠, and hit the rail in tenth place, sending us to the final table.
Final table chip counts:
Seat 1: TIETYMM (943,235 in chips)
Seat 2: THAY3R (673,161 in chips)
Seat 3: AnthonyyKimm (660,528 in chips)
Seat 4: Kroko-dill (1,214,181 in chips)
Seat 5: RipleyCraig (444,539 in chips)
Seat 6: lent53 (2,108,858 in chips)
Seat 7: ChipUniter (4,820,338 in chips)
Seat 8: gutshotjerry (116,590 in chips)
Seat 9: bigredAK (733,570 in chips)
Only five hands in to the final table, MTT grinder Thayer "THAY3R" Rasmussen went out in ninth place. With the blinds up to 25,000/50,000, ChipUniter opened for a min-raise to 100,000 and THAY3R shoved for 641,911 from the big blind. ChipUniter made the call, turning over pocket kings while THAY3R showed A♠J♣. THAY3R did not improve on the 6♠5♥4♣3♦J♦ board and he hit the rail, collecting $6,750 for his efforts.
Although he arrived at the final table with the smallest stack, gutshotjerry doubled up twice during eight-handed play, first winning a coinflip with pocket deuces against AnthonyyKimm's ace-king, and again a short time later when his pocket fives held up against ChipUniter's K♠3♠. AnthonyyKimm was left on the short stack, and he shoved for his last 18 big blinds holding Q♠J♣, probably hoping just to pick up the blinds and antes. Unfortunately for him, TIETYMM woke up with K♥K♣ in the big blind. AnthonyyKimm could not improve on the A♠5♥3♠6♥2♥ board and exited in eighth place for a $12,750 score.
Five hands later, bigredAK went out on a nasty beat. Lent53 opened for 120,000, bigredAK shoved for 338,570 from the big blind and lent53 made the call. Although bigredAK's A♥J♠ had lent53's A♣4♣ dominated, lent53 turned an ace-high flush on the 3♠3♣J♣2♣2♥ board, ending bigredAK's run in seventh place.
Gutshotjerry had blinded down quite a bit by this point and with the blinds up to 30,000/60,000, he moved all-in from UTG+1 holding A♠T♥. Lent53 made the call with Q♥J♥. Gutshotjerry was looking good on the K♥7♠6♦ flop and the turn was a blank, the 3♣. The river, however was the Q♣, lent53 spiking a pair of queens to take down the pot and eliminate gutshotjerry in sixth place. For his efforts, gutshotjerry added $26,250 to his bankroll.
Only four minutes passed before RipleyCraig open-shoved for 753,812 from UTG and Kroko-dill made the call from the big blind. RipleyCraig's A♣T♠ did not improve against Kroko-dill's pocket jacks and he departed in fifth place, earning $33,750.
With four players remaining, ChipUniter was the dominant chip leader with 7.25 million while TIETYMM, Kroko-dill and lent53 all had stacks between one and two million. ChipUniter took his aggression into overdrive at this point, using his chip advantage to put pressure on his opponents at every turn. In one of these instances, Kroko-dill caught ChipUniter's hand in the cookie jar with quite a marginal hand and earned a double-up. Kroko-dill opened for 160,000, ChipUniter shoved from the big blind and Kroko-dill called all-in for 1.9 million, turning over pocket eights. ChipUniter was in trouble with J♥7♦, the board running out K♣4♦A♠K♦4♣ to give Kroko-dill a double-up to 4.2 million.
Lent53's stack was severely damaged after he moved all-in for 975,210 with Q♣5♣ and TIETYMM looked him up with A♣J♠. An ace hit the flop and TIETYMM doulbed to 1.59 million while lent53 was left with 252,000. Although lent53 was able to double up to 500,000 on the next hand, the rest of his chips were back in the middle a few hands later, his Q♣K♥ up against ChipUniter's A♦T♥. Lent53 got no help on the J♦7♦3♠5♣9♠ board and went out in fourth place, earning $45,000.
As the action turned three-handed, ChipUniter (7.4 million), Kroko-dill (2.6 million) and TIETYMM (1.65 million) agreed to pause the tournament and discuss a deal. Their first shot at negotiations fell apart when Kroko-dill wanted a bigger piece of the pie, and action resumed. Five hands later, Kroko-dill's chips were in the middle, his tournament life on the life against ChipUniter. Kroko-dill limped in for 50,000 in the small blind, ChipUniter raised to 250,000 from the big blind and Kroko-dill came back over the top, moving all-in for 2.68 million. ChipUniter made the call, his K♦Q♦ racing with Kroko-dill's 8♦8♣. The eights held up on the A♥T♠4♠3♥6♥ board and Kroko-dill departed in third place, collecting $65,325. With his finish tonight, Kroko-dill took over the top spot in the WCOOP Player of the Series race, leading Anders "Donald" Berg by 60 points.
ChipUniter had a nearly 6.5-1 chip lead over TIETYMM when heads-up play commenced:
Seat 1: TIETYMM (1,582,768 in chips)
Seat 7: ChipUniter (10,132,232 in chips)
TIETYMM wanted to pause and discuss a deal right away but with the advantage he already had over his opponent, ChipHunter naturally wanted to play it out. Those words were barely out of ChipUniter's mouth when TIETYMM called his open-shove, turning over Q♠J♦. ChipUniter had the best of it pre-flop with K♠3♦, but TIETYMM rivered a Broadway straight on the T♠8♣2♦A♠K♥ board to double up to 3.1 million.
After that hand, TIETYMM started quickly turning things around. Soon thereafter, he picked off a triple-barrel bluff from ChipUniter, taking down a 2.3 million pot.
Five minutes later, they clashed in another huge pot, TIETYMM opening for a min-raise to 240,000 and ChipUniter making the call. ChipUniter checked the Q♥6♦3♣ flop over to TIETYMM, who bet 280,000. ChipUniter raised to 800,000 and TIETYMM called. The turn was the 5♠ and ChipUniter led out for 1.35 million. TIETYMM moved all-in for 3.25 million and ChipUniter made the call, turning over Q♦8♣ for top pair. TIETYMM, however, had turned two pair with Q♣5♣. The river was the 4♥ and TIETYMM raked in the 8.6 million pot, leading ChipUniter on 3.1 million.
Right after that hand, ChipUniter and TIETYMM agreed to pause the action and run the chip count chop numbers again. After TIETYMM agreed to give up an additional $1,500 in prize money to ChipUniter, they agreed to a deal, leaving $15,000 on the table for the winner. The remainder of their heads-up battle lasted another thirty minutes. ChipUniter retook the lead when his A♥7♦ flopped an ace against TIETYMM's pocket nines only to lose it a few minutes later in this hand, where he couldn't call TIETYMM's river shove.
ChipUniter had worked his stack back up to 6.9 million when the final hand unfolded. With the blinds at 100,000/200,000, ChipUniter opened for 500,000. TIETYMM moved all-in for 4.75 million and ChipUniter called. It was another race situation, TIETYMM's Q♠T♥ up against ChipUniter's 8♣8♠. The eights held, the board running out 5♠4♥3♣3♦2♠ to lock up the win for ChipUniter.
Congratulations to ChipUniter on his first WCOOP title and a $110,614.08 payday. For his runner-up finish, TIETYMM earned $99,385.92.
