WCOOP 2010: Richard "CHUFTY" Ashby takes Event #54 PLO bracelet
A well rested six-pack of players are ready to do battle for today's Event #54 PLO 6-max $2,100 buy-in WCOOP bracelet. Well maybe a couple of well rested players after seeing some of them were logged on for most of the night and hopefully have timed their energy drink/coffee consumption correctly so they do not befall the same fate as some tired scribes may have during the past three weeks. If you need to catch up on the action to this point check out yesterday's recap of day one here. Day one was headed by Richard "CHUFTY" Ashby aggressive play as he manned the top of the leaderboard for most of the 13 hours of play yesterday. But, today he will start on the third position behind Shatkhi who brings 1.3 million chips to the table and VIP Supernova Gorrioncillo in second holding 701K chips with the blinds starting off at 12.5K/25K.
As a quick reminder here's how we ended up from yesterday stopping play at the final table after 474 players were sent home:
Chip counts for the start of Day Two:
Richard "CHUFTY" Ashby 605,740
< x|||||>< 274,025
As Team Online Thomas "Boku87" Boekhoff mentioned while welcoming our players back to the table, our final six will walk away with no less than $32,640.00 today. Ashby would start out quickly by snagging a 661K pot off Gorrioncillo in the final table's very first hand after finding his kings 8♦ K♠ K♣ 6♥ good after a board of 4♥ J♣ 8♠ 4♠ A♥ and Gorrioncillo mucked. Gorrioncillo's luck would not improve, finding himself quickly on the short stack as the blinds moved up to 30K/60K after doubling up shinbunshi and losing another 116,666 chip hand immediately after.
Kicked in the shin
Gorrioncillo would later take those chips back from shinbunshi who had Gorrioncillo dominated with Q♠ 5♠ A♠ 7♣ versus Gorrioncillo's Q♦ J♠ 5♣ 7♥ but a jack on the flop left shinbunshi back in sixth place with just over three big blinds. Three hands later we had a huge three-way all-in with shinbunshi and Gorrioncillo all-in preflop versus Shatkhi who covered both of them. Watch the results below:
Gorrioncillo 3♠ A♠ A♣ 2♣
Shatkhi 9♣ K♠ Q♥ K♦
shinbunshi A♥ 6♠ 8♥ T♠
No one could catch Gorrioncillo's aces on the J♦ 8♦ 7♠ 4♣ Q♠ as he scooped the 795,702 chip pot and took out shinbunshi in sixth place ($32,640.00).
After losing a sizable 1.2 million chip pot to CHUFTY, < xllllll>< was left with just 162,988 chips as the blinds moved up to 20K/40K and in need to make a move. < xllllll>< would double up once but still short with 325,976 chips as five hands after losing the majority of his stack he three-bet Shatkhi all-in holding T♦ K♦ 6♦ K♥. Shatkhi would make the call with a suited ace 4♦ J♥ A♦ 9♠ and found a gutshot draw on the 3♥ Q♥ 8♠ flop. 2♠ improved it to a double-gutter but neither a five nor ten was necessary as the A♣ on the river gave Shatkhi the higher pair eliminating < xllllll>< in fifth place ($50,880.00).
Shatkhi hacks another one down
Four hands later Shatkhi and Gorrioncillo would take their battle preflop as both players set their chips in with the blinds still at 20K/40K combining for a 996,186 chips pot. Double suited jacks A♠ J♣ J♠ 3♣ Shatkhi as Gorrioncillo showed an O8 hand but double suited as well A♥ 5♦ 7♦ 2♥. The Q♥ 7♠ 4♥ flop gave Gorrioncillo a heart draw along with a pair, but failed to overcome Shatkhi's jacks as the 4♣ and K♣ dropped on the turn and river giving Shatkhi another elimination and finishing Gorrioncillo's day in fourth place ($71,040.00).
Turkey for Shatkhi
In bowling as many may know, if you score a strike three times in a row it is called a turkey. As today's final table goes, Shatkhi score a turkey in striking out three players in a row. In the mist of winning five consecutive pots, Shatkhi would call the three-bet 481,464 chip shove LukeFromB13 holding T♣ K♣ 8♠ A♥. LukeFromB13 was looking good for a double-up rolling over suited aces 5♦ A♠ 6♦ A♦. Looks do not win the pot as Shatkhi would immediately flop top two pair T♦ 5♥ K♥ and had it hold thru the J♠ turn and 6♥ river to send the last three players to the rail and claim the one million chip pot. This was certainly not LukeFromB13's first time at a major final table here at PokerStars as he can claim a final table in both the Sunday Warm-up earning $11,737.50 in eighth place and bubbling the Sunday Million for $8,464.78. Today he eclipsed both those deep runs with a third place finish and a six figure payday ($103,200.00).
The chalk makes it to heads-up
The odds on favorites both would start up heads-up play a mere 45 minutes after starting up the final table. Richard "CHUFTY" Ashby was looking to affirm his PLO specialty with a win held 1.3 million chips as Shatkhi would start with the lead holding 2.2 million and blinds at 20K/40K.
Dodging boots activated
After taking down a 1.6 million chip pot and the blinds moving up to 25K/50K Shatkhi would have Ashby all-in post-flop Q♥ 6♦ 5♣ with CHUFTY holding two pair Q♦ 5♥ A♦ 8♣ versus his wrap straight draw 5♦ 8♠ 7♠ 9♣. A spade on the turn 2♠ was a blank as the queen on the river Q♠ gave Ashby new life with the 1.2 million chip pot for his queens full. Ashby would turn up the heat by winning the next five pots in a row and briefly took over the chip lead.
Table tilts quickly in CHUFTY's direction
With the blinds moving up to 30K/60K, Ashby would catch a little luck, all-in preflop while down 850K to 2.7 million. Holding a dominated A♦ 2♦ K♠ 8♦ to Shatkhi's double suited A♠ 8♣ 8♠ K♣, the flop was as perfect as possible for CHUFTY as he would flop the nut flush J♦ 7♦ 6♦ K♥ 4♠ and win the 1.7 million chip pot nearly evening the match.
Ashby would win the next two pots taking the chip lead (2.2 million to 1.3 million) into the tournament's final hand shown below:
Shatkhi would raise from the button to 140K as CHUFTY came back with a re-raise to 420K as Shatkhi flat called to see the Q♣ 3♣ A♥ flop. Ashby would lead out for 240K as Shatkhi pushed the rest of his 967,484 chip stack in holding K♦ A♦ 6♣ 4♥. A snap call by CHUFTY holding top set 6♦ A♠ 8♠ A♣ leaving Shatkhi drawing to a runner-runner straight. 9♠ shipped the bracelet and the $185,760.00 first prize to Richard "CHUFTY" Ashby as the T♠ fell on the river for formality reasons.
