WCOOP 2011: iwonthurtyou brings the pain in Event #35 $215 NLHE w/ rebuys

A large field ready to gamble assured a six-figure payday for our champion in the 35th event of the 2011 World Championship of Online Poker, a $215 No-Limit Hold'em tournament with rebuys.

The final table was marked by montjeu8 dominating the action up until heads up play, when roles reversed and a surprise champion emerged in iwonthurtyou.

The Friday event drew 1,254 of PokerStars' best, and these players made 1,265 rebuys and 869 add-ons to create a whopping $749,600 prize pool and first place prize of $127,432. That $550,000 guarantee was easily lapped.

Team PokerStars Pros who tried and failed to make the 162-player money-line cut included Johnny Lodden, Noah "Exclusive" Boeken, Vanessa "LadyMaverick" Rousso, Toni Judet and Humberto Brenes. Members of PokerStars Team Online who participated included Diego "vgreen22" Brunelli, Shane "shaniac" Schleger and Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen.

Three members of Team Online made the money, including Anders "Donald" Hoyer Berg in 93rd place ($1,574.16) and Andrew "foucault82" Brokos in 89th place ($1,649.12).Andre "acoimbra" Brito ranked among the top players in the chip count as we closed in on the last few tables before exiting in 28th place ($2,623.60).

Play slowed to a crawl once two tables remained. Montjeu8 made a big move when the Lebanese player knocked out I_M_ICM with A♦ Q♥ vs. 7♦ 7♠ when the players got all in preflop and montjeu8 made a straight. This hand eliminated I_M_ICM in 12th and gave montjeu8 more than 2.9 million chips, or more than 1 million more than any other player.

Borvik exited in 11th when he pushed his last half million in with A♦ 7♣ from the small blind, but ran into iwonthurtyou's K♠ K♥ in the big blind.

Montjeu8 increased his lead when he got Dan "djk123" Kelly to commit his stack on a check raise with Q♥ T♣ on a flop of 4♦ Q♣ J♣, but montjeu8 held K♠ K♦, which held after the turn and river came 2♥ A♣. Entering the final table, montjeu8 had built a massive lead.

Final table seating arrangements:
Seat 1 -- WhatIsICM (1,574,513)
Seat 2 -- joaoMathias (1,346,035)
Seat 3 -- TiltStarter (300,668)
Seat 4 -- montjeu8 (3,958,008)
Seat 5 -- p3rc4 (1,532,115)
Seat 6 -- Havana85 (584,376)
Seat 7 -- iwonthurtyou (1,594,581)
Seat 8 -- Soccermom96 (726,947)
Seat 9 -- gabixuela (1,364,757)

The hits kept coming for montjeu8. With blinds at 15K/30K, montjeu8 raised from the hijack position to 75K and Havana85 pushed all in for about 420K from the button. It was a race of 5♣ 5♦ for Havana85 against the A♥ J♥ held by montjeu8. The flop of J♠ Q♥ 3♥ left Havana85 drawing for one out, the 5♠, but it didn't come and the German departed in ninth with $8,095.68.

After WhatIsICM doubled up TiltStarter with AT vs. AK, Soccermom96 played a form of "gotcha" on this hand that crippled the player with Paris Hilton as an avatar.

None other than montjeu8 eliminated WhatIsICM two hands later with Q♣ K♠ vs. Q♠ 7♥. The Russian earned $14,617.20.

We had another player fall only two hands later. Soccermom96 made it 78,750 from middle position, and gabixuela re-raised all in for 461K just to her left. Soccermom96 made the call and we had a race with her A♦ K♥ vs. the 5♦ 5♥ of gabixuela. The board of 8♠ T♦ 6♥ 3♠ 7♦ ended gabixuela's day in seventh place, which garnered $22,113.20.

P3rc4 was crippled on a hand in which the Norwegian raised to 70K from under the gun and montjeu8 called in the big blind. After a flop of 7♥ 4♥ 4♣ both players checked. Montjeu8 checked the turn A♦, p3rc4 bet 85K, montjeu check raised to 175K and p3rc4 made the call. On the river 9♠, montjeu8 led for the pot, which was about 533K and p3rc4 tanked for about a minute. After he made the call montjeu8 revealed 5♣ 4♦ and p3rc4 mucked. The Norwegian was knocked out two hands later by the other dragon slayer at the table--Soccermom96--with AT vs. A5. For sixth, p3rc4 got $29,609.20.

The two heavyweights tangled in the next big pot, and this time Soccermom96 had her aces cracked. While Soccermom96 was set up nicely for a chance at the six figure score, this player from Malta had her day end earlier than expected in fifth place:

That sequence saw Soccermom96 collect $37,105.20 and gave montjeu8 a ridiculous advantage--holding a stack of about 9.5 million against three other players whose chips totaled about 3 million.

Unsurprisingly, montjeu8 used that stack like a playground bully who pulls the ears of the other kids and performs "atomic wedgies." The Lebanese player pushed those chips around, raising and re-raising the others to put them to the test.

It was TiltStarter, however, that claimed the next victim. After joaoMathias raised all in for 477K from the button, TiltStarter pushed over the top for 965K in the small blind.

The hands:
joaoMathias Q♣ T♦
TiltStarter K♠ Q♦

The board ran out 5♥ 7♥ 3♣ 9♣ 7♣ and joaoMathias earned $50,972.80 for fourth.

TiltStarter's success was short lived. Seven hands later the Russian put iwonthurtyou all in preflop with J♦ J♣, but iwonthurtyou hurt him with K♠ K♦. This crippled TiltStarter, who was shortly eliminated and set up the uneven (to the tune of about 11 million to 2 million) heads-up battle between montjeu8 and iwonthurtyou.

After doubling early in the match with AJ vs. AK, iwonthurtyou claimed the chip lead after this hand:

After plenty of raise-and-take-it plays, iwonthurtyou had montjeu8 down to just more than 2 million after about a half hour of heads up play, but montjeu8 doubled up. After montjeu8 made it 120K on the button with blinds at 30K/60K, iwonthurtyou made it 304K and montjeu8 pushed for 2.23 million. Iwonthurtyou called with A♦ 9♠ and was about a 3-to-1 favorite against A♥ 5♥, but the board came 8♦ K♥ T♥ 9♥ 4♦ to give montjeu8 the flush and double up.

The breathing room was short lived though. A few hands later, playing 40K/80K blinds, iwonthurtyou raised to 160K from the button and montjeu8 called. After a flop of 4♠ K♥ 5♦. montjeu8 check called a 170K bet by iwonthurtyou. The story was similar on the 8♥ turn, as montjeu8 check called a 510K bet. The fireworks went off on the 8♠ river as montjeu8 checked, iwonthurtyou bet 1,275 million, montjeu8 check raised to 2.55 million and iwonthurtyou put montjeu8 in for his last 600K.

Montjeu8 called with slow played pocket rockets A♠ A♣, while iwonthurtyou hit the straight with 6♠ 7♣. After nearly 15 hours of play, iwonthurtyou was crowned champion and received the winner's bracelet and prize of $127,432. The $93,700 certainly proved a decent consolation prize for montjeu8.
