WCOOP 2012: babyjess28 rides to victory in Event #62 ($2,100 HORSE)

Logo - WCOOP.pngMixed games are considered a true test of a poker player's ability. To excel in not just one, but five different poker variants, and survive a long and gruelling battle against the best in the world, is one of the most respected achievements in the poker world. Tonight it is Canadian babyjess28 who has earned not only a WCOOP title, but the respect of his peers with a memorable victory in Event #62 of the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker.

165 of the world's finest mixed game players came together for the $2,100 HORSE event, with the advertised guarantee easily broken as a prize pool of $330,000 was up for grabs.

David Williams, Jason Mercier, Ana Marquez, Daniel Negreanu, George Danzer, Jose Barbero, Anders Berg, George Lind, Eugene Katchalov, Bertrand Grospellier, Rino Mathis, Mickey Petersen, and the newest addition to PokerStars Team Online, Japan's first WSOP bracelet winner, Naoya 'nkeyno' Kihara, were all among today's starters but only one member of Team PokerStars made it to the money.

Chad Brown once again proved himself as one of the finest mixed game players in the world with another impressive run in today's event.

It took nine hours of play before the bubble burst when gipsy74's kings and nines fell to the nut flush of joiso during a round of Stud. It left the remaining 24 players with a guaranteed $4,125 collect, and Brown was well-placed as one of the top ten chip stacks.

With two tables left Brown had moved into the top five and was set to make a run at another WCOOP final table. Unfortunately a string of hands went against Brown during an orbit of Omaha Hi-Lo as chopi7's double-suited aces saw Brown to the rail in 13th place for $5,775 in prize money.

After over 12 hours of horsing around, alex987's battle with a short stack came to an end in 9th place during Stud Hi-Lo, making just a pair of jacks against the full house of chopi7. That elimination saw the final table set as follows:

Final table line up
Seat 1: chopi7 (299,717 in chips)
Seat 2: joiso (186,232 in chips)
Seat 3: NoraFlum (41,248 in chips)
Seat 4: babyjess28 (309,255 in chips)
Seat 5: paulgees81 (385,537 in chips)
Seat 6: muchbetter (101,892 in chips)
Seat 7: PICKLED EGG (249,805 in chips)
Seat 8: TIETYMM (76,314 in chips)

Perhaps a little sleep-deprived, the players commented that they wished for this event to be a two-day event like previously, knowing they were still a long way from crowning a champion. But they didn't have to wait long for the first elimination as the short-stacked NoraFlum fell during the round of Stud Hi-Lo. NoraFlum, who had won a WCOOP HORSE event earlier in this series, was all in on fourth with a board that ran out 5♣A♠3♦3♣Q♥2♣T♦ for just a pair of threes. babyjess28 opened 6♥Q♠6♠A♣9♦3♥J♣ for just a pair of sixes with no low, but it was enough to end NoraFlum's tournament in 8th place for $9,075.

Back onto Limit Holdem and TIETYMM lost a massive pot after running into the quads of chopi7, and was all in next hand holding Q♠Q♣.

There were two callers with chopi7 putting in a river bet on the board of 3♣4♦8♥6♦7♥ to force a fold from joiso. It wasn't a great board for TIETYMM's queens as they hit the muck when chopi7 showed 3♥5♦ for a rivered straight. TIETYMM took home $11,550 for 7th place.

With the game moving to Omaha Hi-Lo, muchbetter was all in on the turn on a board of 2♠Q♠8♣6♥. With two callers, the action was checked on the 2♣ river. paulgees81 showed 5♠T♥8♠9♥ for eights and deuces to take the high, muchbetter opened 7♥4♣9♠A♠ for an eight-four low but it was pipped by the eight-three low of PICKLED EGG who held 3♣4♠T♦A♦. muchbetter was left empty-handed on the table, but added $14,850 to the bankroll for 6th place.

The Razz round didn't produce too much excitement and it wasn't until the first hand of Stud that we saw our next elimination.

Bill "PICKLED EGG" Gazes was one of the WCOOP pioneers after finishing 4th on the 2005 WCOOP Main Event final table, but Gazes wouldn't pick up a WCOOP title today. PICKLED EGG was all in on third street, but his board of T♣J♥K♥8♣9♥2♣6♠ could only produce king-high as paulgees81 managed the only pair with 3♠3♦J♦8♠6♦Q♣A♣. PICKLED EGG collected $18,150 for 5th place.

chopi7 landed a double up in Stud, with a pair of fours enough to collect the pot against paulgees81's pair of deuces, as paulgees81 continued to slide, losing two substantial pots to babyjess28 to be back on the short stack.

The roller coaster continued for chopi7 in Stud, after running into joiso's flush, before doubling up again next hand making a pair of fours against joiso's ace-high.

chopi7 said, "dfhbfyn gfcf vjtuj yt vfk gj'njve jy ljk;ty gb[fnm b gevnjq"
chopi7 said, "wow"

As the game switched to Stud Hi-Lo, chopi7's frustrations were finally brought to an end. With three players calling bets on third and fourth streets, chopi7 raised all in on fifth street. Both babyjess28 and joiso called, and the action got heavier through sixth and seventh streets into the side pot. With no players able to make a low, babyjess28 was the only one to show as K♣K♥A♣T♣8♥K♦4♥ for trip kings was good to scoop the lot. chopi7 picked up $28,050 for 4th place.

babyjess28 now held a massive chip lead, but the Stud Hi-Lo round would claim another victim as the short-stacked paulgees81 would fall soon after.

paulgees81 completed on third, before joiso raised on fourth. paulgees81 came back with a raise on fifth, led the betting on sixth before being all in by the river. joiso called as paulgees81 opened 2♦7♠A♥3♣Q♦A♠8♥ for a pair of aces and eight-seven low, but joiso showed 3♦7♦5♣6♣J♠9♦4♣ for a rivered straight and seven-low to scoop. paulgees81 won a Sunday Million in early 2011, but was unable to add a WCOOP title to that resume today as 3rd place was worth $39,600.

Heads-up chip counts
Seat 2: joiso (555,673 in chips)
Seat 4: babyjess28 (1,094,327 in chips)

The heads-up battle was an interesting one with well-known pro Alexander "joiso" Kostritsyn and babyjess28 who has been rumoured to be Greg Mueller.

The first hand set the tone for the contest as babyjess28 made a wheel to scoop to maintain the advantage. From there, babyjess28 was able to win the majority of pots to wear down the stack of joiso.

The final hand was dealt during Stud Hi-Lo. joiso completed and led the betting on fourth and fifth streets. babyjess28 raised on fifth and joiso called before leading out again with a bet on sixth. babyjess28 raised again and joiso called off his last chips, but could only table J♣A♠6♠8♣T♥6♦5♦ for a pair of sixes at showdown. It wasn't enough as babyjess28 found 3♦9♠4♦9♣6♥4♥4♠ for a full house to grab an emphatic victory!

joiso picked up $51,150 for second place as babyjess28 wins the WCOOP bracelet and $71,775 in prize money. Congratulations!
