WCOOP 2013: phaplap prevails in Event #37 ($215+R NLHE), ElkY eighth

On the live circuit, we call them "Tables of Death." Lineups that earn the moniker are littered with so many legends and bracelet winners it flirts with the absurd. And if there ever was a WCOOP incarnation of the Table of Death, the final table of Event #37 would make the short list. Of the nine final table players, two-thirds of them had made a six-figure score in a major tournament on PokerStars. Mendezoo won the Super Tuesday last October. Phaplap shipped the Sunday Warm-Up this April. Zcedrick took fifth place in the 2013 SCOOP $10k Main Event for over $313,000, and Syndrome1977 did the same in the Fifth Anniversary Sunday Million, banking nearly $800,000. Team Pro alumni Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth scored close to a million dollars when he won the 2009 SCOOP Main Event and current Team Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier has a WCOOP bracelet for each wrist, plus a SCOOP watch. It's enough to make even a grizzled Supernova shudder. After a three-hour stint in this murderer's row, Turkey's phaplap emerged the victor, pairing his Sunday Warm-Up title with a WCOOP win.

Event #37 drew 1,557 players, their 1,380 rebuys and 1,094 add-ons pushing the prizepool up to $806,200. 198 places were paid with first places set to earn $135,038.50. Among the 16 Red Spades in the field were Lex Veldhuis, Nacho Barbero, Vanessa Rousso, Alex Kravchenko and Shane "shaniac" Schleger. Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen made the money, but went out in 65th place when his pocket sixes ran into pocket jacks. That left ElkY as the last Team Pro standing, and he rode his big stack all the way to the final table.

Blinds were 15,000/30,000 with ten players remaining and capeta333 was the short stack. With the action folded around to him on the button, capeta333 moved in for his last 334,000 with 8♥T♥. Zcedrick called from the small blind and revealed A♣9♠. Capeta333 did not improve, and went out on the final table bubble, the board running out K♦J♦5♥6♠6♣.

Seat 9: j.thaddeus (435,625 in chips)

Deill out in ninth, mendezoo falls and rises

Deill spent only 15 minutes at this final table before he three-bet shoved for 914,000 with A♣T♥ in the small blind. Phaplap called with T♠T♣ and his pair held up on the seven-high board. Deill was eliminated in ninth place, collecting $8,303.86.

Although mendezoo shed more than half his stack in the opening level of the final table, he caught a lucky break on the very next deal. In a world of hurt after five-bet shoving K♦J♦ into cRkRaideRzR's A♣J♥, mendezoo turned a king and doubled to 2.77 million. J. Thaddeus also made a crucial early double-up, his pocket fives holding against ElkY's A♣J♠. J.thaddeus moved up to 1.03 million while ElkY slipped to 857,000.

ElkY eliminated in eighth place

ElkY's stack took another hit just as the blinds rose to 20,000/40,000. ElkY opened for a min-raise to 80,000 and Syndrome1977 shoved or 282,000 on the button. ElkY called, his A♦9♣ in dire shape against Syndrome1977's A♥A♠. The aces held and Syndrome1977 doubled to 664,000 while ElkY fell to 386,000.

ElkY got a bit of spring back in his step when he won a flip against cRkRaideRzR, his A♣T♥ flopping an ace to outrun pocket sixes. ElkY doubled up, but committed the rest of his stack only a few orbits later. After his A♣T♥ made top pair, ElkY slyly checked back the T♣8♦7♦ flop and smooth-called mendezoo's 120,000 bet when the turn came the 2♦. Mendezoo check-raised all-in on the K♥ river and ElkY called, no doubt dismayed to see mendezoo's set of eights. ElkY hit the rail in eighth place, earning $15,317.80 for his day's work.

Eighth place for ElkY

Syndrome1977 takes seventh

Back down to 345,000 in chips, Syndrome1977 picked up A♠A♣ again and watched the action fold around to phaplap in the small blind. Phaplap shoved with 4♦7♦ and Syndrome1977 snap-called. Although phaplap hit a seven on the flop, Syndrome1977's aces held and he doubled to 722,000. Syndrome1977, however, couldn't make it two in a row, the last of his chips pushed toward zcedrick when his 9♠9♣ held up against A♥K♦. For seventh place, Syndrome1977 picked up $23,379.80.

Fellini's fall

Fellini33 brought the chip lead to the final table, but struggled to gain traction. Zcedrick dealt him his first setback, calling Fellini33's triple-barrel bluff on a Q♣6♦2♣4♦6♥ board with pocket threes. From there, Fellini33 steadily shed chips, dropping from 4.7 million to 2.5 million before cRkRaideRzR snagged half his remaining stack with a turn shove. Fellini33 used most of his time bank before deciding to fold:

Down to 1.5 million, Fellini33 picked up A♠J♠ and opened for a UTG min-raise to 120,000. Both phaplap and zcedrick called from the blinds. All three players checked the K♣J♦5♣ flop, but when the turn came the 5♦, phaplap led out for 208,765. Zcedrick folded and Fellini33 called. Phaplap shoved the T♠ river and Fellini33 called, his jacks and fives falling to phaplap's K♦Q♠. For his sixth-place finish, Fellini33 collected $31,441.80.

mendezoo wins 11m flip

After four-bet shoving with A♣J♣ and running straight into zcedrick's J♥J♠, cRkRaideRzR hit a miracle ace on the flop to double to 4.03 million. Meanwhile, former short stack j.thaddeus had also chipped up nicely, doubling to 2 million when his A♦J♣ held up against mendezoo's K♦Q♣. Soon after, j.thaddeus check-raised a K♦K♠7♦ flop, checked th e9♦ turn, then shoved for 1.67 million when the A♠ came on the river. Phaplap folded and j.thaddeus moved up to 4.2 million.

However, that was small potatoes compared to the 11 million flip between mendezoo and zcedrick. All the money went in on a T♥8♣7♥ flop, mendezoo with a set of sevens and zcedrick with A♥J♥ for the nut flush draw. Zcedrick didn't get another heart, the turn and river falling the J♠ and the Q♠ to leave him on only 621,000 in chips. Zcedrick doubled up on the next hand, his A♦9♦ holding against j.thaddeus's A♣8♥, but was on the rail only a few minutes later. Another flip was zcedrick's undoing, his 7♠7♥ outflopped by phaplap's A♦T♦. For fifth place, zcedrick picked up $39,503.80.

phaplap surges, cRkRaideRzR cut down

Another monster pot unfolded on the very next deal, phaplap opening for 206,999 and mendezoo three-betting to 480,755. Mendezoo led out for 400,000 on the J♠7♦6♣ flop and fired again for 888,755 when the 2♠ came on the turn. Phaplap shoved for 3.8 million and mendezoo called with A♠4♠-- a naked flush draw with one to come. Phaplap revealed top pair with A♦J♥ and survived the river, the K♣ falling to give him the 9.5 million pot.

Our foursome became a trio when j.thaddeus made a button shove for 2.4 million and cRkRaideRzR called all-in from the big blind. J.thaddeus's pocket fives hung on against K♥Q♥ and cRkRaideRzR was out in fourth, banking $54,821.60.

Chop it three ways

Two hands after cRkRaideRzR's elimination, the final three agreed to pause the action and discuss a potential deal. Here's a look at how they stacked up:

phaplap 10,836,689
mendezoo 7,515,700
j.thaddeus 4,537,611

All three quickly agreed to an ICM chop that guaranteed $105,946.52 to phaplap, $99,589.62 to mendezoo, and $90,835.36 to j.thaddeus. With $12,000 still left to play for, cards went back in the air.

j.thaddeus eliminated in third

J.thaddeus soon took a hit. Phaplap's pocket deuces flopped a full house and j.thaddeus paid him off on every street in the 5.8 million pot. Down to 3.15 million, j.thaddeus found A♣9♠ and called mendezoo's four-bet shove. Mendezoo was behind with K♣Q♥ but made top pair on the Q♦8♣3♦ flop. J.thaddeus did not improve and went out in third place with a $90,835.36 payday thanks to the deal.

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 2: phaplap (10,479,541 in chips)
Seat 8: mendezoo (12,410,459 in chips)

Phaplap and mendezoo traded the chip lead several times before phaplap won four seven-figure pots in a row to build a 13 million to 10 million lead. However, mendezoo quickly closed the gap. With only a million in chips separating them, mendezoo opened for a min-raise. Phaplap three-bet, and seconds later, 21.8 million was in the pot, mendezoo's 6♣6♠ trailing phaplap's A♦A♠. Mendezo gave phaplap pause when he four-flushed on the turn, but the river blanked out, sealing phaplap's WCOOP win.

Congratulations to phaplap on bringing a WCOOP bracelet home to Turkey. He banked $117,946.52 for the win while runner-up mendezoo earned $99,589.62.
