WCOOP 2014: Championship off to great start with (some) predictable results

In what can only be described as enormously convenient, the opening day's results in the 2014 World Championship of Online Poker demonstrated just how potent the Russian poker community is right now.

Last week we focused on some of the talent coming out of Russia, among them MAMOHT_T, who yesterday finished second in Event #5, a six-max shoot-out, collecting $50.428.62 in the process.

We would happily have engaged "smug mode" were it not for the fact that MAMOHT_T is just one of a vast number of Russian players likely to do well during the Championship, not least Creatiff111 who proved just that earlier in the day, winning the bracelet in Event #4, a pot-limit Omaha six-max contest.

Elsewhere there were some good results for the ranks of Team PokerStars Pro and Team Online.

Best of the bunch in the opening events was Christophe De Meulder, who finished in 13th place in Event #4. It seems the Belgian's pre-season plan is beginning to pay dividends. Naoya "Nkeyno" Kihara, who would also cash in Event #1, got as far as 88th place in the same event.

Three more red spades would appear in the top 100 of Event #3 (won by Ryan "gutshtallin" Welch). While Marc-Andre Ladouceur reached 83rd place, Chris Moneymaker climbed a little higher, busting in 65th place. But it was Grzegorz "DaWarsaw" Mikielewicz who finished best, reaching 22nd place to collect $4,653.60.

Last but not least Jonathan Duhamel clocked up two cashes in the opening two days, the best of which was 45th place in Event #6, worth $3,266.64. He also reached 138th place in Event #5.
