WCOOP 2015: Popiedejopie ships second COOP; overcomes tough final table to win Event #49 ($530 NL Optional Re-Entry)

Talk about a difficult final table. WCOOP Event #49 featured a couple of high-stakes grinders including Grayson "gray31" Ramage, a pair of Sunday Million winners, and a handful of players who narrowly missed a previous COOP title. It got down to heads-up between Clarkson7 and Erik "Popiedejopie" van den Berg, who has proven end-game skills with victories at the Sunday Million and TCOOP. The two swapped the lead numerous times in an hour-long slug out. Although both players had an opportunity to knock the other out during the initial stages of heads-up, both failed to connect on a knockout blow. When Clarkson7 started to gain some momentum Popiedejopie launched a successful counter strike to regain the lead in a clutch hand with a straight over straight. Popiedejopie did not waste a second opportunity to knock out Clarkson7.

Erik "Popiedejopie" van den Berg became the newest WCOOP champion to add to his collection that also includes a TCOOP and Sunday Million. Popiedejopie is now only a SCOOP win away from securing a Triple COOP and Stars Grand Slam.

2015 WCOOP Event #49 $530 NL Hold'em (Optional Re-Entry) attracted 1,377 total entrants with 1,129 original entries and 248 re-entries. The prize pool ballooned to $688,500.00. Only the top 153 places paid out with $118,835.10 set aside to the champion.

Day 1 ended with only 31 players alive and Saks30 (Lebanon) in the lead with 517K.

WCOOP Event #49 - End Day 1 Chip Counts - Top 5:
1. saks80 (Lebanon) 517,726
2. pabritz (Brazil) 493,050
3. KuuL (Russia) 455,125
4. Clarkson7 (United Kingdom) 386,030
5. VirtualAA (Germany) 380,019

Day 2's action began with a swift bang and did not let up for the first level. With 13 remaining, Wicked617 seized the lead with 1.1M.

With 10 to go and action hand-for-hand, KuuL and Wicked617 battled for the lead. Short-stacked blueskyyM tried to double up with K♣T♥, but lost to gray31's A♠6♠. With blueskyyM's bust out in tenth place, the final table was set.

WCOOP Event #49 - Final Table Chip Counts:
Seat 1: KuuL (888,360)
Seat 2: HC_68 (1,084,857)
Seat 3: Clarkson7 (1,225,301)
Seat 4: pabritz (326,985)

Seat 6: gray31 (542,764)
Seat 7: WICKED617 (958,547)
Seat 8: Popiedejopie (936,113)
Seat 9: holy h3ll (601,390)

The final table commenced during Level 34 with blinds at 10K/20K and a 2.5K ante. Clarkson7 held the lead with 1.2M, while mandza17 (320K) and pabritz (326K) battled for the short stacks.

Probably the player with the most pedigree at the final table was Grayson "gray31" Ramage, with almost 4M career earnings on PokerStars. Last year, Grayson won the WCOOP Challenge Main Event for a $502K score. The final table featured the rare feat of two players who won a Sunday Million: Erik "Popiedejopie" van den Berg won a Sunday Million in 2013 and won a TCOOP in 2014, whereas holy h3ll also won a Sunday Million earlier this year. High-stakes player KuuL, was a runner-up in a 2014 SCOOP and seeking a first COOP title. Clarkson7 was a runner-up in a TCOOP event earlier in 2015. Also of note, pabritz once binked a MicroMillions event in 2012. Earlier this WCOOP, mandza17 finished second in Event #13.

HURRICANE: pabritz eliminated in 9th place

Sad tale: short stack attempts to double up but runs into pocket Aces. Popiedejopie opened to 53,750 and pabritz called from the big blind. The flop was Q♦8♥5♥... pabritz checked, Popiedejopie moved all-in for 657,363, and pabritz called all-in for 238,235.

pabritz: Q♠4♠
Popiedejopie: A♠A♣

Popiedejopie was ahead with Aces against pabritz's top pair. The turn was the 5♣ and the river was the 4♥. Popiedejopie's Aces held up. Brazil's pabritz was knocked out in ninth place, which paid out $7,573.50.

MOZAMBIQUE: KuuL eliminated in 8th place

Another sad tale: running Jacks into Kings. Popiedejopie opened to 54,325, KuuL bumped it up to 135,000, Popiedejopie shoved for 930,123 and KuuL called all-in for 471,185. KuuL was in trouble with J♠J♣ versus Popiedejopie's K♦K♥. The board ran out 9♠4♦3♦A♦K♣ and Popiedejopie actually rivered a set of Kings. KuuL was knocked out in eighth place and took home $13,425.75.

With seven remaining, Popiedejopie was the new leader with approximately 1.6M.

BLACK DIAMOND BAY: gray31 eliminated in 7th place

Popiedejopie claimed another victim. Popiedejopie opened to 63,250 and gray31 called. The flop of J♣T♣5♥ induced action... gray31 checked, Popiedejopie bet 71,225, gray31 check-raised to 167,890, Popiedejopie re-raised all-in for 1,669,308, and gray31 called all-in for 275,609.

gray31: K♥K♠
Popiedejopie: Q♣8♣

Popiedejopie flopped a flush draw and a gutshot draw, but gray31's pocket Kings were still ahead. The turn was the 8♦ and the river was the 5♣. Popiedejopie rivered a Queen-high flush to win the pot. For a seventh-place finish, gray31 took home $20,310.75.

With six to go, Popiedejopie chipped up to 2.2M. The closest behind was Clarkson7 (1.37M) in second, and HC_68 (1.29M) right behind in third. The shorty was mandza17 with 304K.

SARA: mandza17 eliminated in 6th place

Ambushed by Aces. Battle of the blinds. Small blind mandza17 shoved for 319,278 with Q♠8♣ and WICKED617 snap-called from the big blind with A♥A♠. The board ran out A♦J♥3♦J♦3♣. WICKED617 flopped a set of Aces and turned a full house to win the pot. Croatia's mandza17 was busto in sixth place, which paid out $27,195.75.

ROMANCE IN DURANGO: WICKED617 eliminated in 5th place

WICKED617 was being hunted down as a short stack. HC_68 opened to 72,500, WICKED617 moved all-in for 343,338 with 6♣6♠ and HC_68 called with A♣8♣. HC_68 flopped a flush draw and turned a Broadway draw. The board ran out K♣Q♥9♣J♦T♣. WICKED617 played the board, which was a King-high straight. Alas, HC_68 rivered an Ace-high flush to win the pot. For fifth place, WICKED617 earned $34,080.75.

With four remaining, Clarkson7 led with 2.9M, followed by Popiedejopie (1.8M),  HC_68 (1.2M), and holy h3ll 867K.

OH, SISTER: holy h3ll eliminated in 4th place

Another shorty hit the road. Clarkson7 opened to 107,500, holy h3ll moved all-in for 754,440 with Q♠J♦, and Clarkson7 called with K♣Q♥. The board ran out Q♣9♦5♥3♦8♠. Both players flopped a pair of Queens, but Clarkson7 won with a better kicker. Israel's holy h3ll finished in fourth place, which paid out $47,919.60.

DEAL

With three remaining, action was paused to discuss a deal. Popiedejopie led with 2.87M, followed by  Clarkson7 (2.65M), and HC_68 (1.39M). Any deal had to leave $10,000 on the table to the winner. ICM numbers were floated: Popiedejopie ($90,801.30), Clarkson7 ($89,727.07), and HC_68 ($79,776.73). Popiedejopie quickly chimed in: "I agree to ICM, nothing else." Everyone else agreed to the deal and play resumed.

ONE MORE CUP OF COFFEE: HC_68 eliminated in 3rd place

Three-handed did not last very long once a money deal was sealed. Popiedejopie min-raised to 100,000, HC_68 shoved for 564,032 with Q♥7♥, and Popiedejopie called 2♣2♠. Pocket deuces held up when the board ran out A♦J♠5♦K♠5♠. HC_68 busted in third place, which paid out $79,776.73.

HEADS-UP: Clarkson7 (United Kingdom) vs. Popiedejopie (Netherlands)
Seat 3: Clarkson7 (3,232,279)
Seat 8: Popiedejopie (3,652,721)

Nearly even with two remaining and a deal already in place.

Early on during heads-up, Popiedejopie struck first blood to win a 1.8M pot with A♦2♠ after flopping trip deuces. At that point, Popiedejopie opened up a lead 4.7M to 2.1M.

Just short of the 30-minute mark, Popiedejopie attempted to put away Clarkson7 for good. Both players got it all-in preflop. Clarkson7 five-bet shoved for 2.6M with A♦K♠, and Popiedejopie called with T♥T♣. The K♥ spiked on the turn and Clarkson7 avoided an elimination and doubled up to win a 5.2M pot. The tides had turned and Popiedejopie was down to 1.6M after unsuccessfully delivering a knockout punch.

During Level 41, Popiedejopie regained the lead after coming from behind with A♣6♥ against Clarkson7's 8♥8♦. Popiedejopie rivered an A♠ to stay alive, and double up to win a pot worth 3.8M.

Clarkson7 won four hands in the row to get back ahead. At the start of Level 42, the two were around 3.5M each and swapped the lead a few times. Clarkson7 had Popiedejopie on the ropes but couldn't knock him out. Popiedejopie won a 6.3M pot with 6♣5♠ vs. 5♣2♣. Both players turned a straight, but Clarkson7's Wheel lost to Popiedejopie's seven-high straight. At that point, Clarkson7 was crippled and down to 607K in chips. Although Clarkson7 put up a good fight with such a small stack, Clarkson7 could not stop Popiedejopie from winning it all.

CHANGING OF THE GUARDS: Clarkson7 eliminated in 2nd place; Popiedejopie wins WCOOP Event #49

On the final hand... Popiedejopie min-raised to 200,000, Clarkson7 bombed it all-in for 1,302,284 with Q♥7♥, and Popiedejopie called with K♦J♣. The board finished up A♠7♠5♠J♦T♥. Clarkson7 flopped a pair of sevens to take the lead, but Popiedejopie turned a pair of Jacks, which held up to win.

For a runner-up performance, Clarkson7 earned $89,727.07.

Congrats to Popiedejopie for winning Event #49. First place paid out $100,801.30. This marks a second COOP for Popiedejopie, who won a TCOOP along with a Sunday Million title. Now, Popiedejopie is only a SCOOP win away from clinching a Triple COOP and an even rarer Stars Grand Slam.
