WCOOP 2015: hangoverdose wins, Somerville seventh in Event #43 ($320 HORSE)

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Somerville has made yet another deep run at the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker, but unfortunately the gold has eluded him once more. Somerville would reach the final table of Event #43 but progressed no further than seventh place as it was hangoverdose from Greece who received the spoils of victory on an entertaining WCOOP final table.

Event #43 of the World Championship of Online Poker was a $320 HORSE event which attracted a field of 450 players. They built a prize pool of $135,000 which was close to doubling the advertised guarantee for this event.

Among the starters were Team PokerStars Pros Kosei Ichinose, Jason Mercier, George Danzer, Adrienne Rowsome and Ukranian Eugene Katchalov fresh off his runner-up result in Event #37.

They were unable to reach the money as only the top 64 players would lock up a profit. When ricestud was bounced out on the money bubble, the remaining players had locked up $479.25 and were eyeing off a run towards the final table.

Two red spades were still alive in the money stage. Japanese star Naoya Kihara made it to 53rd place for $506.25, but once again social media was abuzz with Jason "jcarverpoker" Somerville making yet another deep WCOOP run.

Despite claiming to have limited experience in mixed games, Somerville was one of the chip leaders as the field started to narrow, which meant he again had a massive following of his live Twitch stream at runitup.tv.

Somerville was aiming for his third WCOOP final table of the series and he achieved that feat when he disposed of GNL0239 on the final table bubble. It was a hand of Seven-Card Stud with Somerville's pair holding up against the ace-high of the short stack to see our final table formed as follows:

Final Table Line up
Seat 1: BtrGetThere (429,136 in chips)
Seat 2: Pthelegend (149,392 in chips)
Seat 3: Creatiff111 (282,022 in chips)
Seat 4: Some1Nebo (392,051 in chips)
Seat 5: gkap13 (61,976 in chips)
Seat 6: hangoverdose (270,368 in chips)
Seat 7: Jason "jcarverpoker" Somerville (243,645 in chips)
Seat 8: Fresh_oO_D (421,410 in chips)

The stacks were relatively even with the exception of gkap13 as the short stack who was under pressure from the very first hand of the final table.

Stud Hi-Lo was the game, and gkap13 became entangled in a four-way pot. gkap13 was all in on fifth street and was showing 6♠5♥Q♦A♠ but when the action continued through to the river, gkap13 was left to muck when Pthelegend tabled (6♥2♥)5♠A♥Q♣J♥(4♦) for a six-low as Fresh_oO_D's (K♣3♣)7♠2♣4♣K♦(9♥) pair of kings was enough for the high. Gkap13 couldn't beat either and was left to depart in eighth place for a $2,700 score.

After taking a big hit with a fold on seventh street on one of the last hands of Stud Hi-Lo, it would be the first hand of Limit Holdem that finally brought an end to the run of Jason Somerville. From the button, Somerville opened for a raise before Fresh_oO_D three-bet from the small blind. Somerville called in position to see a flop of K♠J♠6♣. Fresh_oO_D led out with a bet, Somerville raised and Fresh_oO_D made the call to see the T♠ hit the turn. That was the card that sparked a raising war before Somerville's last chips were in the middle holding T♣J♥ for two pair but Fresh_oO_D had turned the nut straight with A♠Q♣. The river was the 6♦ to leave Somerville and his legion of Twitch fans to depart in seventh place for $3,375 in prize money.

Pthelegend would be next to fall. After the blinds circled a few times, Pthelegend was down to just over three big blinds when the last chips went in the middle preflop. Pthelegend went with Q♠J♦ for live cards against Some1Nebo's A♠T♦. The board ran out K♥2♠A♥7♠3♣ to pair up the ace and leave Pthelegend to depart in sixth place for a tidy $4,725 collect.

With the game switching to Omaha Hi-Lo, BtrGetThere was the one under pressure as the short stack. BtrGetThere was looking for a triple up when a big pot erupted against both Creatiff111 and Fresh_oO_D. There were raises preflop and on the flop before BtrGetThere's last chips were in on the turn on the J♦6♦2♥3♦ board. Both opponents called before one more bet was committed into the side pot on the 9♠ river. Fresh_oO_D showed 3♠9♦A♥7♠ for two pair for the high while Creatiff111's J♣4♣Q♥A♦ took the low. That left BtrGetThere squeezed out of both and with cards sent to the muck, BtrGetThere departed in fifth place which was worth $6,750.

Some1Nebo landed a double up in Seven-Card Stud with a full house against the trips of hangoverdose, however hangoverdose was able to extract revenge, winning five big pots in a row to send Some1Nebo to the rail.

The final hand for Some1Nebo was capped on third before the last chips were tossed in on fourth. Some1Nebo was drawing strong but ultimately missed with a board of 6♦7♠A♠4♠K♠2♥3♥ to be left with ace-high as hangoverdose was able to improve holding A♦K♦3♣4♥Q♦4♦9♣ with a lowly pair of fours enough to take it down. Some1Nebo picked up $10,125 for fourth place.

hangoverdose was into the chip lead and extended that further with the elimination of Fresh_oO_D. The game had moved to Stud Hi-Lo, with the action capped preflop before the last few chips were committed on fourth. Very similar to the previous elimination, the board of Fresh_oO_D ran out a bare 5♠7♠8♦A♦Q♣J♦9♥ for just ace-high with hangoverdose making a small pair on the board of K♣J♥9♣5♥3♣3♦7♥. hangoverdose claimed another victim as Fresh_oO_D was left to take home $13,851 for third place.

The two players were happy to play it out with hangoverdose chipping up a little in the early stages to take a two-to-one chip lead. Most of the pots were relatively small until hangoverdose took down one of the first major pots with a full house during Omaha Hi-Lo.

hangoverdose continued to apply the pressure and started to pick up the majority of pots towards the end of Omaha Hi-Lo and start of Razz.

Creatiff111 landed a double up with an eight-low in Razz as hangoverdose's board double-paired but hangoverdose was quick to recover those chips two hands later with a seven-low.

Creatiff111 was left desperately short, but the Russian wasn't going down without a fight. Creatiff111 survived four all-ins in the Razz round and another two in Seven-Card Stud to stay alive in the quest for the WCOOP gold, but in the end, hangoverdose would seal the deal.

It was Seven-Card Stud with Creatiff111 completing before leading the betting on fourth. hangoverdose raised and Creatiff111 called before the rest of the chips were all in on fifth street. Creatiff111 had a buried pair and ended with two pair on a board of (5♠5♣)7♥8♠2♥8♦(Q♠). However that wasn't enough as hangoverdose made a better two pair with (7♠K♣)2♠K♥4♠2♦(7♦) for kings-up to take the pot and the title!

A great run by Creatiff111 ends one short of the title but the Russian takes home $18,900 for a fine tournament as the WCOOP title heads to Greece with hangoverdose crowned champion for $25,650 in prize money. Congratulations!
