WCOOP 2016: T3G3S denies lehout a repeat win in Event #38 ($320 NL Hold'em [6-Max, Shootout])
Could he do it again? Two years ago, lehout won this very event, pairing the SCOOP title he won in 2011 with WCOOP gold. In the interim, the Dutchman won a second SCOOP title, and had the chance to become a repeat 6-Max Shootout champion today. Lehout made it to three-handed play second in chips, but couldn't maintain traction in the face of the surging T3G3S, himself a SCOOP champion who scored nearly a quarter of a million dollars back in 2013. T3G3S ended lehout's run in third place, then took less than ten minutes to outrun Patrick "thebigdog09" Brooks heads-up and earned his first WCOOP title.
The lone NLHE shootout of the 2016 WCOOP drew 966 players. The 216 of them who won their first six-handed table earned a share of the $289,800.00 prize pool, with $46,368.36 going to the winner.
Day 1 was comprised of three shootout rounds. The field went from 966 to 216, then 216 to 36, and 36 to the final 6 before play was suspended for the night. The final table began afresh on Day 2, with the blinds back at 50/100 and each player sporting a 10,000-chip stack.
Final table chip counts
Seat 1: vladxxxro (10,000 in chips)
Seat 2: thebigdog09 (10,000 in chips)
Seat 3: T3G3S (10,000 in chips)
Seat 4: !!f1ghtback! (10,000 in chips)
Seat 5: lehout (10,000 in chips)
Seat 6: Kaggis (10,000 in chips)
Thebigdog09 was the first player to break away from the pack, while Kaggis was the first to see his chip count slide precipitously. With the blinds up to 60/120, Kaggis made a button raise to 270 and thebigdog09 three-bet to 865. Kaggis four-bet to 2,165 only to be met with a shove from thebigdog09. Kaggis gave up his hand and fell to 4,185 in chips, while thebigdog09 moved into the chip lead with 14,146. Kaggis couldn't get anything going and with 2,406 in chips left at the 100/200 level, he three-bet shoved from the big blind with 7♦7♣ only to run into T3G3S's K♥K♣. Kaggis got no help on the A♠K♠T♣3♥A♦ board and hit the rail in sixth place.
During five-handed play, thebigdog09 still had the chip lead with 18,386, while T3G3S and lehout sported about 15,000 apiece. However, T3G3S again picked up pocket kings and opened from UTG, only to be three-bet by lehout. T3G3S smooth-called and they saw a 7♥4♥4♣ flop. T3G3S check-raised lehout's 1,142 continuation bet to 2,884 and lehout called. The turn brought the 7♣ and T3G3S checked again. Lehout bet 1,451 and T3G3S called. The 2♠ landed on the river and T3G3S checked again. This time lehout smartly checked behind, as he could not beat T3G3S's kings and sevens. T3G3S raked in the 11,797 pot and moved up to 21,095 in chips, while lehout slipped to 9,177. Then, on the next deal, T3G3S picked up Q♦J♣ and hit a gutshot straight draw on a T♥8♥6♠ flop vs. vladxxxro. T3G3S check-called 768 on the flop and it went check-check when the turn fell the 6♣. However, T3G3S made a queen-high straight when the 9♣ rivered. T3G3S check-raised to 3,444 and vladxxxro paid him off. The 9,449 pot took T3G3S up to 25,907, while vladxxxro was left with only 3,077.
Vladxxxro slipped to 2,077 before getting the rest of his chips in the middle with A♠9♦. !!f1ghtback! had him dominated with A♦T♥, but vladxxxro flopped a nine and turned trips to double to 4,364. !!f1ghtback! was left with only 1,854 and open-shoved a few hands later with T♣T♦. T3G3S called from the big blind with K♠2♥. Although !!f1ghtback! maintained his lead on the 8♠4♠3♦ flop, the K♦ spiked to pair T3G3S's king. The 6♦ river didn't save !!f1ghtback! and he departed in fifth place. T3G3S now held a dominating chip lead, his 32,102 nearly double the stack of second-place thebigdog09.
Meanwhile, vladxxxro was still hanging on with 3,992 in chips and checked his option to see a 6♥3♥2♣ flop with lehout. Lehout checked, vladxxxro bet 600 and lehout called. The turn came the 9♦ and lehout checked again. Vladxxxro moved in for 3,122 and lehout called, revealing 8♠9♥ for top pair. Vladxxxro had 5♥7♥ for flush and straight draws. The 5♠, however, wasn't enough to get him there and vladxxxro exited in fourth place.
When three-handed play commenced, T3G3S held 28,961, lehout was second with 20,062, and thebigdog09 was the short stack with 10,977. Thebigdog fell to 7,059 in chips before he doubled back up through lehout, his A♥T♥ holding up against Q♦T♦. However, both of them continued to slide backward while T3G3S's trajectory took him past the 40,000-chip mark. With the blinds up to 200/400, T3G3S and lehout limped in from the blinds to see a 6♠5♠4♦ flop. T3G3S led out for 541, lehout raised to 1,922 and T3G3S moved in for 39,864. Lehout called off his remaining 4,703 and revealed 4♣7♦ for bottom pair and an open-ended straight draw, while T3G3S turned up 4♥5♥ for bottom two pair. The 2♣ turn and the 2♦ river were no help for lehout, and his quest for a repeat WCOOP shootout title came to an end in third place.
Heads-up chip counts
Seat 2: thebigdog09 (12,561 in chips)
Seat 3: T3G3S (47,439 in chips)
T3T3S had close to a 4 to 1 chip advantage going into heads-up play and struck another blow on the second hand of the match. With the blinds still 200/400, thebigdog09 limped in on the button, T3G3S made it 1,400 to go and thebigdog09 called. Both players checked the A♥Q♥Q♠ flop. When the 7♦ turned, T3G3S led out for 800 and thebigdog09 called. The river was the K♠ and T3G3S passed to thebigdog09, who bet 1,421. Thebigdog09 had nothing but a busted flush draw with 6♥9♥ and T3G3S took down the pot with 8♦8♥ and moved over the 50,000-chip mark.
T3G3S traded small pots for about eight minutes when T3G3S picked up K♠J♥ and opened for an 8x-raise to 3,200 on the button. Thebigdog09 shoved for 5,215 and T3G3S called. Thebigdog09's K♦6♦ was dominated, and he got no help on the J♣T♥8♣9♥J♠ board, as T3G3S made trip jacks and locked up the win.
Congratulations to Poland's T3G3S on pairing his SCOOP watch with a WCOOP title! He banked $46,368.36 for his efforts, while runner-up Patrick "thebigdog09" Brooks earned $34,776.00.
