2016 WCOOP: MonsieurRask basks in glory in Event #10 ($1,050 NLHE Super Tuesday SE)
The most prestigious online poker tournament festival in the world has arrived with the 2016 World Championship of Online Poker now in full swing. And one of the biggest and most respected tournaments on the schedule is the Super Tuesday Special Edition.
This event is always a tough one, full of tough professionals from all around the world, and this final table was loaded with former PokerStars champions. However there can only be one winner, and this time it was MonsieurRask from the United Kingdom emerging triumphant to claim a top prize of over $225,000.
The Super Tuesday is the world's largest weekly online poker tournament, and for Event #10 of the 2016 WCOOP, the usual huge prize pool swelled even further as 1,470 players handed over the $1,050 buy-in to create a massive $1,470,000 prize pool.
Among the entrants were the usual mix of high-stakes pros, WCOOP grinders and Team PokerStars Pros including Randy Lew, George Danzer, Andre Akkari, Felipe Ramos, Leo Fernandez and Liv Boeree.
After the first day of play, the tournament was delicately poised with 166 players remaining in contention approaching the money bubble for the top 161. Swedish player iamivar was leading the way, while Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier was sitting nicely in the top 20.
When play resumed, five players would fall short of the money and sadly, one of those was Team PokerStars Pro Jason Somerville who fell in 165th place. When Malta's 69sBigLick was eliminated on the bubble, the remaining players were assured of a $2,925.15 min-cash.
Things didn't quite go to plan for Grospellier on Day 2 who would progress as far as 57th place for $4,177.88 in prize money as the last Team PokerStars Pro standing.
The plan was probably also a little different for tournament big stack Ben "bennybunny18" Richardson who was bounced out on the final table bubble after losing a flip with queen-jack against pocket fives. With bennybunny18's elimination in tenth place, the final table was set as follows:
Final Table Line up
Seat 1: OverTheTop43 (2,155,057 in chips)
Seat 2: zzwwzzwwzz (1,986,628 in chips)
Seat 3: William "hellzito" Arruda (1,108,780 in chips)
Seat 4: MonsieurRask (1,298,997 in chips)
Seat 5: JIZOINT (1,218,248 in chips)
Seat 6: iamivar (2,607,481 in chips)
Seat 7: Cristian "progre69" Sampaoli (1,308,713 in chips)
Seat 8: uwintakeit (682,994 in chips)
Seat 9: Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu (2,333,102 in chips)
It was an interesting final table which included Day 1 chip leader iamivar, who had incredibly maintained that lead on Day 2, former Super Tuesday winners Cristian "progre69" Sampaoli and Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu, two-time SCOOP champion JIZOINT, as well as the defending champion in this very event William "hellzito" Arruda who was gunning for back-to-back titles.
The first major pot of the final table would see the chip leader take a big hit as uwintakeit turned a straight with ace-queen to double up through iamivar's pocket sevens. The defending champion hellzito then joined in the fun with a couple of big double ups against Narcisus90. The first was hellzito's pocket eights holding against ace-king, before Narcisus90 tried to fire a big river bluff with ace-high, only to see hellzito make a great call with top pair, top kicker.
It would take some time before losing our first player with JIZOINT the one to fall. After an open from MonsieurRask, JIZOINT moved all in with A♦J♣ but the timing was unfortunate as MonsieurRask snapped it off with A♣A♥. The board ran out J♠7♦2♠4♦8♥ and one pair wasn't enough for JIZOINT to survive with ninth place worth $18,812.91.
It was a quick fall from grace for iamivar who would be the next to go. After the early battles on the final table went against him, iamivar found the perfect spot to get the short stack into the middle holding A♥A♦, after both OverTheTop43 and hellzito had already committed all in preflop. OverTheTop43 showed T♠T♥ and hellzito had K♦K♠ as iamivar looked set for a triple up. However the board ran out T♦9♣5♣9♥Q♣ spiking the set for OverTheTop43 to leave iamivar to crash to the rail in eighth place for $25,665.61.
MonsieurRask gained some momentum with a series of pots and was into the chip lead before disposing of Narcisus90 in seventh place. Narcisus90 three-bet all in preflop with Q♣J♠ but MonsieurRask made a solid call with A♥8♥. The flop was an interesting A♠9♥T♦ as MonsieurRask caught an ace but Narcisus90 picked up an open-ended straight draw. Those outs were reduced when the 4♥ turn put another heart out there, before the 2♠ completed the board. Narcisus90 collected $35,014.66 for seventh place.
hellzito and progre69 played out the biggest pot of the tournament so far, but the end result was only a split when both had flopped a straight holding a rather deceptive six-four.
That was followed by a double up to OverTheTop43 who called it off with top pair which held against zzwwzzwwzz who pushed on the turn with a straight and flush draw that ultimately missed on the river.
That hand was a blow to zzwwzzwwzz who was unable to recover. With a short stack, zzwwzzwwzz moved all in preflop with Q♥T♣ from the button but MonsieurRask made the call in the big blind with a superior A♦9♠. The board was spread K♣K♥6♥8♦6♦ which missed both players to leave zzwwzzwwzz to depart in sixth place for $47,768.97.
uwintakeit caught a lucky king on the river to double up with king-queen against OverTheTop43's pocket sevens, but OverTheTop43 got a little revenge a short time later with ace-queen finding a pair against uwintakeit's pocket threes.
However both players would survive long enough to outlast Cristian "progre69" Sampaoli.
Following a raise under the gun by uwintakeit, action folded to progre69 in the small blind who moved all in for 17 big blinds with 4♣4♥. uwintakeit made the call with A♦J♣ for yet another preflop race. Again it was the overcards that connected with the board of 7♥7♦A♠K♥T♣ to give uwintakeit a winning pair of aces. progre69 picked up $65,169.36 for his fifth place finish.
With four players left it was MonsieurRask out in front with over three times the stack of the nearest rival, but uwintakeit was living life dangerously with another big double up, this time with pocket nines against hellzito's ace-king.
OverTheTop43 fought back with pocket kings holding against uwintakeit's ace-queen before a bit of a cooler brought an end to the title defence of hellzito.
In a three-bet pot, with bets on the flop and turn, the pot had already swelled large when the board was spread 9♥J♥6♥2♠J♦. hellzito checked it for a third time over to MonsieurRask who moved all in. With tournament life on the line, hellzito made the call with J♠T♦ for trip jacks but MonsieurRask had a monster with 9♦9♠ for a full house! An unlucky end for hellzito who picked up $88,908.09 for fourth place.
The momentum and the luck just seemed to be with MonsieurRask. uwintakeit was a touch unlucky not to double up after flopping a set against MonsieurRask after all the chips were in preflop. However five hearts on board meant a split pot to leave uwintakeit on the short stack.
OverTheTop43 had better luck with pocket nines holding against MonsieurRask's king-jack and the pressure was back on uwintakeit to make something happen. Finding A♠K♣ seemed like a good spot three-handed, and uwintakeit was happy to four-bet all in, but in another cooler of a hand, MonsieurRask snapped it off with a monster K♥K♠. The board bricked 7♣4♣4♥J♣T♦ and uwintakeit was left to depart in third place for a massive $121,293.81 score.
Heads-up Chip Counts
Seat 1: OverTheTop43 (3,477,500 in chips)
Seat 4: MonsieurRask (11,222,500 in chips)
It was a big lead for MonsieurRask as heads-up play commenced, and despite winning a nice pot on the third hand with a flush, OverTheTop43 was unable to mount a comeback.
On the fifth hand of the duel, the two would take a flop of 4♣K♣9♦. MonsieurRask checked and OverTheTop43 continued with a bet that was met with a check-raise from MonsieurRask. OverTheTop43 made the call and the 7♥ hit the turn. MonsieurRask bet again and OverTheTop43 called as the A♦ completed the board. MonsieurRask went for the kill and moved all in with OverTheTop43 making the call for tournament life. OverTheTop43 showed K♦2♣ for a flopped top pair, but MonsieurRask had the goods with K♠9♣ for two pair to claim the pot and the victory!
A great score of $165,476.43 for OverTheTop43 for second place, but on this occasion the WCOOP victory would head to the United Kingdom with MonsieurRask grabbing the win and $225,754.16 in prize money. Congratulations!
