WCOOP 2017: KumariOy Wins Event #3-H Sunday Million for $310K, Bryn Kenney Finishes 4th

The 2017 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) crowned another winner on Monday, this time in WCOOP-03-H: $1,050 NLHE [Sunday Million SE]. Russia's KumariOy prevailed over a tough final table that included poker pro Bryn Kenney.

If the name KumariOy sounds familiar, you might recognize him as a 2013 SCOOP champ after he bested 799 entrants to win Event #7-H ($700 NL Heads-Up) for $80,354.20. He also finished third in the 2015 SCOOP Main Event for over $700K.

In the WCOOP tournament, which boasted a $1.5M GTD, 2,074 players created a $2,074,000 prize pool. That was distributed to the top 251 players after Sweden's Leo "ISILDRooN" Nordin busted as bubble boy in 252nd place.

Among those to cash were Team PokerStars Pros Lex Veldhuis (223rd - $2,289.07) and Jake Cody (99th - $4,603.45), as well as Naoya "nkenyo" Kihara (156th - $2,889.28), Bernardo "bedias" Dias (129th - $3,646.92), Mustapha "lasagnaaammm" Kanit (111th - $3,646.92), Sam "SamSquid" Grafton (31st - $7,334.28), and final table bubble boy "AceSpades11" (10th - $14,749.66).

Here's how things stacked up at the final table:

1: Bryn "BrynKenney" Kenney (Mexico) 20,642,330
2: NEWFlat (Russia) 19,650,472
3: KumariOy (Russia) 14,828,929
4: M Cunha G (Brazil) 13,395,574
5: terror777727 (Bulgaria) 10,332,784
6: a Bull 67 (Denmark) 9,089,958
7: JúlioFantin (Brazil) 6,286,902
8: ShootTheSky (UK) 5,079,485
9: pochi (Costa Rica) 4,393,566

Short Stacks Fall

The trio of short stacks were the first three to go starting with Costa Rica's pochi. It happened with the blinds at 125,000/250,000/32,500 when KumariOy (17,058,929) raised to 500,000 under the gun holding the A♠A♣ and pochi three-bet jammed from the cutoff with the 7♥7♠.

Action folded back to KumariOy, he called, and the aces held after the board ran out a clean T♥5♣4♣4♥3♠.

A dozen hands later, the blinds were the same when Kenney (15,214,386) raised to 500,000 from the hijack and then called after ShootTheSky (4,501,730) moved all in from the big blind.

Kenney: A♥K♣
ShootTheSky: A♠J♣

ShootTheSky had a kicker problem and it didn't get resolved as the board ran out a lackluster 3♥T♥6♠6♦Q♠. ShootTheSky earned $27,426.16 for finishing in eighth place.

After the blinds went up to 150,000/300,000/37,500, NEWFlat (31,498,515) raised to 600,000 from the hijack with the K♣T♥ and JúlioFantin (4,549,402) defended from the big blind holding the T♥8♦.

The 8♥6♣T♠ flop gave JúlioFantin two pair, and he coyly checked it to NEWFlat, who bet 564,375. JúlioFantin responded by check-raising all in for 3,911,902 and NEWFlat called. JúlioFantin got it in good, but the running Q♥ turn and Q♣ river counterfeited him by giving NEWFlat queens and tens with a king kicker. Just like that, JúlioFantin hit the virtual rail in seventh place for $38,786.49.

Classic Race Results in terror777727's Elimination

With the blinds at 200,000/400,000/50,000, terror777727 (7,808,410) raised to 868,000 under the gun and action folded all the way around to NEWFlat (17,027,843), who simply moved all in from the big blind. terror777727 called off his remaining 6,890,410 and the cards were turned up.

NEWFlat: A♥K♥
terror777727: Q♠Q♥

It was a classic flip, but not after the A♠2♦J♦ flop paired NEWFlat. Neither the J♥ turn nor 7♠ river was the lady terror777727 was looking for, and he was bounced in sixth place for $54,852.11.

Big Slick Doesn't Do the Trick for NEWFlat

In Level 45 (250,000/500,000/62,500), NEWFlat (18,934,722) raised to 1 million under the gun with the A♠K♥ and a Bull 67 (39,349,332) three-bet to 3 million from the button with the J♥J♠. Both blinds folded, NEWFlat moved all in, and a Bull 67 called.

NEWFlat needed to improve to stay alive, but that proved easier said than done as the board ran out a dry 6♦7♥2♥Q♠5♦. NEWFlat finished in fifth place for $77,572.57.

Bryn Kenney Falls Short

With the blinds at 300,000/600,000/75,000, action folded to a Bull 67 (55,071,554) in the small blind and he raised to 1.2 million, which Kenney (10,168,436) called from the big. When the flop fell 8♦9♣6♠, a Bull 67 led out for 1.35 million and then called when Kenney moved all in for 8,893,436.

Kenney: J♣9♦
a Bull 67: Q♣Q♠

Kenney had flopped top pair, but he was still behind the overpair of a Bull 67. The 6♣ turn and J♠ runout gave Kenney jacks and nines, but it was second best to a Bull 67's queens and sixes. Kenney, who has won $6,240,894 in the live realm in 2017, had to settle for fourth place and a $109,703.81 payday.

Bye-Bye Brazilian

Not long after, M Cunha G (13,328,472) raised to 1.2 million from the button with the J♦8♠ and KumariOy (23,106,538) called from the big blind holding the J♣9♠. M Cunha G was behind, but not after the 8♥Q♥8♣ flop gave him trips.

KumariOy proceeded to check-call a bet of 1 million before both players checked the 4♠ turn. When the [10s] completed the board on the river, KumariOy checked his straight and M Cunha G bet 4,925,250. KumariOy then moved all in and M Cunha G called off his remaining 6,128,222, meaning he was out in third place for $155,144.53.

a Bull 67 Finishes as Runner-Up

Heads-up play finished in the same level and happened when KumariOy (91,666,482) simply moved all in from the button and a Bull 67 (12,033,518) called off from the big blind.

a Bull 67: A♠9♠
KumariOy: J♣T♥

a Bull 67 got it in good, and he even flopped top pair on the 8♠9♣3♦ flop. However, KumariOy flopped an open-ended straight draw, and while the 4♥ turn didn't complete it, the 7♠ river did.

a Bull 67 had to settle for second place and a $219,407.42 consolation prize, while KumariOy claimed the title and $310,289.83 top prize.
