WCOOP 2017: LoosControl is in control of Event #21-H ($215 NLHE, 8-Max)

Germany's LoosControl took over the chip lead with 38 players remaining and rarely looked back en route to heads-up play in Event #21-H. Once there, fellow German ImSivvis proved to be a formidable challenge. But LoosControl held firm and locked up a first career COOP title.

LoosControl's only real stumble on the way to the heads-up play came on the 175,000/350,000/45,000 level when the table was four-handed. TCOOP 2017 finalist Stoqnov303 of Bulgaria doubled to 16.5 million chips through LoosControl, the past Sunday Warm-Up third-place finisher, with A♥ Q♥ against 6♦ 6♥ thanks to a queen on the flop. LoosControl's stack was still at a dominant 29 million then, twice as much as Stoqnov303's and ImSivvis's and four times bigger than DREAMSP0T's, but things shifted quickly.

Two hands later ImSivvis and DREAMSP0T both made top pair on the 8♣ 5♥ Q♦ flop, but ImSivvis's K♦ Q♥ made kings full after the K♥ turn and K♣ river. DREAMSP0T's Q♠ T♣ was no good and the Belgian player bowed out in fourth. That win moved ImSivvis to within about 20 big blinds of LoosControl's leading stack.

Another two hands later, the two of them faced off. LoosControl opened for 1.05 million in the small blind with Q♣ 9♣ and then called when ImSivvis re-raised to 3.3 million to see the 3♣ 6♠ 5♥ flop. LoosControl went for the bluff check-raise, bumping the bet to 6.7 million after ImSivvis led for 2.3 million, but ImSivvis called and the K♣ came on the turn. LoosControl led for 9.9 million, about half the pot, on another bluff and then, committed to the pot, called when ImSivvis moved in for 4.6 million more. ImSivvis had turned top two pair with K♠ 6♦ and took down a massive 49.5-million-chip pot after the J♦ hit the river.

In need of some help, LoosControl found it a few hands later - in the rare form of quad aces. After raising with A♦ A♥ in the big blind, LoosControl flopped top set against Stoqnov's middle pair and flush draw with 8♣ 4♣ in the small blind. All the money went in there and the A♠ on the turn locked up the 12.7-million-chip pot for LoosControl.

Three hands later ImSivvis min-raised with A♦ K♥ and LoosControl defended the big blind with J♣ 5♣, bringing a 9♣ A♥ K♣ flop. The money didn't go in until LoosControl had already made a flush on the 2♣ turn, and LoosControl was right back in the game with 26.4 million chips when ImSivvis missed the boat on the 4♠ river. Minutes later Stoqnov303 shoved with Q♣ J♠ in the small blind after ImSivvis raised the button, only to run into LoosControl's A♦ J♣ in the big blind. Both players missed the board and Stoqnov303 bowed out in third.

After going from massive leader to desperate short stack in the span of a few minutes, LoosControl was in control once again. In this case, control was a 10-big-blind lead against ImSivvis. It took 10 minutes to expand that lead after making a pair of aces on the flop and coaxing ImSivvis into a bluff with a pair of fours on the river of a board reading A♥ 4♣ 9♥ J♠ 6♣. Consistent aggression over the following 10 minutes after that moved LoosControl's stack upwards of 54 million and left ImSivvis in desperate straits for close to half an hour, until both players made a flush on a four-diamond board, LoosControl with A♠ Q♦ and ImSivvis with the winning A♦ 8♥.

That pot reset their stacks to where the match had begun, just as the break rolled around. LoosControl's fortunes rebounded, though, and an 11-pot winning streak took ImSivvis's stack back under 40 big blinds. Then they met in a final coin-flip, LoosControl with A♦ 8♦ and ImSivvis with 5♦ 5♣; the 8♣ on the flop was all it took to bring the tournament to a close.

Congratulations to ImSivvis on pushing the champion so far, and to LoosControl for locking up a major title!
