WCOOP 2017: Second chance gives MLS20 the win and $74K in Event #43 ($215+R NLHE, 3-Max, Turbo, ZOOM)
While usually financially lucrative, the runner-up finish is rarely well-received. Some let it hinder them into play softly, never reaching those top-heavy payouts again. Others use it as motivation to claim that title that one person denied. The 2017 World Championship of Online Poker Event #43 $215+R 3-Max, Turbo, ZOOM final table featured one such player who took only seven days to earn that second chance.
MLS20 made the final table in Event #20 which had a similar structure, losing to Graftekkel heads-up. But not here, as MLS20 finished off KKsuckAA to claim the title and $74,098.39.
The timer said less than a minute until the start of hour four as the tables came out of the ZOOM portion of the tournament. Six settings with three players, each already assured $4,039.53. But, Powergolf, paul_peaches, and former Team PokerStars Online Caio Pessagno all managed to bust within the final minute as only 15 players would advance to the fourth hour.
Last year Mikael "fuddebuf" Hansen nearly claimed a Spring Championship of Online Poker title in Event #27-L finishing as the runner-up, another late -COOP run here also ended title-less in 14th place ($7,332.23).
Turbo Championship of Online Poker champ (2013 - Event #24) PSMozak finished in eighth-place after a 20 minute purging wave took the tournament down from 14 to eight. And while the beginning of the hour was a race to the rail, all eight made it to the fifth hour. Including KKsuckAA who suffered bad beats on three all-ins yet still managed to extend tournament life to the next hour.
Former Sunday Warm-Up champ R0HR and j-8ofsuite finally ran out of luck against KKsuckAA finishing seventh and eighth respectively as another table closed down.
Calvin7v is certainly at home for late-game -COOP play. Holding four -COOP titles (three SCOOPs and one WCOOP title in 2015), calvin7v was going for another one here. But, GiVeMeBaLLs had other ideas standing up to the four-time champ and sending calvin7v away in sixth place ($13,407.75). A few hands later a turned straight for GiVeMeBaLLs was ill-fated as pampa27 notched a turned flush bringing up hand-for-hand play.
Pampa27 continued the hot streak getting despedespi33 all-in after a queen-high flop. Both held top pair but king kicker for pampa27 easily out-notched the deuce held by despedespi33 bringing up the final table below:
Seat 1: KKsuckAA (3355107 in chips)
Seat 2: MLS20 (7980739 in chips)
Seat 3: Damián "pampa27" Salas (11584154 in chips)
KKsuckAA would breach the chat box during the sixth hourly break asking for a look at chop figures. Despite holding similar stacks, MLS20 and Salas stayed mum as the final table continued.
The willingness to continue play without a deal from MLS20 and Salas may draw from already making deep runs at this year's series. MLS20 might consider a label of "three-handed turbo ZOOM expert" after previously taking a deal heads-up in a similar three-max Event #20. Salas has a Super Tuesday victory under his belt along with nearly making the Event #30 final table, finishing in 12th.
Within ten minutes of the new hour a nasty river cooler would bring us to heads-up play. MLS20 gained a small chip-lead and with the board showing A♦ 7♦ 2♦ A♥, MLS20 pushed all-in holding big slick A♣K♥. Salas slow played the flopped flush 6♦Q♦ hoping to get max-value but ended up with a bad beat story as the K♠ fell on the river. $24,699.22 was shipped to Salas in third-place as MLS20 was geared to not repeat the runner-up finish.
Seat 1: KKsuckAA (4152259 in chips)
Seat 2: MLS20 (18767741 in chips)
Exactly one week ago MLS20 was heads-up for the Event #20 with a deal in place but sitting at a slight chip disadvantage. This time MLS20 held the pole position looking to close it out quickly by burying KKsuckAA with a barrage of pre-flop shoves.
KKsuckAA was bobbing and weaving like Canelo and Golovkin will be tomorrow night, looking for an opening to change the momentum. Even with a double-up KKsuckAA was not able to keep up with MLS20's fury as this match was called by TKO in eight minutes.
With MLS20 holding a 16.7 million to 6.2 million chip-lead KKsuckAA would three-bet all-in pre-flop holding 3♥A♥. MLS20 could taste victory after calling and flipping up J♥A♣. A lack of hearts and only one wheel card 8♣ 4♣ K♦ T♣ 7♥ gave MLS20 the final push in winning the WCOOP 2017 Event #43 title and $74,098.39!
