World Cup of Poker announces team captains
The World Cup of Poker VII finalists now know who will be leading their teams in the fight for national pride and big money.
The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure will again play host to the live final of the World Cup of Poker (WCP) at Atlantis Casino in January. Last year, Chinese Taipei snagged the title after a thrilling heads-up finale against Croatia. This year it will be Argentina, Philippines, the UK, Spain, Slovakia, Italy, France, Ukraine and the USA battling it out for the $100,000 first prize.
Slovakia's team for this seventh annual WCP contest will be led by Team PokerStars Pro's newest member Dag Palovic while EPT San Remo champion Liv Boeree will make her debut WCP appearance heading up the UK team. Argentina's captain is Jose "Nacho" Barbero who has won four major titles in 2010 while the Philippines will benefit from the leadership of 2009 APT champion Neil Arce. Team PokerStars Pro Juan Manuel Pastor will lead Spain, Luca Pagano Italy and Arnaud Mattern will take the helm for France. NAPT and Partouche champion Vanessa Selbst will make her WCP debut leading the USA and EPT Kyiv runner-up Alexander Dovzhenko will captain the Ukraine team.
All the qualifiers have been involved in a tough slog to win their place in the sun. Players from 56 countries from all over the world kicked off the contest in November and the finalists - a mix of Tournament Leader Board winners and qualifiers - have already won themselves a pretty good prize - a trip to the Bahamas to stay at the spectacular Atlantis Casino.
The WCP will kick off with preliminary SNG and heads-up events on January 14. The outcome will determine each team's starting stack for the final itself will takes place the next day. The final will be a 'Tag Team' event where all team members rotate in and out of play until one team takes overall victory.
To finish things off in style, and for the first time in World Cup of Poker history, all players that tried to qualify via the Stage I $1 and 1 FPP routes for the eventual winning team will be invited to play a $100,000 online freeroll. This tournament will take place on January 30.
