Chip and a Chair took chewonchewy to Victory in May 8 Women's Sunday
Online poker has become a staple in many women's lives, an activity that not only brings enjoyment but the thrill of competition and the hope of financial success. But despite their love for the game, other events can preclude their desire to play poker. May 8 was celebrated by many for its designation as Mother's Day, which drew a number of women to their families instead of the PokerStars tables. In addition, some players were in Madrid for the EPT Grand Final and the PokerStars Women Live event. It was a busy weekend.
With that in mind, the overall numbers for the weekly Women's Sunday tournament were down slightly from previous weeks, though the prize pool still eclipsed the $7K guarantee by a sizable number:
Total players: 190
Prize pool: $9,500.00
Paid finishers: 27
Two players who were in Madrid but found a reliable internet connection to play the Women's Sunday were Team PokerStars Pros Liv Boeree and Fatima Moreira de Melo. There was a $50 bounty riding on each player's head, as happens every week in this event.
Both women experienced a roller coaster ride throughout the tournament, but Fatima had perhaps the most turbulent trip.Ultimately, she was crippled by pokerart777, and her last 367 chips went all-in with A-5 but lost to the T-8 of pokerart777, who made a straight on the board. Pokerart777 also collected the $50 bounty for eliminating Fatima Moreira de Melo.
Liv had a better ride but eventually fell to pkwo when A-Q was beat by the Q-T of hearts held by pkwo. The board of K-K-J-4-9 made a straight and eliminated Liv Boeree (pictured below) in 71st place. Pkwo grabbed the $50 bounty.
The remainder of the field continued on, and the money bubble burst about 2 hours and 20 minutes into the tournament. MacHugh37 was the unfortunate bubble player, leaving mtt01 as the first to cash for $95.00 today.
Action continued through the better part of the second hour of play before the final table bubble was at hand. And it all happened rather quickly when raffn pushed all-in with A♦6♣ against the 3♦3♠ of talonchick. The board ended that race with Q♥9♠2♣3♥4♠, and the set of threes eliminated raffn in tenth place with $166.25 to show for it.
Talonchick grabs strong lead for final table
Quicker than in past weeks, the final table was set in the last moments of Level 15, with blinds at 1,000/2,000 and a 200 ante. The starting chip counts were as follows:
Seat 1: spoonface (88,755 in chips)
Seat 2: FaBluffy (51,794 in chips)
Seat 3: Teresita82 (41,491 in chips)
Seat 4: fawn0 (29,298 in chips)
Seat 5: Lizetta (33,594 in chips)
Seat 6: princini23 (60,949 in chips)
Seat 7: talonchick (130,680 in chips)
Seat 8: chewonchewy (74,053 in chips)
Seat 9: MLHMLH99 (59,386 in chips)
Players were expectedly cautious at the start of the last table, as they took a few hands to gather their strategies. "Raise it and take it" was the mantra for the first few rounds.
Finally, fawn0 doubled through princini23, and some other big pots began to develop. Princini23 doubled through chewonchewy, and the latter did the same through talonchick.
After nearly 45 minutes of play, the first elimination was at hand. It happened when Teresita82 moved all-in with A♠4♥, fawn0 came over the top all-in with K♠K♣, and chewonchewy called both with A♦Q♣. The board came 8♣4♠J♠7♦J♦, and fawn0 collected all of the chips to more than double. Teresita82 was out in ninth place with $190.00 in prize money.
Lizetta was soon at risk with 7♦7♠, and spoonface was along for the ride with K♥8♥. The race took a quick turn with the K♦9♥6♦ flop, and the K♣ turn gave spoonface the trip kings. The 3♥ on the river ended the tournament for Lizetta, who walked away with $285.00 for eighth place.
FaBluffy pushed her 12K stack all-in with Q♣9♥ only to find out that MLHMLH99 woke up to A♠A♣ in the big blind. The flop of 5♠6♠8♦ brought straight possibilities, but the 4♦ and K♠ finished it off with the aces holding up. FaBluffy was gone in seventh place with $380.00.
The comeback of chewonchewy
Chewonchewy was very short and tripled up to stay in the game, then doubled through talonchick and again through fawn0. A few hands later, a double through princini23 pushed chewonchewy out of the short-stacked position of the remaining six players, and the "run good" was officially on for chewonchewy:
MLHMLH99 also managed a double-up through princini23, leaving the latter on the shortest stack. And it was princini23 who moved all-in next with 7♠6♠, and spoonface called with K♦9♠ from the big blind. The board produced T♥A♠T♦5♥2♦, leaving princini23 with the worse hand and eliminated in sixth place with $475.00.
Chewonchewy took her game a step further by calling the all-in reraise of MLHMLH99. Chewonchewy showed A♣A♠, which dominated the A♦9♦ of MLHMLH99. And the board did nothing to change the standings when it came J♥5♠7♠T♥4♥. MLHMLH99 departed in fifth place with $570.00.
Original chip leader talonchick tweeted during four-handed play that she was getting run over by the chip leader - chewonchewy - who was down to only a few chips a short time before. Talonchick finally moved all-in with 9♥9♦, and spoonface called with A♠Q♦. The flop of J♥A♣A♥ brought trip aces and an "oh crap" comment from talonchick, and the 7♠ turn and 4♦ river ended her run for the title. Talonchick, who finished third in the April 10 Women's Sunday, left in fourth place today with $831.25.
Fawn0 was the next to make an attempt and did it with A♦3♥. Chewonchewy reraised all-in to isolate, which worked, with A♣Q♥. The board of 5♣K♥T♥8♠2♥ left fawn0 with $1,116.25 for the third place finish.
Australia versus UK in final battle
A few levels before heads-up, it would have been impossible to predict that chewonchewy would be in the final match. But a grand series of double-ups and solid run of cards made it so. The two started their battle with these counts:
Seat 1: spoonface (299,011 in chips)
Seat 8: chewonchewy (270,989 in chips)
It didn't take long for chewonchewy to find her way into the chip lead, and minutes later, the two became engaged in a preflop raising war until spoonface's tournament was at risk. Chewonchewy showed Q♣Q♥, and spoonface turned over A♠J♥. The board of T♣7♠6♥7♦3♣ allowed the queens to hold, and spoonface was out in second place with $1,472.50.
Chewonchewy of Australia came back from the lowest point of the final table to win the tournament. For the comeback and the weekly Women's Sunday title, not to mention $2,042.50 in prize money, a hearty congratulations to chewonchewy!
