Germany's BJ_Berlin Bests Women's Sunday Field for $2,454 Payday

Sunday Special corner logo.jpgThe first weekend in November ushered in the holiday season and a look toward the end of 2011. But female poker players around the world saw November 6 as another Sunday and another chance to compete in the weekly $55 Women's Sunday on PokerStars.

Since the guarantee for the Women's Sunday was raised to $10,000 only a few weeks ago, player registration has been on an incline, pushing the actual prize pools even higher. This week was no different, as hundreds of women took to the tables for women-only poker.

The final numbers this week were:

Total players: 240
Prize pool: $12,000.00
Paid finishers: 36

Of the field that boasted of some of the best female players in poker, there were three wearing the PokerStars logo next to their names as members of Team PokerStars Pro. Celina Lin was the first to exit, though, giving her opponent the $50 bounty as she exited in 146th place. Spain's Ana Marquez hit the virtual rail soon after in 131st place, and the UK's Liv Boeree was the last of them in competition until she departed in 111th place.

Three $50 bounties were dispersed, but all of the remaining players were eyeing the money bubble that would allow the top 36 to be paid. And a bit into the third hour of play, the bubble burst due to the unfortunate elimination of Phantomes124 in 37th place. Luzzzy of Germany, two-time Women's Sunday champion, was the first to cash today for $90 in 36th place, and play moved forward.

Just into the fourth hour of action, two tables were in play with the final table on tap. It was RoxanaBerar who moved all-in, and original raiser BASSTER22 called with A♦K♠. roxanaBerar showed 3♣2♠, but the board of Q♥T♣K♦8♥A♥ gave BASSTER22 two pair and the pot. RoxanaBerar exited in tenth place with $192.00.

Durrr085 dominates at the start of action

Level 18 welcomed players to blinds of 2,000/4,000 and a 400 ante. They started the final table with these chip counts:

BJ_Berlin doubled through durrr085, and BASSTER22 climbed to take a solid second place on the leaderboard.

Xenapoker sought some action and raised from the small blind, and lazygrrrl called all-in from the big blind. Lazygrrrl showed A♣A♦ for the potential double-up, and Xenapoker had K♥8♣. But the flop of J♥8♥K♣ changed everything by giving Xenapoker two pair, and the 6♣ turn and 3♣ river finished the hand by cracking aces. Lazygrrrl exited in ninth place with $228.00.

Three hands later, MadameKramer and Xenapoker got involved in a hand that started with a raise and call. The flop came 2♦9♥J♣, at which point MadameKramer pushed all-in with A♣T♦. Xenapoker called with A♥J♥ with top pair, beating the ace-high of MadameKramer. The 7♦ and 9♠ brought a pair of nines for both players, but MadameKramer had to bid the table adieu and take home $300.00 for the eighth place finish.

BASSTER22 raised all-in for more than 77.5K from middle position, and moenik30 called all-in from the small blind with 9♠9♦. BASSTER22 showed K♠T♣, and the advantage was flipped with the 7♦T♠J♥ flop. The Q♦ came on the turn, followed by a 2♦ on the river, and moenik30 had to leave in seventh place with $420.00.

BJ_Berlin doubled through BASSTER22 to stay in action, and another one two hands later looked like this:

Ira_161 and LaskaMagic got involved with Xenapoker in the small blind to see a 5♥9♥T♠ flop. LastaMagic bet, and Ira_161 raised all-in. Xenapoker check-folded, and LaskaMagic called all-in with K♣T♥ for top pair. But Ira_161 showed 9♦9♠ for the flopped set, which held up to the K♥ and A♠. LaskaMagic departed in sixth place with $540.00.

Four hands later, BASSTER22 raised from the small blind, and Xenapoker reraised all-in from the big blind. BASSTER22 called for the remainder of her chips with 9♠6♥, but Xenapoker had the better hand with A♦7♣. The board came 5♠3♣5♥4♠J♠, and the ace-high worked with the fives on the board to eliminate BASSTER22 in fifth place with $696.00.

Ira_161 risked her tournament with A♠T♦ but happened to come up against BJ_Berlin holding K♣K♦. The pocket pair only improved on the 3♥T♣Q♣3♠4♣, and the better two pair eliminated Ira_161 in fourth place with $1,020.00.

Three-handed play went on until former chip leader durrr085 made her push with A♣J♠. Xenapoker reraised all-in from the small blind with A♠A♦ to isolate, and BJ_Berlin did fold from the big blind. The pocket aces remained the best hand as the board showed 2♠3♣T♥7♠Q♣, and durrr085 took third place and $1,356.00 in prize money.

Strong heads-up opponents

The final two players both displayed tenacity and aggression throughout the final table, and they began their face-off with the following chip counts:

Seat 1: Xenapoker (456,676 in chips)
Seat 3: BJ_Berlin (263,324 in chips)

BJ_Berlin took some significant pots and quickly climbed into the lead, even achieving a 2-to-1 lead over Xenapoker at one point.

Finally, the two players got involved in a hand to see a Q♥5♣7♦ flop. BJ_Berlin bet, and Xenapoker check-raised. Another raise from BJ_Berlin led to Xenapoker moving all-in with Q♦J♦ and top pair. BJ_Berlin called with 8♥6♦ and the straight draw. The J♦ on the turn gave Xenapoker two pair and a better chance for a double-up, but the 9♣ dropped on the river to complete BJ_Berlin's straight. Xenapoker had to settle for second place and $1,800.00.
