MASSIEL of Mexico Masters the June 12 Women's Sunday
Last week, we mentioned that there were going to be some FPP qualifiers added to give women more chances to qualify for $55 seats in the Women's Sunday event. Evidently, when we said "some," we meant "many." The qualifiers scattered in pink lettering this morning in the satellite listings were all over the place!
(For those unfamiliar, FPPs are Frequent Player Points that are accumulated through regular cash game and tournament action on PokerStars. And satellites sometimes only require a buy-in of those points in order to qualify for seats in tournaments, allowing players to save their actual cash bankrolls and use those points for entries instead.)
There were 500 FPP turbo qualifiers set up for Friday, June 10; Saturday, June 11; and today. But the tournament organizers decided to add numerous other qualifiers this morning, some for 700 FPPs and others for the planned 500 FPPs. Since many players were not expecting so many of those opportunities this morning, some of the qualifiers were cancelled due to insufficient turnout, but others went on as planned, and many players turned their points into $55 seats.
So this is fair warning. Accumulate those points during the week, and be on the lookout for more FPP qualifiers next weekend!
Speaking of the Women's Sunday, this week's final numbers came in as follows:
Total players: 190
Prize pool: $9,500.00
Paid finishers: 27
As the second hour played on, nearly half the field had been eliminated, though action slowed a bit with the money bubble as something to strive for.
Along the way, one of the members of Team PokerStars, Katja Thater of Germany, played along with a $50 bounty on her head for any player who was able to knock her out of the tournament. And just as she changed tables about one hour and 45 minutes into the game, she lost her short stack and busted in 55th place.
Play continued for the rest of the women, though only five tables - soon reduced to four - entered the third hour of action. With only 27 players getting paid, eliminations went quickly, and soon it was straightwalk who exited on the bubble, allowing sandracps to cash in 27th place for $95.00.
With two tables remaining, several players began to exit who found their way into the tournament through a satellite. Eva72, who won a ticket in the $5.50 Last Chance Turbo event, left in 16th place with $118.75, and 11th place finisher arimateia210 won $166.25 after qualifying through an $11 Hyper Turbo this morning.
During hand-for-hand play, sia9999 decided to move all-in from the big blind with K♦7♦, but original raiser MRS-SIMS-OK called with K♥J♦, which developed into trip jacks on the 9♣8♥J♠J♣Q♦ board. Sia9999 departed in tenth place with $166.25.
MASSIEL amasses strong chip lead
The final table was set toward the end of Level 18, with blinds at 2,000/4,000 and a 400 ante. The starting chip counts were:
Seat 1: BlG P0CKET$ (75,800 in chips)
Seat 2: LeeSandra (63,896 in chips)
Seat 3: cep27 (24,058 in chips)
Seat 4: fatma&hakan (38,911 in chips)
Seat 5: MASSIEL (134,629 in chips)
Seat 6: paminacan (84,026 in chips)
Seat 7: Kogle380 (29,530 in chips)
Seat 8: Sw33ty-D (32,657 in chips)
Seat 9: MRS-SIMS-OK (86,493 in chips)
On the third hand of final table action, short-stacked Kogle380 made the all-in move with 7♠7♣, but chip leader MASSIEL called with A♦T♦. The race was still undecided on the 9♠3♥Q♦ flop, but the A♣ turn and T♣ river gave MASSIEL two pair. Kogle380, who final tabled the April 10th Women's Sunday and finished fifth, had to accept ninth place today and the $190.00 that went with it.
Just when play could be construed as cautious, the aggression kicked in. Sw33ty-D doubled through cep27, and another big hand followed.
Cep27 was very short-stacked and pushed 1,701 chips all-in. Fatma&hakan then reraised all-in, and MASSIEL called both players with A♦J♣. Cep27 was on the line with K♥4♣, and fatma&hakan showed K♦7♠. The flop of 2♥T♣4♥ gave cep27 a pair and the possibility of a double-up, and the 2♦ didn't change that. But the 7♣ dropped on the river, giving the best two pair to fatma&kahan, who scooped the entire pot. Cep27, who finished eighth in the May 15 Women's Sunday, was out in eighth again, this time with $285.00.
Paminacan started a subsequent hand with a raise, which was called by MRS-SIMS-OK. But when MASSIEL reraised from the big blind, paminacan responded with an all-in move. MRS-SIMS-OK folded, and MASSIEL called 64,326 more with K♥K♠. Paminacan turned over A♥7♥, and the board came T♠7♠K♣2♣T♥ to give MASSIEL the full house. Paminacan left in seventh place with $380.00.
MRS-SIMS-OK doubled through MASSIEL in a battle of the capitalized names, and Sw33ty-D doubled through fatma&hakan.
BIG P0CKET$ made her move with only 25,300 chips holding 6♠6♦, and LeeSandra called from the small blind with A♣8♣. The race was over on the Q♣T♦Q♥ flop, and the Q♠ and 7♥ appeared to solidify the winning hand for LeeSandra. BIG P0CKET$ took home $475.00 for the sixth place finish.
Five for fighting
The final five not only had a great battle in progress, but the women commented on how exciting it was in the chat box. They seemed to enjoy the game quite a bit.
After quite a while of play and heading toward Level 22, players finally decided to make bigger moves. When fatma&hakan opened with an all-in raise, LeeSandra called all-in with A♥9♦ from the big blind, but fatma&hakan showed a dominating A♦K♠. The board of T♠7♣J♣6♠7♠ left the ace and king kicker in play, which pushed LeeSandra out in fifth place with $570.00.
Two hands later, a battle of the blinds ensued when MASSIEL raised, Sw33ty-D reraised all-in with 2♥2♣, and MASSIEL called with J♠5♦. The first four cards to be dealt looked promising for a double-up - Q♦6♠9♠4♣ - but the 5♥ hit on the river to give MASSIEL the better pair. Sw33ty-D headed to the rail in fourth place with $831.25.
The following double-up of MRS-SIMS-OK through fatma&hakan changed the standings of the final three:
Fatma&hakan moved all-in on the very next hand with K♥Q♠, but MASSIEL had A♦5♠ and found two pair on the 2♥J♦A♥9♣5♦ board. Fatma&hakan, who won her seat into this tournament in a 500 FPP satellite, exited in third place with $1,116.25.
ALL-CAPS SCREEN NAMES PLAY HEADS-UP
The final two players started their match with these chip counts:
Seat 5: MASSIEL (353,384 in chips)
Seat 9: MRS-SIMS-OK (216,616 in chips)
MRS-SIMS-OK came on strong and eventually took the chip lead, and MASSIEL lost that lead for the first time at the final table. But MASSIEL came back with a vengeance, dominating several rounds of play until the lead was back in her hands.
And this hand gave MASSIEL the majority of the chips in play:
Three hands after, MRS-SIMS-OK pushed all-in with Q♥4♦, and MASSIEL called with K♦5♣. The dealer gave them a board of A♠T♦J♥6♠3♣, and the kicker played. MRS-SIMS-OK departed in second place after winning her seat in the Last $11 Qualifier today. She won $1,472.50 for the finish.
MASSIEL of Mexico became this week's Women's Sunday champion and received $2,042.50 for the victory. Congratulations!
