Rapuncel<3, Rapuncel<3 of Russia won the July 3 Women's Sunday

Sunday Special corner logo.jpgIt's the first Sunday in July, and ... Wait, 2011 is half over? Please give me a moment to process.

Thanks. With that bit of information, it only seems fair to mention that there are still six months left in the Women's Poker League!

The PokerStars leagues offer women the chances for monthly prizes in the $.10 league or the $1.10, though some players compete in both! And the numbers continue to be tallied throughout the year. At the end of 2011, bigger cash prizes will be awarded to the top league finishers, and winners of both leagues will win PokerStars Women Live Event packages. That could mean a trip to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the European Poker Tour London, or the EPT Grand Final!

There's still plenty of time to accumulate points and get involved in the league for monthly and yearly prizes, not to mention bragging rights.

Today, however, we're tracking the $55 Women's Sunday tournament with its $7K guarantee. And when registration closed after the first hour of competition, the numbers were:

Total players: 176
Prize pool: $8,800.00
Paid finishers: 27

The Team PokerStars Pro in action today was Germany's Sandra Naujoks, and she did so with a $50 bounty on her head for anyone who could eliminate her from the tournament. She stood her ground with an average stack for the first hour of play, but she eventually put it at risk with A♣K♥ against the Q♠Q♣ of tatahod, and the board of 7♥6♣2♣4♥Q♥ only improved that pocket pair. Tatahod grabbed that $50 bounty, and Ms. Naujoks left the event in 121st place.

The rest of the field thinned as the second hour of action passed, and that left only five tables at the two-hour mark. And it took less than 45 minutes to work down to the last two tables and to the final table bubble.

Play was tense during hand-for-hand, and it wasn't until more than 10 minutes after kadsenvieh departed in 11th place that the next player was eliminated. It happened when short-stacked mybellule pushed all-in, and tatahod and SpringSmile both called. They checked the T♣Q♦5♠ flop and the 3♠ turn, but the A♣ on the river prompted a bet from SpringSmile and fold from tatahod. SpringSmile showed A♦K♣, which bested the A♠8♦ of mybellule, who exited in tenth place with $154.00.

SpringSmile grins about top spot in chip counts

As Level 17 was in full swing, with blinds of 1,500/3,000 and a 300 ante, players took their seats at the final table with these counts:

Seat 1: StarBucksOne (40,216 in chips)
Seat 2: lyubasha568 (19,502 in chips)
Seat 3: iris_tania (17,650 in chips)
Seat 4: sallymslb (24,572 in chips)
Seat 5: JACQUEV1 (72,836 in chips)
Seat 6: tatahod (87,871 in chips)
Seat 7: Rapuncel<3 (80,951 in chips)
Seat 8: nathine15 (70,992 in chips)
Seat 9: SpringSmile (113,410 in chips)

It didn't take long for the short stacks to make moves. Sallymslb successfully doubled through SpringSmile, and StarBucksOne doubled through tatahod to jump into the chip lead.

Iris_tania sought the same result and moved her short stack all-in preflop with A♥5♠. Rapuncel<3 called from the big blind with a dominating A♦J♠, and that hand only improved on the 2♠4♦7♣J♥Q♥ board. Iris_tania exited in ninth place with $176.00.

Nathine15 was the next at risk, putting her chips on the line preflop with A♠T♦. Rapuncel<3 called with K♦K♠, and the board brought nothing but additional cards to make a set and then full house when it came 4♠3♦2♣K♥2♠. Nathine15 had no choice but to leave in eighth place with $264.00.

The next in jeopardy was sallymslb, who moved all-in from early position with J♠T♠. SpringSmile reraised all-in to isolate, which worked, and showed K♠K♦. The kings held up to the 8♦A♥T♥Q♥4♣ board, and sallymslb - who won her seat in today's last $11 qualifier - departed in seventh place with $352.00.

Rapuncel<3 rises to the top

A few more double-ups were in order, as lyubasha568 did it through StarBucksOne and JACQUEV1 did it through SpringSmile, which is shown here. Meanwhile, Rapuncel<3 was on the rise in the biggest way.

Tatahod lost a great deal of momentum during final table action and finally pushed little more than 50K chips all-in with 4♠4♥. Rapuncel<3 called with T♥T♠, and the amazing flop came Q♣T♦T♣ for quad tens. The rest of the board ran out with 5♥ and 6♠ to make it official that tatahod would leave in sixth place with $440.00, on top of the $50 bounty for eliminating Sandra Naujoks earlier in the tournament.

With less than 40K, lyubasha568 tried for another double-up with A♣2♥, but SpringSmile called from the big blind with K♦Q♣. The flop of 8♥8♦5♣ was innocent enough, but the Q♥ on the turn gave SpringSmile two pair. The 4♠ on the river sent lyubasha568 - who qualified for the seat in the Last Chance $5.50 turbo earlier today - out in fifth place with $528.00.

StarBucksOne, who qualified today in a 700 FPP hyper turbo satellite, was anxious to gain some ground on her opponents. A double through Rapuncel<3 gave her hope. But StarBucksOne made another move soon after with 7♠6♠, only to be called by JACQUEV1 holding A♠J♣. The board of A♥4♥8♦9♥K♣ gave aces to JACQUEV1 and eliminated StarBucksOne in fourth place with $770.00.

Things moved rather quickly from there. SpringSmile pushed all-in for 225,668 chips with A♥A♠, and Rapuncel<3 called with 5♥5♠. But the board of T♣5♣8♦3♣6♣ gave Rapuncel<3 the set of fives. SpringSmile, who finished fourth in the April 24 Women's Sunday, improved with a third place finish and $1,034.00 this week.

Two players in two hands

The match started with these chip counts:

Seat 5: JACQUEV1 (120,682 in chips)
Seat 7: Rapuncel<3 (407,318 in chips)

It was over in super speed. The second hand of the battle saw JACQUEV1 move all-in with J♥8♣, and Rapuncel<3 called with A♠J♠. The flop of 6♦9♠J♦ gave both players jacks, but the 5♠ turn and T♦ river refused to give JACQUEV1 any further help, leaving her out in second place with $1,364.00.

Representing Russia, Rapuncel<3 won this week's Women's Sunday! With the title, she was awarded $1,892.00 for the victory. Congratulations!
