Romania's pescar_hoina pulls a win, Celina Lin takes fourth in Women's Sunday

Sunday Special corner logo.jpgLast week, there were 240 players registered for the Women's Sunday with three Team PokerStars Pros among them, which made for a $12,000 prize pool. Solid numbers for a tournament with a $10K guarantee and one that showed nearly continuous growth in 2011.

This week? The registration number jumped by more than 50 players, and the prize pool soared to nearly $15K. It should be no surprise that more women are stepping into the tournament arena, but the growth over the past year, especially in PokerStars Women events, has been impressive and indicative of the changing times in poker. Women have long been a force at the tables, but they are now becoming more involved, playing higher stakes, and eventually becoming pro players. It's an exciting time for women in poker!

With that, let's take a look at those aforementioned numbers for this week's Women's Sunday:

Total players: 296
Prize pool: $14,800.00
Paid finishers: 45

Among the sizeable crowd, several players brought their red spade PokerStars logos, along with $50 bounties for anyone who could knock them out of the tournament.

The first to go was Team Online's Adrienne "talonchick" Rowsome, who arrived home from vacation just in time to get in on the action. Sadly, though, she finished in 190th place. Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree decided to make a run at it, but she finished in 156th place. Team Pro Vanessa Selbst made it into the top 100 players but finished in 97th place, and Ana Marquez of Spain was eliminated in 66th place.

Well into the second hour, though, the last Team Pro standing was Celina Lin, who was going strong as the field dwindled to four, then three, and finally two tables.

Two tables were soon reduced to only 10 players, and hand-for-hand action led to the final table. After several minutes of tension and quite a few double-ups, it was Afi*Love who moved all-in from the big blind with 8♥5♦, but original raiser jamjars69 called with A♠K♠. That hand only improved to top pair on the K♣5♣T♦7♦4♥ board, and Afi*Love exited in tenth place with $222.00.

Team Pro Celina Lin leads the action

More than 3.5 hours into the tournament, the final table was set in Level 20, with blinds at 3,000/6,000 and a 600 ante. Players started with these stacks:

Seat 1: pescar_hoina (97,355 in chips)
Seat 2: mrsbeer (49,054 in chips)
Seat 3: Mamenmiriam (79,628 in chips)
Seat 4: balticblonde (49,720 in chips)
Seat 5: 1time4meee (62,916 in chips)
Seat 6: claufrancho (45,152 in chips)
Seat 7: jamjars69 (185,190 in chips)
Seat 8: Sharp1Blade (99,718 in chips)
Seat 9: Celina Lin (219,267 in chips)

On the third hand, mrsbeer doubled through pescar_hoina to stay in the game, and then Mamenmiriam doubled through Sharp1Blade.

Then the all-ins became more frequent. Balticblonde moved all-in from middle position, and 1time4meee reraised all-in as the next player to move. Sharp1Blade thought for a bit from the small blind before calling both players, and Celina Lin folded from the big blind. Sharp1Blade had A♥J♦, 1time4meee showed A♦K♥, and balticblonde had K♠J♠. The board came J♣3♣7♣9♠A♥, and 1time4meee nearly tripled up with the pair of aces. Balticblonde ended her tournament in ninth place with $259.00.

A few hands later, claufrancho pushed all-in for her last 32K with A♣Q♥, and original raiser Celina Lin called holding A♦9♥. The flop of T♦J♦9♦ gave Celina Lin the pair of nines and the diamond draw, while claufrancho picked up a straight draw. But the J♥ and 7♣ only helped Celina Lin with a second pair, and claufrancho was eliminated in eighth place with $355.20.

Pescar_hoina puts on the pressure

Sharp1Blade doubled back through Mamenmiriam, but the former remained on the short stack. Two hands later, Sharp1Blade moved all-in again, and pescar_hoina called with 9♦9♠. Sharp1Blade showed A♠8♠, but it was pescar_hoina's hand that improved on the K♥J♠9♥4♦J♦ to a full house. Sharp1Blade exited in seventh place with $503.20.

On the very next hand, pescar_hoina doubled through jamjars69 to take a substantial lead over the remainder of the players. It happened like this:

Jamjars69 never recovered from the double by pescar_hoina and soon moved all-in from early position with T♠T♦. It just so happened that Mamenmiriam reraised all-in from the small blind with A♣A♠, and the big blind folded. The board came 3♥4♦2♥K♥3♦, and jamjars69 responded with "nooooooooooooooo" in the chat box as she was ousted in sixth place, which was worth $651.20.

Team Pro out in fourth

Pescar_hoina raised from first position, and 1time4meee reraised all-in for 39,063 from the small blind. Celina Lin then reraised all-in for 211,677 chips from the big blind, and pescar_hoina called both players. The hands were:

Celina Lin: A♠8♠
pescar_hoina: Q♠Q♥
1time4meee: T♥T♠

The board came 3♠9♣K♥9♠7♣, and pescar_hoina's two pair eliminated two players, 1time4meee in fifth place with $843.60, and Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin in fourth with $1,221.00.

Mrsbeer promptly doubled up twice, both times through pescar_hoina, and Mamenmiriam also doubled through pescar_hoina.

But Mamenmiriam was ready to move again and did it with 8♣8♠. Pescar_hoina called from the big blind with J♥T♠ and hit the 6♥J♦9♠ to make a pair of jacks. None of the outs for Mamenmiriam hit when the board finished with K♣A♣, and Mamenmiriam had to leave in third place with $1,628.00.

Pescar_hoina dominates heads-up

The final two players engaged in battle with these counts:

Seat 1: pescar_hoina (738,768 in chips)
Seat 2: mrsbeer (149,232 in chips)

It only took 10 hands for mrsbeer to find a workable hand, and she moved all-in with Q♠5♦. Pescar_hoina called with 4♦4♣, and that pair held up to the 8♠3♣T♥6♣7♦ board. Mrsbeer took second place and $2,146.00.

Congratulations to pescar_hoina of Romania, who won the Women's Sunday tournament and the $2,863.80 in prize money that went with it.
