Yurchenkova takes over and wins the October 23 Women's Sunday

Sunday Special corner logo.jpgA new chapter in the Women's Sunday tournaments is upon us. It shows what happens when women come to the tables in force, and growth becomes inevitable.

Last week, we held a special edition of the Women's Sunday with a $15K guarantee. So many women turned out for the tournament that the prize pool soared to $23,150 with 463 players. That success showed how popular the tournament has become, and we hope to see an ever-increasing turnout as time goes on.

For now, we have raised the guarantee to $10K going forward. And there are ways to get into the action all week long, with numerous satellites and qualifiers, even hyper turbos, so that players can qualify for much less than the $55 buy-in. Check the website for information.

Already, the $10K guarantee was surpassed in the first week:

Total players: 252
Prize pool: $12,600.00
Paid finishers: 36

Action started with several members of Team PokerStars at the tables, though Friend of PokerStars Charlotte "Sjlot" Van Brabander was the first to exit. Soon after, Team Online's Adrienne "talonchick" Rowsome was eliminated, and Team Pro Ana Marquez followed.

Players who eliminated the aforementioned pros were each awarded their $50 bounties.

Moving on, it wasn't until the 2.5-hour mark that the money bubble burst, leaving the top 36 women guaranteed a minimum $94.50 payout. And the field was reduced to two tables about 20 minutes later.

The elimination of played01 in 11th place launched the final two tables into hand-for-hand play, and a few hands later, elanugras moved all-in from the small blind. Sweetpea382 called from the big blind with A♦J♥, and elanugras showed A♠J♦. What looked like a chopped pot changed when the board came 3♥A♥K♥9♥4♦ to give sweetpea382 the flush. Elanugras departed in tenth place with $201.60.

MrNilsson manages the starting chip lead

The final table began in Level 18, with blinds of 2,000/4,000 and a 400 ante. Starting chip counts were as follows:

Seat 1: R@!$er666 (126,260 in chips)
Seat 2: MyAnnit (23,424 in chips)
Seat 3: ashieeee (137,438 in chips)
Seat 4: darkbu$ter (109,730 in chips)
Seat 5: Yurchenkova (37,689 in chips)
Seat 6: MrNiIsson (143,433 in chips)
Seat 7: Junotooth (41,100 in chips)
Seat 8: sweetpea382 (93,372 in chips)
Seat 9: aytuas (43,554 in chips)

The very first hand saw MyAnnit double through aytuas and get off the short stack.

Aytuas never recovered, though, finally making a move from the button with K♠5♥. R@!$er666 called from the small bind with A♣T♥ and improved on the already-winning hand by making two pair on the 2♠7♣Q♥T♦A♦ board. Aytuas left in ninth place with $239.40.

Junotooth then doubled through MrNilsson, who no longer held the chip lead. It was R@!%ser666 who jumped into that top spot, followed by ashieeee, leaving MrNilsson in third place out of eight players.

Action calmed for quite a few rounds, as raise-and-take-it moves prevailed in most cases. MrNilsson then took a pot worth more than 85K from ashieeee to regain the chip lead. It was anyone's game, and they were playing it cautiously.

But sweetpea382 took a bit risk that paid off with the chip lead:

Junotooth looked for her double and pushed all-in for 21,200 from early position with K♦Q♦. Yurchenkova called from the big blind with 8♥7♥, and the 2♦J♦J♣7♣6♠ board gave her two pair. Junotooth was eliminated in eighth place with $315.00.

Early chip leaders fall, Yurchenkova takes over

Ashieeee was unable to gain momentum from the earlier hit and moved all-in from the small blind with 9♠9♥. Original raiser Yurchenkova called with A♠K♣, and though the flop of J♥2♦T♠ was innocent enough, the K♠ hit on the turn to give Yurchenkova the top pair. The 3♠ on the river knocked ashieeee out of the tournament in seventh place with $441.00.

On the very next hand, Yurchenkova showed strength with a preflop all-in move from the small blind. MrNilsson called all-in from the big blind with A♠5♠, and Yurchenkova showed Q♦7♠. But the board of 8♠K♣6♣7♣3♠ again turned the pair for Yurchenkova, leaving MrNilsson out in sixth place with $567.00.

When darkbu$ter made her move from the button with A♠Q♦, Yurchenkova was again there to call, this time from the small blind with T♣T♦. The pocket pair held up to the K♠2♦9♠4♥5♠ board, and darkbu$ter was busted in fifth place with $730.80.

MyAnnit was on a stack of less than 80K and pushed all-in with 7♦7♦. Guess who made the call? It was Yurchenkova, of course! She called with A♦K♠, and the flop of 2♦T♦K♣ gave her top pair again. The 4♠ and 3♣ finished the board to send MyAnnit packing in fourth place with $1,071.00.

Four hands later, short-stacked sweetpea382 pushed all-in with K♦3♣, and R@!$er666 was the caller holding 9♠9♣. That pair only improved on the 8♣2♥9♦6♥5♦ board to a set of nines, eliminating sweetpea382 in third place, which was worth $1,423.80.

Can Yurchenkova be stopped?

The final two players began their heads-up match with these counts:

Seat 1: R@!$er666 (237,244 in chips)
Seat 5: Yurchenkova (518,756 in chips)

Yurchenkova had a dominating lead as the battle began, but R@!$er666 had no intention of going out easily.

This double-up for R@!Ser666 changed the feel of the match:

From there, R@!$er666 continued to dominate, taking several big pots to put the chip stacks nearly even. she was only about 23K behind Yurchenkova when the last hand took place. It started with a raise from Yurchenkova and call from R@!$er666 to see a flop of 6♦6♠Q♦. Yurchenkova bet, and R@!$er666 check-raised all-in. Yurchenkova called with A♥A♠, which made for a better two pair than the Q♣T♠ of R@!$er666. The 2♦ turn and J♦ river ended the hand and the tournament, with R@!$er666 settling for second place and $1,890.00.

Yurchenkova of Russia won the Women's Sunday, and she was awarded $2,576.70 to go with the title. Congratulations!
