Women's Sunday: luzzzy gets her hat trick as five attempt a repeat

For the second consecutive week, PokerStars crowned a three-time Women's Sunday champion. Germany's luzzzy won her first Women's Sunday on March 27, 2011 and claimed her second crown less than seven months later, defeating Melanie "Callisto 5" Weisner heads-up in a special edition that carried a $15k guarantee and awarded a nearly $4,400 first-place prize. However, in order to get that hat trick, luzzzy had to plow through a final table that included four previous champions. Also going for repeat wins were CzaRnaPL, StarlingC, ShowMustG00n and Cosita Rica, who all won their first titles last year. Even crazier? Eight of the final nine players had been at a Women's Sunday final table before.

208 players bought in to this week's Women's Sunday, the prize pool topping out at $10,400. 36 places were paid with first place set to earn $2,126.80. Friend of PokerStars Charlotte "Sjlot" Van Brabander was this week's Red Spade bounty. Although she jumped out to an early chip lead, Isidora CdLL sent her to the rail in 54th place when her pocket queens held up against Van Brabander's A♠K♠.

Blinds were 800/1,600 on the final table bubble. Several players had grown short stacked including $oprixAA, who was no doubt happy to look down at T♠T♦ UTG. She opened for 3,679, Cosita Rica three-bet to 9,600 and $oprixAA called. The rest of $oprixAA's chips went in on the 8♠7♦3♣ flop, but her overpair was no match for Cosita Rica's K♥K♠. The turn and river fell the 5♦ and the 6♥, ending $oprixAA's run in tenth place.

CzRnaPL surges off the short stack

CzaRnaPL got off to a strong start, doubling to 44,400 when her K♦Q♦ turned a king vs. Cosita Rica's A♣J♠. Fournz, however, was not as fortunate. She three-bet shoved for her last 17,000 with pocket tens, only to run into chiccc_sthlm's pocket aces. Chiccc_sthlm turned top set and fournz was out in ninth place, earning $197.60.

StarlingC also got her turn for a double-up, her A♦9♥ rivering Broadway vs. CzaRnaPL's pocket eights. CzaRnaPL was reduced to 60,000 in chips, but picked up a 100k pot when she eliminated chiccc_sthlm in eighth place. The money went in on a 9♠4♠4♥ flop, CzaRnaPL's nines and fours besting chiccc_sthlm's fives and fours.

luzzzy stands alone

By now, luzzzy had quietly moved into the chip lead with 180,000 while ShowMustG00n slipped to 165,000. However, after a 129,000 pot, one would stand alone at the top. Luzzzy led off the action with a raise to 5,525 and ShowMustG00n three-bet to 12,500 from the small blind. Luzzzy called and they saw a 9♣5♦3♦ flop. ShowMustG00n continued for 18,211 and luzzzy smooth-called. When the A♥ fell on the turn, ShowMustG00n fired again, making it 31,790 to go. Again, luzzzy called. Both players checked the 2♣ on the river and luzzzy revealed T♥T♣, besting ShowMustG00n's flopped top pair with 8♣9♣. Luzzzy took a commanding chips lead with 246,000 while ShowMustG00n fell to 102,000.

Two outer times two

Two more short stacks doubled to stay alive, Isidora CdLL's T♥T♦ holding up against ShowMustG00n's A♥9♠ for a 63k pot while KaTee4ka's Q♠9♣ turned trip queens against luzzzy's K♣J♣. KaTee4ka doubled to 40,000 and got those chips in the middle a few hands later with K♠K♦. CzaRnaPL showed T♣T♥. KaTee4ka was good through the turn, but CzaRnaPL hit a two-outer on the river with the T♦ to send her home in seventh ($364.00).

On the very next deal, ShowMustG00n opened for 6,250 from UTG+1, luzzzy three-bet to 14,442 from the small blind and Cosita Rica moved all-in for 54,749 from the big. ShowMustG00n gave up her hand but luzzzy called, her T♦T♥ up against J♠J♣. Once again, pocket tens prevailed against an overpaid as luzzzy flopped top set and turned tens full of sevens. Cosita Rica was eliminated in sixth place, earning $468.00 for her finish.

luzzzy takes control

Meanwhile, StarlingC was still hanging in there with 35,000 in chips. Dealt A♦Q♠, she-open shoved from UTG+1 and CzaRnaPL called with 6♠6♥. StarlingC hit a queen on the flop and doubled to 75,000. CzaRnaPL still had 32 big blinds left after the hand, but got the in on the very next deal. CzaRnaPL's pocket jacks led luzzzy's unimproved A♦K♦ when the money went in on the turn, but luzzzy rivered an ace to end CzaRnaPL's run in fifth place ($603.20).

Curtain falls on ShowMustG00n, StarlingC

After eliminating CzaRnaPL, luzzzy rocketed to 394,500 in chips, her closest competitor Isidora CdLL sporting a 90,000 stack. ShowMustG00n was down to 72,000 and staked her last 18 big blinds on K♠Q♦. Luzzzy's A♣8♣ flopped an eight and turned two pair, eliminating ShowMustG00n in fourth place ($884.00).

StarlingC was the next to move in, open-shoving for 30,000 on the button with Q♠9♥. Isidora CdLL called from the small blind, her A♠6♠ holding up to send StarlingC home in third ($1,175.20).

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 6: Isidora CdLL (108,914 in chips)
Seat 9: luzzzy (515,086 in chips)

Luzzzy went in to heads-up play with a 5 to 1 chip advantage, but after a long series of small pots, IsidoraCdLL wrested away the chip lead. All the marbles went in pre flop, luzzzy four-bet shoving for 456,500 with A♥8♠ and Isidora CdLL calling with pocket nines. The nines held up and Isidora CdLL doubled to 334,000 while luzzzy fell to 290,000.

However, luzzzy didn't lose the lead for long. On the next hand, her T♣2♥ made two pair on the turn and she took down an 81,000 pot. Then, a few hands later, luzzzy flopped top pair and extracted three streets of value, reducing Isidora CdLL to only 100,000.

Less than five minutes later, IsidoraCdLL opened for a min-raise to 12,000. Luzzzy three-bet shoved for 508,000 with 7♦8♥ and Isidora CdLL called, revealing A♦K♣. If Isidora CdLL doubled here, she'd be right back in it with 230,000 in chips, but the flop fell 8♥6♦4♠, making luzzzy top pair. Luzzzy improved to two pair with the 7♠ turn and rivered the 8♣ to lock up her third Women's Sunday title with a full house.

Congratulations to luzzzy on her Women's Sunday three-peat! She banked $2,126.80 for the win, while runner-up Isidora CdLL earned $1,560.00.
