PCA 2013: Solid Start for Women's Event

The 10th Anniversary of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure wouldn't be complete without a ladies tournament, and Event 31 is it. It is a chance for PokerStars Women players to gather for a $1,000 buy-in No Limit Hold'em challenge that some (ahem, Vanessa Selbst) have described as the best ladies event of the year.

Today's action began with about 50 women in their seats and more venturing from the registration desk. All players are seated with a 10,000 starting stack of chips.

The first of many winners of the PS Live PCA satellites was Jan Combes of the UK, who plays as jamjars69. She certainly has Women's Event experience, having won the EPT Ladies Event in 2011 and finished fourth in the EPT Grand Final Ladies Event in 2012. She arrived at the PCA this year without her poker-playing son and made a vacation of it by adding a few extra days to her trip. She played some poker here in the Bahamas and cashed in a sit-n-go and a $300 turbo. The latter was "the highlight of the trip so far," citing "doing well against the men" as part of the fun. She's looking forward to playing well today.

Other qualifiers spotted at the beginning of the tournament included Daiva "balticblonde" Barauskaite and Kami "drkamikaze1" Chisholm.

Deb Qualey is here from Delaware in the United States. She's been coming for three years now, just for the Women's Event. "The first year we came, they did the boot camp with Vanessa Rousso and the yoga, and it really made us feel welcome and special," she told us. "We enjoyed it so much that we made a lot of friends and enjoy coming back. The physician by day final tabled the 2011 PCA Ladies Event and finished fifth, and she looks forward to playing each year. "This is just a hobby," she insisted, though a very serious poker face at the table indicates a bit more.

Friend of PokerStars Charlotte "Sjlot" Van Brabander was in her seat when play began, and a long list of other familiar faces were scattered about. PS Women writer Jen Shahade and friend Jamie Kerstetter were in action, as was poker reporter Lynn Gilmartin.

U.S. reality television star and regular poker player Trishelle Cannatella took her seat, as did longtime poker writer Katie Lindsay. Last year's champion, Kathy Saraf, is here as well, looking for back-to-back wins.
