PokerStars Macau at Casino Grand Lisboa is hosting the Macau Poker Cup: Red Dragon from August 6-14 and Asia's biggest room is absolutely buzzing with anticipation of the Red Dragon main event which begins Day 1A on Thursday.
The Red Dragon runs from August 11-14 and boasts a HKD $3,000,000 guarantee. Averaging a record 478 players in 2011, the legendary event is expected to easily surpass the guarantee and award approximately HKD $1,000,000 to the eventual winner.
Adding to the excitement is the recent announcement of Danny McDonagh becoming the first non-player to be inducted into the Australian Poker Hall of Fame.
Generally regarded as the leading Tournament Director authority in the Asia-Pacific, McDonagh works officially as the PokerStars Director of Live Operations. His impact on poker tournaments is unquestioned as the biggest events in the region all bear his signature -- this includes the Aussie Millions, Asia Pacific Poker Tour, and Macau Poker Cup series at PokerStars Macau.
McDonagh remarked, "I'm honoured to be the first administrator in the Aussie Hall of Fame alongside such select company like Joe Hachem and Jeff Lisandro. When I began my poker career as a tournament director at Crown Casino, the team was running a $1,000 event that eventually became the Aussie Millions. I mean, who would have known that it would become the international icon that it is today.
PokerStars reached out to me and offered me an opportunity to do what I love, which is being on the floor, but also have control on key decision making for tournaments throughout the Asia-Pacific. That really appealed to me and keeps me motivated.
It only seems appropriate that Leo Boxell, whom I've known since the beginning of my poker career, was inducted into the Hall of Fame the same year. Amazingly, this announcement came right after APPT Melbourne where Leo won at Crown Casino.
I love working with the PokerStars Macau team and hope to not only replicate the Aussie Millions experience but eventually exceed that success. This week's Macau Poker Cup is another great success story about poker growth in a new region paired with an amazing venue at the Grand Lisboa."
"It's a very deserving award for a guy like Danny who never looks for recognition." praised PokerStars Country Manager Fred Leung. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with Danny and sometimes the two of us forget the early stages which were extremely challenging. Surely, PokerStars Macau will have bigger buy-in events in the future but the MPC Red Dragon was the first project we worked on together and experiencing the Red Dragon's growth from a very modest 33 players to 509 player in just over 3 years is priceless."
The next 4 days will see plenty of familiar faces including top ranked Hung-Sheng "Shaq" Lin, Ion Sang Song (No. 3), Charles Lam (No. 6), Hung-Chang Lin (No. 7), and Red Dragon runner-up Haifeng Xue (No. 9); Team PokerStars Pros Bryan Huang (No. 27), Celina Lin (No. 58), Raymond Wu, and Vivian Im (No. 5); as well as, PokerStars sponsored players Neil Arce (No. 54), , Daren Yoon (No. 29), and former Red Dragon winner Mark Benasa (No. 2).
