zwacke marches through field to 3/1/11 Super Tuesday title

Super Tuesday logo.pngHow's that saying go? Something about March coming in like a lion? Well, the month's first Super Tuesday certainly roared its way through the night with 422 total entrants vying against one another, each with the goal of emerging as the evening's ruler of the online poker jungle.

With a buy-in of $1,000+$50, that created a total prize pool of $422,000. The top 54 finishers would come out of this Texas hold'em forest with a profit, with the first-place finisher scheduled to earn a handsome payday of $80,981.80.

The lion's share, you might say.

As the tourney approached the three-hour mark the field had already been trimmed to just 200 players, with 00psiedaisy, twopairdad, and gibler321 atop the counts. Just three members of Team PokerStars remained alive at that point, Andre "aakkari" Akkari (of Brazil), Christian "el grillo" de León (of Mexico), and Mer "PeachyMer" Brit (of Team Online).

Those three continued to hang over the next hour-and-a-half as the field shrunk below 100 and Roxx Box, KingKaizers, and Kz_PStar ascended to occupy the top spots on the leaderboard. Soon, however, all three went out in rapid succession shy of the cash.

First it was de León going out in 80th place when his A♣J♦ failed to stand up versus BBOY3110's J♥9♥. el grillo had shoved his short stack all in before the flop and gotten called, but his opponent flopped a straight and he couldn't catch up.

A couple of minutes later it was PeachyMer who'd become short-stacked when she open-raised all in for about seven big blinds with Q♥J♥. Who was waiting for her? Once again it was BBOY3110, holding A♠K♦. Five cards later BBOY3110's hand was still best, and Brit was out in 73rd.

Just a moment after that Akkari was all in with a short stack as well, holding pocket jacks versus Ron Jovi 7's K♣Q♣. All was fine for Akkari until a king landed on the river, sending him out in 71st.

"End of online session," tweeted the Brazilian shortly afterwards. The Super Tuesday hadn't gone as planned for him, but overall it had been a good night's work. "Two final tables but no big cashes, let's try again tomorrow!"

It would take another hour for the cash bubble to burst, with trainwrecks becoming the unfortunate 55th-place finisher after running A♦4♣ into KingKaizers' pocket rockets.

By the time they reached the six-and-half-hour mark they were down to just two tables, with SFisch4, zwacke, and LosChief leading the final 18. At that point a few other familiar names were still with chips, too, including Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen (in fourth), Randal "RandALLin" Flowers (in eighth), and a$$ou (in 10th).

A little over an hour later they were down to 10 when a short-stacked TranquilMind ran A♦Q♥ into Flowers' A♥A♠, and the final table was set.

Seat 1: zwacke -- 413,311
Seat 2: Mattssons -- 134,102
Seat 3: 00psiedaisy -- 370,671
Seat 4: mement_mori -- 454,467
Seat 5: RandALLin -- 187,643
Seat 6: DNA2RNA -- 143,112
Seat 7: KingKaizers -- 80,515
Seat 8: hoodini10 -- 142,953
Seat 9: Ron Jovi 7 -- 183,226

It would only take three hands at the final table for the first elimination to occur. With the blinds 2,000/4,000, mement_mori opened with a raise to 8,000 from the cutoff and it folded to KingKaizers in the big blind who reraised all in for 89,515 total. mement_mori called, showing 5♠5♦ to KingKaisers' A♣6♠. The board ran out 8♥J♣7♣J♠K♦ and Petersen's pair held, sending KingKaisers out in ninth.

Less than an orbit later the blinds had moved to 2,400/4,800 when hoodini10 opened for 10,300, then 00psiedaisy reraised to 23,250 from the cutoff. It folded back to hoodini10 who thought a few moments, then shoved all in for 135,453 total, and 00psiedaisy made the call. Both players held pocket pairs, with 00psiedaisy's J♥J♠ having the edge over hoodini10's 8♣8♦.

That edge became much greater when the flop came K♠Q♠J♦, giving 00psiedaisy a set of jacks. The 3♥ on the turn made the river A♠ meaningless, eliminating hoodini10 in eighth.

Soon after players took their eight-hour break, at which point mement_mori was out in front with just over 570,000, followed by 00psiedaisy with a little more than 538,000. Meanwhile RandALLin and Mattssons were the short stacks, both sitting with about 125,000 chips.

Soon after they returned, a hand arose in which all folded to RandALLin in the cutoff who raised to 10,200, and got one caller in zwacke in the big blind. The flop came 9♣Q♥J♥. zwacke checked, and when RandALLin bet 18,000 zwacke quickly check-raised to 38,400. RandALLin responded by pushing all in for 115,000 and zwacke snap-called, showing K♠T♠ for a flopped straight. RandALLin had A♥3♥ and was looking for a saving heart to give him the flush.

However, the turn was the 9♦ and the river the K♣, and Randal "RandALLin" Flowers was out in seventh.

The remaining six battled for nearly another hour, right up until the last hand before the nine-hour break, when 00psiedaisy opened with a minimum-raise to 16,000 from middle position. mement_mori, sitting to 00psiedaisy's left, then reraised to 39,850, and it folded back to 00psiedaisy who pushed all in for 269,827 total. mement_mori made the call, showing A♣Q♣, but had unfortunately run smack into 00psiedaisy's A♥A♦. The five community cards came 4♥2♥2♦3♥J♣, and Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen was out in sixth.

Following that hand, zwacke retained the chip lead with more than 765,000, 00psiedaisy moved into second with a little over 527,000, Ron Jovi 7 was next with about 406,000, with DNA2RNA (218K) and Mattssons (192K) bringing up the rear.

Over the next half-hour zwacke added further to that lead. Then, with the blinds up to 5,000/10,000, Ron Jovi 7 raised to 20,080 from the button, zwacke pushed all in over the top from the small blind, and after Mattssons folded Ron Jovi 7 called for 174,041. Ron Jovi 7 showed A♦Q♠, but needed help versus zwacke's A♣K♥ to survive. The board ran out jack-high, though -- 7♠J♠2♥3♠3♣ -- and Ron Jovi 7 was gone in fifth.

That one put zwacke up close to 1.4 million, more than three times second-place 00psiedaisy's stack. Soon came another all-in confrontation, with DNA2RNA shoving all in from the small blind for 102,262 with K♥K♠ and zwacke calling with 4♠4♣ in the BB.

The flop came 6♣4♥J♣, giving zwacke the set and leaving DNA2RNA searching for one of the two remaining kings. But the turn was the 8♣ and river the Q♥. "sry ul nh," typed zwacke as DNA2RNA hit the rail in fourth.

zwacke's run good continued. Soon, with the blinds 6,000/12,000, Mattssons raised from the button to 24,500, then zwacke pushed all in from the big blind. Mattssons called for his entire 254,466 with A♣Q♥, but zwacke had him in a bad spot with A♥K♠. The board came 3♦8♦J♣T♦4♥, and Mattssons had ended his run in third place.

Heads-up began with zwacke enjoying almost a 4-to-1 chip lead over 00psiedaisy, with 1,674,828 to 00psiedaisy's 435,172. Within 15 hands zwacke had chipped away enough to claim half of his opponent's stack. And just a couple of hands after that the end quickly arrived.

Down to 198,172, 00psiedaisy open-raised all in from the small blind button and zwacke called. 00psiedaisy held 9♣7♥ and needed to hit something versus zwacke's A♣8♦. But no help arrived as the community cards came Q♥3♦3♣Q♦8♣.
