I'm thinking about growing a beard. It's kind of dad-like to have a beard, right? Since I have no idea what it takes to be a dad, maybe I'll start dressing the part to be a bit more convincing. Perhaps I'll find a lumberjack shirt to go with it, but I'm not sure if that's going to work in the Florida heat.
Florida, after all, is where I got the news that I was going to be a father. My girlfriend Alex and I were planning on moving in together in England later this year. At the end of August, I flew down to Miami to see her and play in the WPT event at the Seminole Hard Rock. During my visit we got quite a surprise when Alex found out she was pregnant. We were really, really shocked at first but it didn't take long for that shock to transform into complete joy. I've always wanted a family. I just didn't think it would happen for me so soon. I've recently turned 25, which makes me a pretty young dad, but the upside is that when my kid turns 18 I won't be a cranky old man yet!
Alex is with me in England now and she's feeling good. Both of us were so anxious to find out the sex of the baby, especially after the first ultrasound revealed that we were a 65% favorite to have a girl. I'd been leaning on the side of wanting a boy, but if you think about it in poker terms, being 35% to win is like having J-T against A-K. My cards are so live! I can easily hit a pair!
A few weeks ago, we traveled down to London for the UKIPT and EPT events and whilst there, Alex got her 16-week scan. Turns out the A-K held up and we're indeed having a girl. I'm coming around to the idea of having a daughter and of course all my friends have their own ideas about names, as well as the rather questionable "uncle skills" they have to offer. Now that we know it's going to be a pink colour scheme, we're transforming my old office into a nursery so it will be ready when our daughter arrives. We're planning to have the birth in Miami so Alex can have her mum and sister close by. I know they'll be an immense help in those first few weeks and make life a lot easier for our new family. Hopefully my mum will fly in as well for the birth and when we're ready, we'll take our daughter home to Leeds.
It seems quite far away now, but before I know it, my daughter is going to be here.
It's a little scary, but I just can't wait to meet her, see how she takes after us, and discover her personality. Things don't always happen the way we planned, but in this case, our surprise turned out to be a most incredible blessing.
