Team Online's Caio Pessagno makes history on TLB
When dawn broke on Monday, the people who manage the PokerStars Tournament Leader Board saw something interesting next to the weekly winner's name: a red spade.
PokerStars' Mike J. has been running the TLB seven years. When he saw Team Online's Caio Pessagno's name at the top, Mike thought, "Well, I haven't seen that before." Since 2006, Mike has never seen a member of Team Online or Team Pro win the weekly TLB.
"I can't say with certainty," he said, "but I think this will be the first time it's ever happened."
I've been writing on this blog since 2005, and I certainly don't remember it happening before either (and I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong).
It was a big weekend for Pessagno. He not only won the TLB for the week ending Saturday, but then he turned around and won the Sunday Second Chance the next day for $38,002.
Pessagno's big achievement didn't come without a plan.
"I'm always trying to organize my life to be able to fight for TLB rankings," he said. "You need to prepare your brain. I think this is the most dificult thing to do: isolate your mind of everything that is not relevant for the grind. And this week I'm extremely happy just for doing this."
The man from Brazil says he was watching the clock tick toward midnight on Saturday. When he got there, he said it felt like the end of a magic week that had him playing the best he ever has. He remembers being totally focused and deciding he wasn't ready for it to end. So, he dug in and went to work on Sunday.
"To get crowned with a Sunday major, it's a dream for me, and the biggest motivation ever to keep working hard," he said.
Congratulations, Caio, on a great performance this week. Can you do it again?
