Manila Megastack 7 Main Event set to start
Greetings poker fans and welcome to the Manila Megastack 7 brought to you from the PokerStars LIVE Manila card room located at the luxurious City of Dreams resort in the Philippine's capital.
The first of the ₱8 million (~US$160,786) guaranteed Main Event's two starting flights - Day 1A - begins at 6pm local time (GMT+7) on Friday 2 June. With December 2016's Manila Megastack 6 attracting a record-breaking 646 runners the bar has been set high.
It was Singapore's Siong Boon Heng who emerged victorious over the Philippine's largest-ever international tournament field for a ₱2,771,000 (~$55,850) payday. Whether the Singaporean can successfully defend his title remains to be seen, but if the trend of increasing field size continues then Manila Megastack 7 looks set to be massive.
The Main Event's inaugural run in January 2015 attracted a modest 61 runners and generated a ₱1.3 million prizepool, with the number of entrants increasing tenfold by the time reining champion Heng took the ₱2.77 million top prize - more than double the size of the inaugural event's entire prizepool!
If the numbers for the side events are anything to go by then records may tumble in Manila once more: So far Manila Megastack 7 has awarded over ₱4.3 million (~$88,095) in prize money over the opening four side events and this is just the appetizer as the main course has yet to be served.
We hope you are as hungry for the poker action as we are - in addition to the Main Event, there are 18 other Official Asia Player of Year events taking place this week, with the Series concluding on Sunday 4 June. The series launched with the ₱10,000 Kick-off (₱2 million guarantee) on May 29, which attracted 330 runners with the Philippine's Mark Hebron taking down the ₱480,000 (~$9,650) top prize.
The Hong Kong Poker Player's Association (HKPPA) are also in town and have already made their mark with Vice Chairman and former 2015 Asia Player of the Year (APOY) Alan 'King Lun' Lau taking down the ₱5,000 Bubble Rush and Chairman Park Yu 'Sparrow' Cheung taking down the ₱3,000 NLH Freezeout.
Larger buy-in events - such as the ₱50,000 NLH Freezeout and ₱100,000 Single Day High Roller - are also making a return. The two events previously combined for 133 players and ₱7.9 million in prize money. The 30-second shot clock is making its first appearance at PokerStars LIVE Manila for the SDHR.
