PokerStars Festival Bucharest: When Daniel came to Bucharest

This year, Chris Moneymaker is the big name here at the PokerStars Festival Bucharest. But it was another Team PokerStars Pro who stole the limelight at this very same stop last summer.

Who you ask?

Here's a hint. He's Canadian. He's near/at the top of the all-time money list. And his name rhymes with MANUEL MAGLANU (his name is also in the title of this piece, but we'll ignore that for now).

Drumroll please...

Negreanu in Bucharest

Yes, it was Kid Poker himself Daniel Negreanu who made an appearance here last year - much to the delight of the Romanian contingent in the room.

But, Daniel's stop here back in May 2016 wasn't just another random stop in the calendar for him. There was something that made his visit here to the Romanian capital paticularly special.

What, you ask?

A grand welcome

Well, it turns out that his stop at the Eureka 6 in Bucharest was a homecoming, of sorts. Despite being born in Canada, Daniel actually has Romanian heritage. Both his mother and father emigrated to Toronto, Canada from Romania, seven years before Daniel was born. When he grew up he was taught to speak half in English, half in Romanian and he credits much of his outlook on life to his Eastern European heritage and strict upbringing.

So what did Daniel get up to while he was here? Well, like Moneymaker his stop involved numerous selfies, press conferences as well as the Romanian premier of his documentary 'Kid Poker'. He also managed to squeeze a little sight-seeing on his trip too (via the comfort of his hotel room):

And how did he do in the tournament?

Well, sadly, not that great. Much like Moneymaker's short spell in today's event, Negreanu's demise came at on Day 1B after hitting a spot of bad-luck two hands in a row. You can read about that here.

And while Daniel went on to praise the addition of the Day 1C to the Poker but not end up playing it, Moneymaker has just hopped into this year's Day 1C after busting earlier on in the day. Stay tuned to find out how he gets on tonight via our friends at PokerNews (link below).
