PokerStars Festival London: Long and short of it on Day 1C at the Hippodrome

Full house expected at the Hippodrome

The long and short of Friday at the Hippodrome Casino, London, is that we're in for a long and a short day.

From 11am this morning, Day 1C of the £990 Main Event of the PokerStars London festival plays through its scheduled 12 levels. And then after that, Day 1D begins, which is a turbo version of the previous flights open only to those players whose tournament went south during any of Days 1A, 1B or 1C.

The buy-in is the same (£990) and the stack-size is the same (30,000 tournament chips). But levels are only 20 minutes long in the version that starts at 10pm tonight, as opposed to the more regular 45 minutes. It's going to be a Friday night frenzy.

Over two previous opening flights, 333 players have already bought in. There were 47 survivors on Day 1A and 51 survivors from Day 1B. The high probability is that today's 1C will be bigger than both, ensuring the £400,000 guarantee will be surpassed very easily.

Play is going to be spread all the way across the Hippodrome Casino. The dealers have just received their instructions from Emma Vivaldi of the tournament staff, who scattered them far and wide.

"There are 12 tables in here [the main card-room on the stage], four in the bar, five in the lounge, three in Jimmy's Room, two in Alma's room and six on the deck," she said.

There are seats for 270 players, and alternates will also be permitted into the action as and when there is space. That could bring the 1C field up to about 360 players, which is more than Days 1A and 1B combined.

One player is going to attract more attention than most. Stephen Hendry, the seven-times World Snooker champion is playing today, fresh from victory in a media invitational last night. We had a chin-wag with Hendry yesterday and will have an article up later about him.
