ANZPT Canberra: Plenty to like about Mike on day 2

It's shaping as one of the most exciting final tables in the tour's short history after a gripping day two in the ANZPT Canberra Main Event. After nine one-hour levels, the field of 90 had been slashed to just 15 - the bulk of those eliminated in the first three hours of the day.

PokerStars Qualifier Michael Chon entered Casino Canberra among the shorter stacks but methodically amassed a staggering 827,000 to finish with almost double John Maklouf (448,000), who is aiming for successive ANZPT final tables after placing sixth in Sydney.

The man to catch: Michael Chon

One of Australia's most respected poker players, 2008 APPT Grand Final runner-up Jason Gray, lies third with 386,500 while housemates Aaron Benton and Rennie Carnevale finished with identical stacks: 276,000. That duo are aiming to become the first player to win two regional PokerStars tour titles - Benton was the 2009 APPT Sydney winner while Carnevale took out the ANZPT Adelaide title earlier this year.

Others still in contention include the man who placed runner-up to Carnevale, Andrew Scarf (222,000), PokerStars Player Hugh Cohen (217,000), Sydney poker icon Antonis "Toothpick Tony" Kambouroglou (183,500) and the last female player in the field, Selina Bodel (114,500).

Rennie Carnevale is aiming to become the first multiple ANZPT event winner

Players eliminated during the day included the last Team Australia Pro in the field Emad Tahtouh, Billy "The Croc" Argyros, Chris Levick, Joel Dodds, Dale Marsland, Peter Aristidou, Scott Kerr, day one chip leader Sam Rotar and Amanda Simpson, who was eliminated on the bubble after losing the bulk of her chips to Carnevale with pocket kings against his A-K, which improved to a flush.

It's been a long but exciting day here in Canberra, and while the bulk of the country will be reflecting on Australia's opening World Cup game against Germany on the Queen's Birthday holiday Monday (weird, as her birthday is on April 21), we'll be back for all the action in the chase for spots at the 2010 ANZPT Canberra Main Event final table.
