Australia's best ready to shine at ANZPT Sydney
Over the years, Sydney has been home to some of the Australia's great sporting events, so it's no surprise that the harbour city also has a special place in the history of Australian poker.
Way back in 2007, a Sydney school teacher became the first Australian to win one million dollars on home soil at the PokerStars.net APPT Sydney Grand Final. That man was none other than Grant Levy, and now nearly four years down the track, we find ourselves in a rather surreal situation with Levy entering the Star City Poker Room as the man to watch once again.
It's something Levy would be used to, as he's felt the burden of expectation many times in this poker room as one of Star City's ambassadors. However coming off a memorable victory in Perth, Levy will be full of confidence when the third event of Season 3 of the ANZPT kicks off in Sydney tomorrow.
Typically this event is the largest of the season, with 493 in the inaugural season and another 446 last year when Angelo Hanataj emerged triumphant to collect a massive $219,432 first place prize. While we're unlikely to reach those heights this time around, we can still expect the Star City Poker Room to be buzzing over the next week.
Sydney is always a popular spot on the tour, not only because of the great action on the felt, but the plethora of options for players away from the tables. PokerStars qualifiers will be enjoying a range activities this week, including a stunning harbour cruise, as the ANZPT continues to provide players with an experience that is more than just a poker tournament.
While Melbourne and Sydney will always enjoy a spirited rivalry we must admit that while Melbourne copped record rainfalls overnight, Sydney was basking in sunshine today as those arriving were able to take advantage for some sightseeing, shopping and a little alfresco dining.
With the strong Aussie dollar we might also see a few international players venture to Sydney for the big event, with Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang a confirmed starter, to join Australia's Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem and Tony Hachem.
For the next week, we'll be setup in the Star City Casino which is currently undergoing a massive AU$575 million redevelopment of its facilities. A second hotel, additional restaurants and bars, and an expansion of gaming facilities, which will possibly include a brand new poker room, await us before the end of the year.
The $2,200 PokerStars.net ANZPT Sydney Main Event kicks off tomorrow at 12:30pm local time (GMT+10) as the first of two opening flights kicks off. We look forward to your company throughout the week for live updates exclusively on PokerStars Blog as Season 3 of the ANZPT heats up in Sydney!
