Leapin' Leo does it again in Canberra

A chilly Saturday afternoon saw a field of 73 players take to the felt of the Casino Canberra for Day 1b action in the PokerStars.net ANZPT Canberra Main Event. This produced a total number of 134 entrants to create a healthy $268,000 prize pool.

Amongst them today was our only Team PokerStars Pro in the field, and the reigning ANZ Player of the Year, Tony Hachem.

It was a rough day on the felt for "Back-to-back Hash" as he rarely got himself above starting stack on a tough starting table that included Tim Napper, APPT Sydney final tablists Ben McLean and Tom Rafferty and 2010 ANZPT Adelaide champ Rennie Carnevale.

Rafferty was the early mover as he caught a fortunate river to make a straight and cripple Carnevale, however fortunes would change as the day progressed. Carnevale found a double up and survived the day, while Rafferty's run came to an end in a blind on blind battle with Hachem.

The other interesting table saw the likes of Billy Jordanou, Andrew Scarf and ANZPT Sydney champion Michael Kanaan battle with all three having solid days on the felt.

The eliminations were slow to come, as Dennis Huntly, Danny Chevalier and ANZPT Gold Coast champion Peter Matusik were amongst the casualties, but after seven levels of play, just 41 survived the carnage.

Michael Guzzardi, Jarred Graham, Luke Edwards, Oliver Grujic, Andrew Watson and Aussie Millions champion David Gorr will be back tomorrow, but the man at the top of the tree today was none other than Leo Boxell.

What more can we say about Boxell that hasn't already been said before? Well, since having the day one chip lead and eventually finishing fourth at the ANZPT Gold Coast, Boxell headed over the Tasman and picked up another fourth place in the recent New Zealand Poker Open. Back in Australia and Boxell has again topped an ANZPT field.

Boxell accumulated throughout the day but picked up the majority of his chips late after making a straight with queen-jack to better an opponent's two pair. His soft toy companion "Wally the Wombat" will be sleeping well tonight, safely tucked up in a bag of chips worth 79,925.
